Mummy Evolution-Chapter 19: Burrhen
Chapter 19: Burrhen
Burrhen was a grand city, larger and more imposing than most. A giant wall of ceramic black surrounded the city, protecting it from desert storms and sandy winds.
Sett sat atop his camel, the animal shifting restlessly beneath him, its long lashes blinking against the swirling dust. Sitting in front of him, Zarah adjusted the hood of her travel-worn cloak, her gaze fixed on the towering gateway ahead.
Watching his surroundings, Sett couldn't help but be rather dumbfounded.
"The world truly has changed a lot in the past few hundred years," he said with a rather emotional sigh. "I can't even understand what half of the things I am seeing are."
And there was much to see.
A throng of people jostled toward the city's entrance—merchants pulling carts brimming with wares, traders leading camel caravans burdened with spice-laden sacks, and guards in rigid armor, their hands resting on heavy swords of old.
Those were all familiar sights.
He watched it all with interest, Zarah buzzing about something beside him.
Slaves moved through the crowd in quiet submission, their faces caked with sweat. Most of them were carrying heavy glass and pottery into the city for merchants, their necks bound with dog collars of iron and bronze.
Some other slaves, looking muscular, carried an ornate palanquin draped in embroidered silks on another side.
A shadowed figure reclined within, hidden behind colored curtains swaying in the dry breeze. Sett could make out how fat the person inside was just with the shadow.
Sett could understand all of that, too. It was a world both familiar and alien.
Some things, Sett understood well—trade, power, the ever-present divide between the free and the bound. But so much had shifted in ways he hadn't expected.
The clothing style, for one, was way more revealing now. Even women were wearing clothes that showed their arms and even much of their legs.
If that happened in olden times, they would be called sluts.
Other than that, he also saw how almost no merchant or tradesman carried swords or wore armors nowadays. Everyone was in comfortable clothes, not in battle ready ones. Perhaps, Ghost Storms weren't that common nowadays in the open desert.
"Do Ghost Storms don't happen anymore, Zarah?" he asked curiously.
"Ghost storms?" The girl asked in return, curious. "What is that?"
Sett sighed. "It's probably a thing of the past. Don't mind it."
The girl nodded.
Sett stared at the gateway in the distance. "What would happen if I stormed into the city without a permit?" he asked softly to the little girl. "Would they still make a fuss about it even though I am a Tomb Raider?"
"Of course, don't even think about it!" Zarah replied even more softly. "The Shining will come to execute you."
"The Shining?"
"They are a bunch of scary men and women, the people working under the Lord of this city, Lord Burrhen. In fact, this area of the Gateway is ruled by one of those people. Shining Black. That person and Lord Burrhen is very dangerous, so let's not make him our enemy."
"How so?" Sett was curious.
"I don't know. But I've seen Shining Black stop a ship from crashing into the bay from the city's river. He stopped it with his bare hands!"
Sett's expression hardened. "And that guy is this Lord Burrhen's subordinate?"
"Indeed," Zarah said and leaned against him. "Forget that, big brother. Tell me something else. What do you think about my sis?"
Sett smiled. "She is beautiful, caring for people she likes, and is also a hard worker."
"Oh?" Zarah smirked, perfect pearly fangs glinting. "Do you like her?"
Sett smiled. "Guess," he said.
The girl's face became much more serious. She really did want her sister to experience things like love. And this handsome big brother was like a prince. Be it in his action, charm, how caring and capable he was—he was an ideal man in every way.
But sadly, he was a mummy.
She didn't think about it and looked at Sett with her green eyes sparkling with more tears. "Don't hurt her, okay?" She asked.
Sett nodded. "Of course." He could guess at the naive girl's worries, but Sett didn't mind it.
Whatever said and done, he was the owner of the Axiom of Reincarnation. Though he despised that Axiom due to how weak it was in combat, he had to accept that it was a divine tool when it came to helping people regain life.
In fact, Sett was certain that if he used some of the abilities of that Axiom, he could regain his complete functions as a living being.
Zarah became much more carefree, letting the big brother drape his arm around her in a simple, affectionate way.
Feeling satisfied with himself, Sett then focused on something else.
Since he had some leisure now, it was time to check the things he had ignored.
The Tomb that was within his body!
Just as he was thinking that, a group of slaves walked past beside him. Zarah and he turned to them at once and were both surprised at what the slaves were carrying. It was a giant mirror.
Sett looked at his own reflection for the first time in this life.
He looked exactly like he did in his past life, just much younger. So, he truly hadn't been reborn in someone else's body!
He had been reincarnated as his own corpse! A mummy!
No wonder his height didn't seem to have changed.
Zarah's eyes also lit up.
"I don't look so wiry anymore!" she exclaimed.

"Of course, you ate good things after all."
"Hehe, true."
Sett shook his head and focused on the more important things. This time, he wasn't distracted.
With a thought, a transparent screen appeared before him, invisible to all but himself.
Progressing in the Limitless Pathway seemed to have changed the system a lot. Luckily, everything in the system was still written in a language he could understand.
