Murim's Weakest Princess-Chapter 222: Chicken Soup
Yan Ping loved a resourceful student. However, she could not see Anji off because she had actually gotten a cold since her cultivation base weakened. It was lame.
Unlike the other Elders who assisted in the spiritual surgery, Yan Ping was the one supplying most of the energy required for the surgery to progress smoothly. Even after a month of recuperation from the final surgery, she still did not recover past the Solid Core stage. All the other elders were at least in the Enlightened Core stage within a week of the surgery’s end. They went back to their usual business with occasional visits from Anji while Yan Ping was stuck in the recovery chamber for the majority of the time.
That one time she left the chamber to pass Anji a specially written manual for her energy stabilisation training, she had gotten sick. It was vexing.
Even bedridden, the blind half-sage insisted that Anji check in with her daily to report the progress on her sound sensitivity training.
Thanks to the various sect elders giving Anji tips and new tools, her student made huge progress during the month after the surgery. There were no signs of backlash, proving the surgery had gone well. Moreover, Anji’s sealed golden core was starting to activate and breathe without Zhao Mingfeng’s double dead knot seals suffocating it. With more time, Anji’s starved golden core will start recovering and growing to nourish her weak body. The final third seal modification went well, and Yan Ping really could not have done it without the combined help of everyone else.
"Shifu, Aunt Wine made some chicken soup for your cold. Would you like to try some?"
It had been many years since Yan Ping had fallen sick. It had also been many years since she had to be cared for in bed. Yan Ping barely ate before this. She did not need to. However, the weakened cultivation base and the illness made her bones ache. Nothing sounded better than a hot chicken soup fed to her by someone else. Yet, Yan Ping’s pride did not allow her to be fed by anyone else.
Struggling to sit up in bed, Yan Ping asked Anji to hand her the bowl, but Anji’s stubbornness rivalled hers.
Spoonful after spoonful, Anji chatted as she fed the old lady the warm chicken soup. She told Yan Ping stories about how she finally learned the trick to accurately identify and replicate all seven sounds needed for her Seven Sound Mantra. In fact, Anji started grasping the hang of harmonics, which was only a requirement for later stages.
"I realise that I can see sounds," Anji confided. "Shifu, is that the power of the Heavenly Eyes? I can see colours of energy and sound easier than listening to them."
That was new information. Due to the rarity of Heavenly Eyes, even Yan Ping had no idea. Not to mention, she was born blind. If Anji were able to literally see energy colours by training her Heavenly Eyes, perhaps there might be a better training method suited for her.
"How many colours can you see? Do you know which colour matches which sound? What about colours that do not have matching sounds or muddied energy?"
Grinning, Anji knew that catching her teacher’s interest was the most effective way to make her forget about her pride. Feeding Yan Ping with more enthusiasm, Anji answered all the questions. Elder Shen had gone through the entire forbidden archives to pull out all the information he could about Anji’s coloured vision. There was no exact match, but he had theories that Anji shared with Yan Ping.
Long after the chicken soup was finished, Yan Ping stayed up to discuss with Anji the different training methods she could try to develop both the Seven Sound Mantra and her Heavenly eyes while increasing her energy control.
"The priority is not to raise your cultivation level," Yan Ping reminded between coughs. "If the plant outgrows the pot too quickly, the pot will crack. Focus on quality more than quantity. Do not be in a hurry to improve. Even if you become an Enlightened Core, I will still not teach you the successor arts or allow you to enter the successor trial."
Acknowledging the firm warning, Anji promised not to cut corners to chase results. However, she was also firm about having her teacher lie down again to continue resting.
"Shifu, you should focus on recovering. There is no need to exhaust yourself to accompany me to the isolation chamber. Senior Researcher Mo will be accompanying me. Please take care of your health while I’m gone and write to my family on my behalf regularly. Gu Ying told me that she has to leave after my isolation training because the Celestial Dragon Sect is shorthanded."
Indeed, the situation outside the Mystical Qilin Sect had gotten much more complex. Anji was not given details, but from how busy the researchers were and the sect’s new mandate to put aside personal research, she could infer that the war outside had accelerated.
"Your father will write to me even before I write to him," Yan Ping scoffed, but yawned. "Don’t you worry, and take all the time you need. Nobody is rushing you. But know that if you fail to master the Seven Sound Mantra before you exit isolated training, you will be banned from learning the successor clarivoyance art until the war ends."
The threat remained effectively etched in Anji’s mind. Yan Ping meant it. Although it was not detrimental to delay training, Anji was in a hurry to quickly leave the Mystical Qilin Sect and participate in the murim war alongside her family. She made a promise to finish her successor training by the time she was ten years old. There was no way a daughter of the great war hero would be cooped up in safety while everyone else fought.
As the daughter of Zhao Mingfeng and the successor of the Mystical Qilin Sect, Anji refused to be the only one not participating. This was her fight too.
