Chapter 97: Chapter 97: Stella, Don’t Be Afraid, I’m Fine

"Ethan!"

Kiana’s eyes widened in disbelief. She wanted to reach out and stop him, but her feet seemed rooted to the spot, and she could only watch helplessly as he lunged to shield Stella, the two of them tumbling down the stairs together.

The stairs to the sunken wine cellar were steep, and it was pitch-black at the bottom.

This was followed by the sharp crack of shattering glass and the crash of a wine rack collapsing from the impact.

The unusual commotion soon drew the people from the living room.

Yolanda Thorne hurried over, her right eyelid twitching for no reason as her pace quickened involuntarily.

"What happened?"

She saw Kiana slumped at the top of the cellar stairs, crying silently. After a moment of shock, Faye Rhodes quickly flipped on the cellar light and peered down.

Yolanda remembered her son had come looking for someone a short while ago. Her expression stiffened, and she quickly pushed Kiana aside to look down the stairs.

There, she saw Ethan Rhodes lying on the floor, shielding Stella. A wine cabinet in the center of the room had been struck, one side collapsing as it tilted over.

The collection of wines on display had shattered all over the floor. Ethan Rhodes’s white shirt was stained red with wine, and there were shards of glass on him. Blood was also seeping from his temple.

Yolanda snapped back to her senses and screamed, her hand flying to her mouth. "Ah! Ethan! Quick! Someone call a doctor!"

Yolanda nearly collapsed and frantically tried to rush down to check on him.

She had just taken a step when someone stopped her.

Leila Rhodes grabbed her arm. "Auntie, don’t panic. I’ll go down and check first. Please calm down, you could get hurt if you go down there."

With red-rimmed eyes, Yolanda turned to her. "Yes, yes, you’re right. Leila is a doctor. You go check on him. It hasn’t been long since Ethan was discharged from the hospital. He can’t get hurt again..."

Leila Rhodes gave her hand a gentle squeeze, then turned to tell Melody Rhodes to get the first-aid kit before heading downstairs.

Although Ethan had shielded her, the violent impact still left Stella dizzy for a moment.

"Stella! Stella! Can you hear me?"

Leila had to call her name a few times before she finally snapped out of her daze.

Stella slowly propped herself up. The potent stench of alcohol assaulted her, and her vision blurred again.

She caught a glimpse of something out of the corner of her eye. When she turned to look, she saw Ethan lying behind her, blood streaming from his forehead.

In an instant, a memory she thought had long since faded came rushing back from the depths of her mind, suddenly crystal clear.

An out-of-control truck plowed across the median, its horn blaring as it hurtled straight toward them.

Shards of the shattering windshield seemed to fly toward her eyes in slow motion. Just then, someone shouted her name and threw himself over her, pulling her into his arms.

When she came to, her entire world was a sea of red. All of it... was Ethan’s blood.

So much blood...

No matter how she screamed his name, it was as if Ethan couldn’t hear her.

After some time—she didn’t know how long—Ethan briefly regained consciousness. Seeing that she was unharmed, he even smiled to comfort her. "Stella, don’t be afraid. I’m okay..."

And with that, he lost consciousness completely.

An uncontrollable sting pricked at the back of her eyes.

With trembling hands, she gently shook the man’s shoulders. "Ethan Rhodes... Ethan, wake up... Don’t scare me..."

Seeing that Stella was conscious, Leila gripped her shoulders, trying to calm her down.

"Stella, are you okay? Can you stand up? I’m a doctor. Let me check on Ethan first. Don’t worry, alright?"

The gentle voice was an anchor in the chaos.

Stella turned to look at her at the sound of her voice. Under Leila’s soft gaze, she allowed herself to be helped up and moved back a little.

Only then did Leila have a moment to check on Ethan’s condition.

Melody Rhodes, who had gone for the first-aid kit, came jogging back. She descended the stairs and placed the kit next to Leila.

There were shards of glass all behind Ethan, so Leila had to support his shoulders, lean him toward her, and then help him lie prone on a clear patch of floor.

She glanced around and said, "Melody, have one of the maids come clean up the glass over there."

Then she patted Ethan’s shoulder. "Ethan? Ethan? Can you hear me? Wake up!"

When Ethan didn’t respond, she proceeded to check the injuries on his head and back.

They appeared to be only superficial wounds.

The tricky part was the wound on the back of his head.

Everyone present knew Ethan had suffered amnesia after his car accident. Now that he’d injured his head again, there was no telling how severe it was.

Leila made a swift decision: she had to at least stop the bleeding from the wound on his forehead.

As she turned to get gauze from the first-aid kit, she suddenly heard a loud SLAP from behind her.

At some point, Yolanda had also made her way into the cellar. Seeing the extent of Ethan’s injuries, her hands began to tremble uncontrollably.

After a great effort to compose herself, her eyes bloodshot, she turned and, without another word, viciously slapped Stella across the face.

"It’s because of you again!" Yolanda’s voice was harsh, yet choked with sobs. "Ethan is hurt again because of you! Stella, what will it take for you to leave him alone? Just because he doesn’t love you anymore, does that mean you want him dead? Is that it?!"

Stella stood to the side, clutching one arm, unable to say a word.

’No matter why I fell down those stairs, the fact is that Ethan is hurt again because of me, lying unconscious on the ground.’ 𝙛𝓻𝒆𝓮𝒘𝙚𝙗𝒏𝙤𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝓬𝒐𝙢

Stella bit her lip as the terror from the car accident—the fear that Ethan would never wake up again—surged through her in waves.

Anyone who looked closely would have seen that Stella was trembling just as violently as Yolanda.

Yolanda was worried sick, and it seemed as though screaming at Stella was the only way to suppress the anxiety gnawing at her heart.

"First Kiana, now Ethan! He’s unconscious because of you again! You’re a jinx! Will you only be happy when everyone around you is dead?!"

She roughly wiped the tears from her face and yanked hard on Stella’s arm. "Get out! The Rhodes family can’t afford a daughter-in-law like you! Get out!"

Even though Ethan had shielded her, Stella had inevitably injured her arm in the fall.

Now, with Yolanda yanking on it so forcefully, the pain caused the color to drain from her face, but she bit her lip and remained silent.

Just then, a low cough sounded from behind them.

Leila’s tense expression faltered. She quickly asked, "Ethan, can you hear me? Do you know where you are?"

Ethan coughed a few times, coming to his senses. He frowned and nodded. "The Rhodes... family estate..."

"Do you know who I am?"

He struggled to lift his eyelids and glanced at her. "Leila... Rhodes."

"Can you clench your right fist?"

Ethan followed her instructions, slowly but successfully completing a few simple movements.

"Phew..." Leila finally let out a sigh of relief. "There shouldn’t be any major issues."

Just then, however, Ethan’s gaze fell upon Stella, who was standing not far away.

"Stella..."

Stella’s heart was in turmoil. She curled her fingers, frozen to the spot.

Yolanda, her eyes still red, gave her a discontented shove, and only then did Stella move, walking over to kneel in front of Ethan.

Ethan took her hand, which was hanging limply at her side, and managed a weak smile. "Stella, don’t be afraid. I’m okay..."

Tears instantly streamed down her face.

’He called me Stella. He remembers.’
