Chapter 12: Beautiful Life

Five years later

The soft sound of giggles drifted into Katherine’s ears before the sunlight even touched her face. She stirred slightly under the warm duvet, her brows gently furrowed in sleepy confusion. As her eyes fluttered open, she caught sight of two tiny shadows framed in the bedroom doorway.

Maya and Nathan.

Her beautiful angels. Her life. Her everything.

Katherine’s gaze softened the moment she saw them—like sunlight melting frost. Born five years ago on a rainy autumn morning, they had arrived after hours of pain and fear, and yet, the moment she held them, everything else faded. Maya, her eldest by five minutes, came out wailing—a strong voice in a small body. And Nathan, oh Nathan, had followed calmly, blinking up at the world like he already understood it.

Before she could even speak, the twins came running—Maya first, her tiny feet padding against the hardwood floor like a little stampede, followed by Nathan’s quieter, more careful steps. They clambered onto the bed with practiced ease, a chorus of laughter trailing in their wake.

"Mama! Wake up, wake up!" Maya squealed as she jumped into her mother’s arms, hugging her neck tightly and planting a sloppy kiss on her cheek.

Katherine laughed, still half-asleep. "Morning, baby."

Nathan followed, curling gently against her side, his small arms wrapping around her waist. He didn’t speak right away—he never did—but his sleepy smile said enough. Katherine reached over to stroke his soft hair.

Maya pulled back to hover over Katherine, her dark eyes sparkling. "Did you dream, Mama? Did you dream about the ice cream land again?"

Katherine smiled, brushing a lock of Maya’s wavy hair behind her ear. "Ice cream land? That sounds delicious. But no, not last night."

"Oh! I did! There were strawberry rivers and cookie boats!" Maya threw her arms out in the air, nearly smacking her brother.

Nathan blinked. Katherine turned her head to him, her voice soft. "What about you, sweetheart? Did you dream?"

He nodded slowly, his tone quiet but clear. "I think I did. But it was quiet. I don’t remember much."

Maya gasped. "Maybe it was a ninja dream! Those are always quiet!"

Katherine chuckled and kissed both their foreheads. "Alright, my little ninja and cookie sailor. Time to shower. Big day today, remember?"

Maya’s eyes widened. "Our first day of kindergarten!"

Nathan’s fingers curled into Katherine’s nightshirt briefly before he nodded, calm and serious.

The twins hopped off the bed and ran off to the bathroom. Katherine dragged herself out from beneath the covers, stretching her arms over her head and breathing in the moment. Time really had flown.

A few moments later, sounds of splashy giggles and bickering echoed from the bathroom. Katherine moved about the bedroom, fixing the bed and gathering clothes for the twins. They always showered together in the mornings—a habit she wasn’t sure would last much longer, but for now, it made things easier.

Once the kids were clean and dressed—Maya in a lilac dress with white tights and little butterfly clips in her hair, Nathan in a blue sweater and soft khakis—they padded to the dining table, chatting between themselves.

Katherine stood in the small kitchen, flipping pancakes and frying scrambled eggs.

"Mama?" Maya called, legs swinging under the chair.

"Yes, sweetie?"

"Where’s Uncle Felix? He said he’d come today, right?"

Nathan, without looking up from his drawing, replied matter-of-factly, "He’ll come soon."

Katherine looked over her shoulder, heart warming. She smiled softly. "He’ll be here any moment, love."

As if on cue, the doorbell rang.

Both twins gasped and shot up from their seats.

"I’ll get it!" Maya shouted, racing toward the door.

"Me too!" Nathan followed, a few steps behind.

Katherine heard the squeal of the door opening, followed by a loud, "Uncle Feeelix!"

"Whoa!" came Felix’s familiar voice, warm and deep. "Flying hugs already?"

Maya had launched herself into his arms and he caught her effortlessly, spinning her once in the air as she giggled.

Nathan stood next to them, smiling a little shyly as he offered a small wave.

"Hey there, champ," Felix greeted him, crouching down slightly with Maya still in one arm. "You keeping your sister out of trouble?"

Nathan nodded, his voice quiet. "Sometimes."

Felix laughed. "Good enough."

Katherine stepped out from the kitchen, wiping her hands on a towel. Her smile was bright, easy, but the flutter in her chest told her it wasn’t entirely casual.

"Speak of the devil," she said, raising an eyebrow. "Maya was just asking about you."

Felix looked up, his eyes crinkling at the corners. He set Maya down gently, who immediately dashed off to show him her backpack.

"Hope I’m not too late."

"Not at all," Katherine said, motioning him in. "Perfect timing. Breakfast’s ready."

Felix stepped in, glancing around like he always did—as if grounding himself in the space. He had his usual look of quiet contentment, wearing a denim jacket and a navy button-up beneath. His beard was a little thicker than last time, his hair slightly tousled. Familiar, yet different.

They sat together at the dining table—Felix between the twins, who both began talking at once about what kindergarten might be like. Katherine watched the scene as she poured juice into glasses: Maya’s animated hands flying as she imagined a giant slide in the school, Nathan quietly eating but occasionally glancing at Felix as if to confirm he was still there.

Felix listened intently, nodding, smiling, asking just enough to keep their chatter going.

And Katherine... she simply stood there for a moment, hand resting on the counter, heart full.

Five years ago, her world had cracked open.

The divorce was messy, public, and the loneliness that followed felt unbearable. But then, Felix appeared—not out of romance or obligation, but because he wanted to. Because he cared.

He was there for the first time Nathan had a fever. For birthdays and scraped knees. Never replacing anyone. Just... being there with them.

She sat down with them and passed out plates. Felix looked up briefly, his eyes meeting hers.

"Thank you," he said.

"For what?"

"Letting me be part of this."

She smiled, a little unsure how to respond. Her heart swelled.

"You’ve always been part of this," she said quietly.

As the twins munched on pancakes and babbled about their first day, Katherine felt a calm settle over her.

Yes, five years had passed.

Yes, life was messy and unexpected.

But now, life was also beautiful.

For now.
