Chapter 164: The Reason Why

Katherine bit her lower lip, the pressure of her teeth grounding her as she stared blankly ahead. Her fingers fidgeted in her lap, twisting the edge of her blouse. She sat quietly in the front passenger seat of Felix’s sleek black sedan, the leather interior somehow feeling too stiff against her skin this afternoon.

Felix cast a glance at her as he turned the steering wheel, navigating the quiet road leading to the kindergarten.

"You’re too distracted to drive. I’m not letting you go alone while you’re like this." That’s what Felix said earlier.

Katherine didn’t argue with him. She had simply followed him when he took the keys from her hand earlier and told her to get in the car. Now she sat beside him, her gaze flickering between the road ahead and the passing trees outside the window.

Her heart hadn’t stopped racing since she got the call from the school.

The closer they got to the kindergarten, the quieter the world seemed to become. The school gates were still open, but the parking lot was mostly empty.

They entered the hallway together. The usually lively atmosphere of the school was subdued, the faint echoes of footsteps barely audible. The end of class was near, but the building still felt unnervingly quiet.

The teacher met them in the administrative office. She was a woman in her mid-thirties, with soft brown eyes and a calm but serious expression. "Thank you for coming so quickly, Miss Anderson" she said, motioning for them to follow her inside.

Katherine nodded, her stomach tightening. "What happened?"

The teacher led them into the staff office where a few papers were still being filed and teachers prepared for the end of the school day. "There was an incident during the free play session," she began. "Nathan pulled another student’s hair and pushed him."

Katherine’s eyes widened. She glanced at Felix, who also looked taken aback. His brows lifted, lips slightly parted in disbelief.

"Nathan?" Katherine repeated, couldn’t believe her ears. "That doesn’t sound like him."

"He’s always been one of the calmest and most respectful children in the class," the teacher acknowledged gently. "Which is why we were so surprised. But he refused to say why he did it. We separated the students, of course, and no one was hurt badly. But... we hoped speaking with you might help."

Felix crossed his arms, the muscle in his jaw ticking slightly. "Where is he now?"

"We placed Nathan and Maya in one of the reading rooms to keep them comfortable until you arrived."

"Can we see them?" Katherine asked, already taking a step forward.

"Of course."

The teacher led them down another hallway, the faint buzz of the school bell preparing to ring in the background. They arrived at a small cozy room filled with bean bags, low shelves of picture books, and a small drawing table in the corner. Nathan sat on a cushion, arms crossed, his face stubbornly blank. Maya sat beside him, sniffling softly, her small fingers rubbing her eyes.

Katherine’s heart clenched at the sight.

"Maya," she whispered, rushing forward and kneeling down in front of her daughter. "Sweetheart, are you okay?"

Maya gave a shaky nod but didn’t speak. Her cheeks were flushed from crying, and a little smudge of red marked the corner of her eye.

Felix bent down beside Katherine, gently brushing a strand of hair from Maya’s face. "What happened, princess?"

Maya sniffled again, her voice barely above a whisper. "Anton’s a meanie. He said I was dumb ’cause I can’t swim. And he pulled my hair..."

Felix’s brows drew low in a scowl as he straightened slightly. "Where’s this Anton?" he murmured to Katherine, a dark glint in his eyes. "How dare he mock you?"

"Felix," Katherine hissed under her breath, giving him a pointed look.

Katherine’s gaze shifted to Nathan, who had been sitting quietly. His tiny fists clenched on his lap.

She opened her mouth to ask him something, but before a word could come out, Nathan beat her to it.

"I told him to stop," he said, eyes fixed on a spot on the floor. "I told him not to pull Maya’s hair, but he didn’t listen. He kept laughing... so I pulled his hair before I pushed him."

His voice wasn’t angry or defensive. It was flat, like he didn’t know if what he’d done was right or wrong, only that it had to be done.

He shrugged but rubbed Nathan’s head affectionately, his expression softening as he looked at the boy. "Good job protecting your sister."

That stubborn look didn’t leave his face, but his shoulders relaxed slightly under Felix’s touch.

Katherine sighed, placing her hand gently on Nathan’s arm. "Nathan, honey... I know you were trying to help Maya. And I’m proud you care about her so much. But hurting someone isn’t the right way to handle it."

Nathan finally looked up at her, eyes a little red but dry. "He made her cry." 𝙛𝒓𝒆𝙚𝒘𝒆𝓫𝙣𝓸𝙫𝓮𝒍.𝒄𝒐𝓶

"I know," she said, brushing her hand through his hair. "And you were brave to stand up for her. But next time, you need to tell a teacher, okay? We don’t use our hands to solve things."

Nathan nodded slowly, the fight draining from his little body.

The teacher, who had remained silent out of respect, finally added, "Given the context, Nathan won’t be punished. We gave him a verbal warning, and we’ve already spoken with Anton’s parents. Both students are expected to apologize to each other, and we’ll have them discuss it with a counselor during their next session."

Felix exhaled, still visibly annoyed, but he nodded. "Fair."

Maya reached out and held onto Katherine’s sleeve tightly.

Katherine stood and looked at Felix, who gently took Maya into his arms.

"I think we’ll go now," Katherine said softly. "They’ve had enough for one day."

The bell rang just then, signaling the end of classes. Laughter and hurried footsteps echoed down the halls as other students rushed to collect their bags or find their parents.

Katherine turned back to Nathan and offered her hand.

"Let’s go, sweetheart."

Nathan slipped his small hand into hers.

As they walked down the hallway together, Felix carrying Maya, and Katherine walking hand in hand with Nathan, the world felt calmer again, like the storm had passed.

At least for now.
