My Billionaire Ex Beg For A Second Chance-Chapter 241: Between What’s Said and Unsaid
The twins darted forward before Katherine could even draw in a steady breath. Their small feet pattered quickly across the floor, the sound echoing against the walls of Leonard’s apartment as if their urgency filled every corner.
"Uncle Leo!" Nathan blurted, tugging insistently at Leonard’s sleeve. His round eyes shone with worry, too large for his little face. "Are you okay? Does it hurt?"
Beside him, Maya mirrored her brother’s anxious posture, her hand resting lightly on Leonard’s arm as if she could somehow lend him strength through touch alone. Her lips pressed together in a tremble, her brows furrowed. "You don’t look okay. You’re too pale."
Their voices overlapped. It was the sound of innocence bleeding into compassion, and it pierced the heavy silence that had weighed down the room only moments before.
Leonard’s head tilted ever so slightly, and though his complexion was far from convincing, a faint smile tugged at his lips. The lines of strain around his eyes softened, as though the children’s concern melted something brittle inside him.
"I’m fine," Leonard murmured, his tone low and surprisingly gentle. His hand lifted to pat Nathan’s head. "Really. You two worry too much."
She lingered at the edge of the room, arms folded tightly across her chest, as if holding herself together. Her gaze slid briefly past Leonard to the figure standing a step behind, the one she couldn’t ignore no matter how hard she tried.
Felix.
He hadn’t spoken yet, but she could feel him. Katherine’s stomach knotted. She didn’t dare meet his eyes, not when she could already imagine the thoughts running through his head.
And then Felix’s voice broke through.
"Why don’t you two keep him company for a little while? I’m sure he’ll appreciate it."
Nathan brightened, nodding eagerly, while Maya’s grip tightened protectively on Leonard’s sleeve. Neither child sensed the tension beneath the surface, their innocent joy quick to accept Felix’s suggestion.
It was Felix’s way of easing the twins into staying behind while creating an opening for her.
And she knew, without needing to be told, that he meant for her to follow.
Her legs felt unsteady as she crossed the threshold, the quiet sound of Felix’s footsteps matching hers as he led her out into the hall.
The moment the door clicked shut behind them, the atmosphere shifted.
The apartment’s corridor felt too narrow, too suffocating. Katherine clasped her hands together in front of her, her fingers twisting anxiously, searching for anythingto anchor her. She couldn’t bear to wait for Felix’s question, couldn’t stand the pressure of his silence looming over her.
"I didn’t mean for it to happen like this," she blurted, her words tumbling out too fast, too unsteady. Her throat felt tight, her voice trembling with every syllable. "The night Leonard showed up, he could barely stand. He was outside my door, and I couldn’t just leave him there." She swallowed hard, blinking rapidly as her chest squeezed tighter. "I let him in because I thought it would be for one night. Just one. I didn’t plan for him to stay. I didn’t..."
Her words faltered.
Her head dropped, strands of hair slipping across her cheek as if to shield her from his gaze. The explanation sounded flimsy even to her own ears, though it was the truth. She hadn’t planned any of it hadn’t wanted to invite old ghosts back into her life but the moment Leonard collapsed at her threshold, all her choices had narrowed to one.
And now it looked like something else entirely.
Felix didn’t speak.
She could feel his eyes on her, unreadable, piercing. Her chest rose and fell too quickly, her lungs straining as panic threaded through her nerves.
Does he think I’m lying? Katherine’s mind spun with fear. Does he think I still feel something for Leonard? That I let him stay because I wanted him here?
The silence became unbearable. Just as Katherine’s lips parted to try again, to plead, perhaps, to explain further, Felix broke it.
With laughter.
The sound startled her so much that she snapped her head up, her eyes wide, stunned.
He was laughing in genuine amusement. A low chuckle rumbled from his chest, his shoulders shaking slightly as he shook his head.
"You look terrified," Felix said, his lips curved in a half-smile that only deepened as he studied her expression. "It’s been a long time since I’ve seen you look this nervous."
Her jaw dropped, heat flooding her face. Relief and indignation tangled inside her so tightly she could barely untangle which was stronger.
"Are you serious?" she demanded, swatting at his arm with the flat of her palm. "I thought you were angry! I thought," She cut herself off with a frustrated huff. "You shouldn’t laugh when I’m... when I’m like this."
Felix caught her hand before it could fall back to her side. His thumb brushing lightly against her knuckles. The smile lingered, though his eyes softened with something deeper.
"Well," he admitted quietly, "of course I’m angry." 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂
Her breath hitched. The warmth of relief chilled instantly, uncertainty creeping back in.
But then he added, his gaze sharpening just enough to pierce through the air between them. "Not at you."
The distinction landed like a stone in still water, rippling through her.
Katherine’s lips parted, but no words came. She stood frozen, caught between the firmness of his tone and the gentleness in his eyes.
Felix’s expression shifted, his smile fading into something steadier, calmer. "I’m angry at him but not once, not even for a second, did I think you two were... still a thing." His lips curved faintly. "Not anymore."
Katherine’s chest trembled as a rush of emotion swelled inside her. His certainty disarmed her in ways she hadn’t expected. She had braced for suspicion, for jealousy, for some painful confrontation. Instead, he offered trust.
Her hands shook faintly as she tried to find her footing again. "You’re... really sure about that?"
"I’m sure about you," Felix said simply.
He stepped closer, closing the distance between them.
Her throat tightened, emotion welling up too quickly, too fiercely. Tears stung the back of her eyes, threatening to spill.
Felix moved again, closing the final inch of space before wrapping around her shoulders. He drew her against his chest, steady and grounding.
Katherine let out a shaky breath, her body sinking into him almost involuntarily. The strength in his embrace surrounded her, both reassuring and possessive, as if to tell the world and Leonard that she wasn’t his to claim.
For now, in the circle of Felix’s arms, she allowed herself to breathe.
