My Billionaire Ex Beg For A Second Chance-Chapter 243: Secrets On The Playground
The kindergarten classroom hummed with the usual cheerful nois. Yet, tucked into one corner near the small shelves of storybooks, the twins sat quietly. They weren’t drawing like the others, nor were they laughing.
When the bell rang for recess, the classroom erupted with delighted shrieks and chatter. Children rushed to the door, eager for the open playground and the chance to run free. The twins rose more slowly, their faces subdued, their feet dragging slightly as they followed the tide of classmates out into the courtyard. The playground was alive with laughter. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂
But the twins didn’t join. Instead, they slipped to their usual spot beneath the broad old tree at the edge of the yard. They sank to the ground, knees touching, heads bowed, like they were guarding a secret too fragile to let slip.
Julio noticed immediately. He had been halfway across the yard, racing after a ball one of his classmates had kicked too far, when he caught sight of them sitting quietly instead of laughing and running. His brows furrowed. Normally, the twins were bundles of energy, always inventing little games or dragging him into imaginative adventures. To see them still, with their faces drawn, set off a flicker of unease in him.
He abandoned the ball, weaving through the children until he reached the shade of the tree. "Hey," he called softly, crouching down beside them. "Why are you guys so quiet? Did something happen?"
The twins lifted their heads almost in unison, their eyes round and uncertain. Maya nibbled on her lower lip before whispering, "We’re... we’re worried."
Julio tilted his head, trying to catch their expression. "Worried? About what?"
Nathan leaned close, voice small enough that it nearly drowned beneath the shrieks of children on the swings. "About Uncle Leonard."
Julio blinked, surprised. "Uncle Leonard? Why? What’s wrong with him?"
The twins exchanged a quick glance, the kind of silent communication siblings had mastered. Then, after a moment’s hesitation, Nathan sighed and admitted, "He was really sick. He even stayed the night at our house. He couldn’t go home because... because he was too weak."
Julio’s mouth fell open. "Uncle Leonard?" His young voice cracked in disbelief, his wide eyes reflecting equal parts shock and curiosity. "Sick?"
The twins nodded solemnly.
Julio’s brows knit together as his small hands fidgeted with the hem of his shirt. His voice came out softer this time, tinged with something heavier than curiosity. "But... why didn’t my parents tell me?"
The twins exchanged another glance, the silent kind that said neither of them really knew how to answer.
Maya leaned forward a little, her long lashes dipping as she bit her lip. "Maybe... maybe they forgot," she said carefully, though even as the words left her mouth, she didn’t sound convinced.
Nathan tilted his head, his mouth twisting into a thoughtful frown. "Or," he added with a shrug, "maybe they don’t even know. We didn’t really tell anyone. Uncle Leonard just... stayed with us until he felt better."
Julio’s lips parted as though he wanted to protest, but no words came out.
He looked back up suddenly, eyes darting between the twins. "Then... how is he now? Is he still sick?"
The question seemed to hit Maya especially hard. Her lashes fluttered, and her eyes glistened. She blinked quickly, but a thin sheen of tears still pooled at the corners. Her voice came out shaky, soft like she was trying very hard to hold it together. "He’s... better. But I didn’t like it." She swallowed and added, almost in a whisper, "I didn’t like seeing him like that."
Julio’s heart squeezed. His chest lurched with panic at the thought of Maya crying in front of him, he hated seeing tears in his friends’ eyes, especially hers. "H-hey!" he blurted, scrambling closer, his voice rising in desperation. "Don’t worry, Maya! He’s strong! Uncle Leonard is super strong. He won’t stay sick for long."
Maya blinked at him, a tear slipping down her cheek despite her effort not to cry. She sniffled, trying to smile, though it trembled.
Nathan raised a brow. "How do you know that?" he asked
"You’re not a doctor. You can’t just say that."
Julio puffed up his chest, his small fists clenching at his sides as though trying to summon all the authority a six-year-old could muster. "Of course I know! Because I’m his favorite nephew," he declared firmly, his voice rising with pride. "I know everything about him."
Nathan snorted, folding his arms. "Everything?"
"Yes!" Julio insisted, his eyes shining with determination now, almost daring them to contradict him again. "I know what food he likes, I know he doesn’t smile a lot but he does when no one’s looking, and I know when he’s tired he hides it but I can still tell." His little hands waved for emphasis as if the force of his words could make them more true. "So if I say he’s strong, then he’s strong!"
Maya stared at him for a long moment, her watery eyes wide. Slowly, the smallest, wobbliest smile tugged at her lips. "You... really think so?" she asked softly, her voice trembling but lighter than before.
Julio nodded so hard his hair flopped into his eyes. "I know so. He’s Uncle Leonard. He’s the strongest person ever. You’ll see. He’ll be just fine."
For the first time since the subject came up, Maya let out a tiny giggle, the sound breaking through the heaviness in the air. She wiped quickly at her cheeks, as if embarrassed to have cried at all, and whispered, "Okay. If you say so."
Nathan rolled his eyes but couldn’t quite hide the smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth. "Favorite nephew, huh? You sound more like his bodyguard."
Julio lifted his chin proudly, though his ears burned pink. "Maybe I am," he muttered, but inside, relief washed over him. If his words could keep Maya from crying, then he’d say them a thousand times over.
And though he was just a boy, Julio clung tightly to his own declaration.
Uncle Leonard would be fine... he had to be.
