My Billionaire Ex Beg For A Second Chance-Chapter 251: The Truth Between Us
Katherine’s steps were soft, but the tension in her chest was almost unbearable as she walked into the room. The sound of her heels hitting the floor felt like a thunderclap in the silence of Leonard’s apartment, each step heavier than the last. She had heard it all, the confession, the weight of Leonard’s words, the delicate balance he was trying to maintain with Nathan and Maya. She hadn’t expected to come home from work to this. Not today.
The door clicked shut behind her as she entered the room, and her eyes instinctively found Leonard, sitting by the bed. The children were curled together, asleep for now, their feverish bodies still and peaceful in the midst of the storm of emotions that had been brewing for days.
Leonard was watching them too, his gaze soft but distant, as though he was lost in thought. His posture was slightly hunched, the weight of everything he hadn’t said pressing down on him. Katherine’s heart ached seeing him like this. She knew that he was trying, but he was holding back. And deep down, she understood why. But she also knew that it was time. Time for everything to come out, no more holding back.
Her heart pounded as she crossed the room and sat down next to him, the space between them both fragile and full of things left unsaid. Their eyes met, and in that brief moment, there was a silent understanding. They didn’t need to speak; everything was already there, hanging between them. The tension was thick, and Katherine felt the weight of it settle on her chest like an iron weight.
She took a deep breath, steadying herself. "I know you’ve been doing your best, Leonard," she began, her voice soft but firm, a quiet resolve settling in her tone. "But it’s time. It’s time for them to know the whole truth."
Leonard’s gaze dropped to the floor, his hands fidgeting with the fabric of his jeans. His jaw clenched as if he were trying to hold back something. He opened his mouth to speak, but the words seemed stuck, trapped in his throat. "I know," he finally said, his voice low, almost too quiet. "But I’m not sure if they’re ready for all of it, Katherine."
Katherine’s heart skipped a beat. She could hear the hesitation in his voice, the uncertainty that still lingered. She placed her hand on his, her touch gentle but firm, a silent reassurance. "They deserve the truth," she said, her voice steady now, filled with quiet strength. "They’ve been through so much already. And they deserve to understand why things have been the way they’ve been."
She looked at him then, her gaze soft but unwavering. "Yes, Leonard," she continued, her voice tinged with a quiet firmness. "He’s your father."
The words hung in the air, a quiet confession between them. Leonard looked up at her, his expression unreadable, his eyes clouded with conflicting emotions. He glanced at the children, his gaze softening as he took in the sight of them, Maya, curled up with Nathan, her hand resting gently on his. She looked so small, so innocent, so trusting. Nathan’s feverish cheek pressed against Maya’s, his small breaths coming in shallow gasps as he slept.
Leonard’s chest tightened. He didn’t want to hurt them, didn’t want to shatter their fragile understanding of the world. But they deserved to know, didn’t they? They deserved the truth.
"I’m sorry I didn’t get to be the father you deserve. I wasn’t there when you needed me. But that doesn’t change how I feel."
Leonard’s voice broke a little as he looked at Nathan, his heart swelling with a love he could barely put into words. "You both are so important to me. And I will always be here," he added, his voice thickening with emotion.
Tears pricked at the corners of Leonard’s eyes, and he blinked rapidly, trying to push them back, but they wouldn’t go away. He swallowed hard, his emotions threatening to break through. "I’m sorry I couldn’t be everything you wanted me to be," he whispered, barely audible. "But I promise you, I will always try my best."
Katherine’s heart ached as she watched Leonard struggle with his emotions. Her hand moved to cover his, squeezing gently as she looked at him, her eyes filled with understanding and sympathy.
"Does that mean... I can call you ’Daddy’ now?" Maya asked, her voice small but hopeful. Her face was full of that quiet trust, the kind that only children could give so freely.
Leonard’s heart skipped a beat. He looked at her, his chest tightening with a mixture of emotions, love, guilt, hope, and something else he couldn’t name. He took a slow, steadying breath before answering.
"Yes," he said softly, his voice breaking slightly. "You can call me Daddy, if that’s what you want."
Maya’s face lit up with a smile, one so pure and innocent that it made Leonard’s heart swell with an emotion he could barely contain. She threw her arms around him, squeezing him tightly, as if trying to pull him into a place where everything was safe, where there were no more secrets, no more confusion. "Daddy!" she said again, her voice filled with warmth and happiness.
Leonard wrapped his arms around her, his heart aching as he held her close. He didn’t know if he was the father they needed, but in this moment, he felt something close to it. He didn’t know if he had the right to call himself their father, but he couldn’t deny the love that filled him.
As he hugged Maya, he felt Nathan shift beside him. The boy’s voice came out small, but steady, cutting through the quiet room. "So, you are our dad, right?" Nathan asked, his eyes still heavy with sleep but filled with the same curiosity that had prompted the question earlier.
Leonard smiled softly, still holding Maya close, but his eyes met Nathan’s. "I’m your dad," Leonard said quietly, his voice thick with emotion. "And I’ll always be here for you, Nathan. I promise."
But before the moment could settle, before Leonard could find the comfort he longed for, the sound of footsteps echoed in the hallway. Katherine froze, her heart skipping a beat. She knew the sound. It was familiar. It was a sound she’d never hoped to hear in this moment.
