Chapter 66: Chapter 66: Powerful Equipment

With a wave of his hand, Fang Zhen hurled the lit Molotov Cocktail into the mine tunnel.

BOOM!

Fierce flames erupted, and a wall of fire sealed off the tunnel.

’That should buy enough time,’ Fang Zhen thought. ’Quade should be able to get out.’

He’d done all this to cut off their pursuers and ensure a more relaxed escape, but also to protect his Attendant, Quade.

If Fang Zhen went all out, he was confident the Elite Dogmen couldn’t catch him.

Quade, however, was another story. He most likely couldn’t outrun the Kobolds.

Quade was a very loyal Attendant, and by Redstone Town’s standards, a high-quality one. Fang Zhen didn’t want to see such a dependable subordinate die. To that end, he was willing to part with two Molotov Cocktails.

Besides, the Molotovs were a craftable and renewable resource.

As for the loot on the dead Kobolds, Fang Zhen didn’t bother with it.

The time limit to clear the dungeon was twelve days. Given that timeframe, the Kobolds weren’t likely to pack up and leave before he came back.

The only difference was whether he collected the loot now or grabbed a massive haul all at once later.

Fang Zhen picked up the Dragon Gall Crossbow and Shield from the ground, then calmly turned and departed.

「Two minutes later.」

「At the mine entrance.」

Fang Zhen ducked his head and scrambled out of the mine entrance.

The weather outside the mine was decent. It wasn’t raining, and a light breeze was blowing.

Fang Zhen felt the cool wind on his face. He felt instantly refreshed, his mind much clearer.

Quade had also made it out of the mine and was bent over at the entrance, panting.

Fang Zhen glanced back into the mine; the Kobolds showed no signs of giving chase. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Still, Fang Zhen didn’t let his guard down. He clapped Quade on the shoulder.

"Keep pushing. It’s not time to relax yet," Fang Zhen said. "We’ll regroup in the woods up ahead."

"Yes, sir." Though exhausted, Quade obeyed the command.

Fang Zhen picked up the bag for his Dragon Gall Crossbow, which he’d left at the entrance. He put the crossbow away, grabbed his Anti-Riot Shield, and jogged over to his Jue Ying motorcycle.

Fang Zhen hung the Shield and the bag on the welded metal rack at the back of the bike. He got on, started the ignition with the remote key, and the engine roared to life. With a light twist of the throttle, the Jue Ying sped off toward Redstone Town.

「Seven or eight minutes later.」

In a patch of woods near Redstone Town, Fang Zhen waited for Quade, who came jogging up the path.

The honest, upright man was already panting with exhaustion.

Fang Zhen smiled at the sight.

He was sitting sideways on his Jue Ying. "Tired?" he asked Quade.

"Yeah." Quade’s face was flushed as he gasped for breath.

From his backpack, Fang Zhen pulled out a small bottle of Coca-Cola and a Snickers bar, tossing them to Quade.

"The Kobolds shouldn’t be able to track us here. Have something to eat," Fang Zhen said.

Even though Quade was his subordinate, they had been through a battle together, and Fang Zhen felt a certain camaraderie with the loyal, honest man.

"You’re right. The Kobolds have never come near Redstone Town," Quade said. "I once heard a Mercenary say they’re extremely territorial. They fear the darkness yet also worship it, so they rarely leave the mine."

Quade took the Coke and Snickers bar but hesitated, unsure how to open them.

"I’ll show you."

Fang Zhen took out a Coke for himself and gestured for Quade to copy him.

Fang Zhen took a long drink of his Coke, feeling an instant wave of satisfaction.

He knew this trip would be draining, so he’d packed sugary drinks.

Electrolyte drinks or a Red Bull would have been better for this situation, but Fang Zhen knew he’d be tense from the fight. Drinking Coke was a familiar comfort.

Quade tried to copy Fang Zhen and twist open the bottle, but his hands were a bit shaky. He didn’t have a firm grip. The cap came loose, and the carbonated gas inside erupted, sending bubbles and liquid everywhere. Quade yelped in surprise, his hand now covered in the sticky fluid. He didn’t know whether to drink it or try to clean it off.

Seeing the Coke fizzing uncontrollably from the bottle in Quade’s hand, Fang Zhen couldn’t help but roar with laughter. He knew that scene all too well.

Quade, seeing Fang Zhen’s laughter, was infected by it and broke into a simple, good-natured smile.

"HA HA HA!" After a hearty laugh, all his tension vanished.

He let out a long sigh of relief.

’This run in the Dogman Mine wasn’t a failure. I achieved my initial objective. I killed way more than three-quarters of the Kobolds.’

’Still, there are a lot of Elite Dogmen in Miner Ding, and it’s a dual-boss fight on top of that—a Heavy-Armored Warhammer Dogman and a Magic Dogman Priest. This is going to be tough.’

Fang Zhen considered it. It would be difficult, but not impossible.

As he relaxed, a plan to clear the dungeon began to take shape in his mind.

After a few moments of thought, inspiration struck.

’I’m just missing some key pieces of gear.’

’I spent a good amount of time in the mine today. I’m out of Molotov Cocktails, and I fired over twenty bolts from my Dragon Gall Crossbow.’

’I need to go back and resupply.’

’And there’s the asbestos suit I ordered yesterday. It shipped from somewhere near Xiahai, so it might even arrive today.’

’With an asbestos suit, I’ll be much more confident when facing the Dogman Priest.’

Fang Zhen’s plan was coming into focus.

’First things first, I need to resupply.’

"COUGH! COUGH! COUGH!" A fit of coughing broke Fang Zhen’s train of thought.

Quade had taken a sip of the Coke. Probably having never tasted a carbonated beverage before, he’d choked on it and started coughing.

"Slow down," Fang Zhen said.

After coughing for a moment, Quade recovered. He looked at the Coke bottle in his hand, his eyes wide with surprise.

"This stuff... it tastes strange, almost like medicine. But it’s actually pretty good," Quade said.

With that, he tipped back the bottle and finished off the remaining half in one go.

Fang Zhen laughed at the sight.

’Coke might be cheap, but it really hits the spot. It’s high in sugar and has caffeine. The Oracle of Omaha and the world’s former richest man drank it for decades; there must be something to it.’

"Heh. Keep up the good work, and I’ll bring you a couple more bottles next time," Fang Zhen chuckled.

After resting for a bit, Fang Zhen loaded his gear and backpack onto the Jue Ying, ready to depart.

Just before leaving, he told Quade, "Get some good rest when you get back, and don’t drink any alcohol."

"I might be back tonight."

"Keep your strength up. Try to get some sleep. We might have to enter the mine again tonight."

Quade looked a little nervous at this but nodded anyway. "Alright."

Fang Zhen nodded.

When he was down in Miner Ding, Fang Zhen had been alarmed by the array made of flesh and blood.

He had a feeling about that array. The Dogman Priest had placed it in Miner Ding, constructed it from the flesh of countless Kobold corpses, and even had the Heavy-Armored Warhammer Dogman boss guard it instead of participating in some other ritual. It had to hold some kind of secret.

That Blood Sacrifice Array looked evil and mysterious. Fang Zhen even suspected it might be some kind of Summoning Array.

Delays could bring unforeseen trouble, and Fang Zhen didn’t want any more complications.

He predicted the asbestos suit would be delivered before nightfall. Once it arrived, he would get ready, pull an all-nighter, and clear the Dogman Mine in one go. No more screw-ups.

After giving Quade his instructions, Fang Zhen started the Jue Ying and sped off, leaving a cloud of dust in his wake as he returned to the Light Gate.

Fang Zhen rode his Jue Ying through Redstone Town and up the hillside. Before long, he was back at the Light Gate.

The Jue Ying was small, but it was a gas-guzzler; a full tank was only good for about a hundred kilometers.

The trade-off, however, was its incredible power and agility in mountainous and forested terrain.

Riding up the slope felt effortless. The ride was surprisingly smooth, with no jarring bumps.

’Not bad at all.’ Fang Zhen was very pleased with the Jue Ying.

He killed the engine in front of the Light Gate, dismounted, and pushed the motorcycle through it.

After a brief moment of dizziness, Fang Zhen found himself back in his living room.

He parked the motorcycle, went into his computer room, and shut down the "Dungeon Life" game peripheral. The Light Gate vanished.

Fang Zhen changed out of his gear.

He went back to the living room and picked up his phone from the coffee table. He had several missed calls from a delivery service.

"The asbestos suit is here? That was fast!" Fang Zhen’s spirits lifted.

He dialed the number.

The call went through. Fang Zhen gave his address, and the courier on the other end said he was still in the neighborhood and would be right over.

Sure enough, five minutes later, the courier arrived.

Fang Zhen opened the door and called the elevator. The courier soon arrived on his floor.

"Mr. Fang, your package." The courier was holding a large cardboard box under his arm.

’The asbestos suit must be huge,’ Fang Zhen thought. ’They couldn’t use a plastic garment bag; it needed a whole cardboard box.’

Just as he was thinking that, the courier suddenly pulled out a POS terminal. "Sir, this is a cash-on-delivery package for 3,188 yuan. I’ll need you to pay by card, please."

Fang Zhen froze.

’It’s not the asbestos suit?’

An instant later, he realized what it was.

’It’s not the asbestos suit! It’s the camo-edition Cheetah M81-7 Hunting Crossbow I bought along with the Dragon Gall Crossbow! It’s here!’
