57: Chapter 56: The Ghosts said, “That group is so weak” (Third update)
As the latter half of the night approached, Abigail Turner, who was meditating in the cave, suddenly opened her eyes: “Is everyone ready?”
“Please give the order, ma’am.” The military officers were all geared up and did a final check of their armor and magical instruments.
“Let’s go!”
The group left the cave and headed straight for the downstream area of the Rogue River.
“Vanessa Thoughts of Shadow, stay behind.
If anything happens, notify the authorities for us.”
Vanessa curled her lip and thought to herself, how petty.
You don’t want me to share the credit, but this little fairy doesn’t want to go either.
Abigail had planned tonight’s operation beforehand.
She was no fool.
Even with her family’s covert support, no fool could become a Prescott.
For the malicious ghosts she had long devised a complete capture plan.
She had tried to ask Owen Bertram for help – if he had any findings, she would have better chances – but since he refused to appear, she gave up waiting and didn’t hold much hope for his help anyway.
The strong soldiers of the Horizon Bureau set off on horseback, bypassing the Extinct Village, and reached the Rogue River in just over a Shichen.
“According to the information provided by Egbert, those victims all vanished around this area.”
Her subordinate summarized: “But a few days ago, a group of scholars were saved by some ghosts here.”
Abigail was emotionless: “All who encounter ghosts in the world are punishable by death!”
She waved her hand and one of the officers took out a flat wooden box, flipping it open to reveal an ancient compass radiating a faint spiritual light.
The compass spun, pointing towards a particular direction.
“As expected, something’s fishy!” Abigail sneered.
The quick response of the compass indicated frequent activity of the ghost recently, leaving behind dense Yin energy.
“Go!” Abigail waved her hand, and the officers immediately followed.
At the same time, they took out a talisman from their waistbands.
These were “Exorcism Talismans” that Abigail had specifically requested for this mission, with three talismans per person.
One would be enough to obliterate the soul of an ordinary ghost being.
She brought a dozen men with her, and with dozens of Exorcism Talismans unleashed, even an ordinary second-tier ghost wouldn’t stand a chance.
Inside the Ghost Zone, several knights guarded the gate, watching as the Horizon Bureau’s group passed by.
Due to the Ghost Account’s cover, the compass Abigail held did not detect them.
“It looks like they’re heading towards that fellow outside.”
“Who cares, as long as they don’t bother us.”
“First, they have to find us before they can cause us any trouble.”
“This group seems weak, they might not come back.”
A moment later, in the direction the Horizon Bureau members had gone, a sudden dark wind stirred and the officers cried out in panic: “What is this?!”
Boom!
Boom!
Boom!
The Exorcism Talismans erupted into a golden radiance, but were suppressed by an unknown force, as if grabbed by an invisible giant hand.
The talismans’ power did not fully burst forth, and the radiance quickly extinguished…
In the midst of the panic, Abigail’s harsh shout mixed in, then everything quieted down and a thick, oppressive aura swept over the land, erasing any traces.
The knights sneered, “See, I told you they were weak.”
…
At daybreak, Vanessa began to worry.
Abigail and the others hadn’t returned, and they didn’t respond to her token’s voice transmissions.
Vanessa prepared to go check on them but hesitated, unsure if she should act recklessly.
If she went and ended up not coming back like them, no one would be left to send a warning, and it would take a long time for the Horizon Bureau to realize something had gone wrong.
If Vanessa sent a warning to the authorities now, and they sent reinforcements only to find Abigail and the others had merely been delayed, it would also be awkward.
Furthermore, Abigail would no doubt mock her.
As she was struggling with her decision, a clear and optimistic voice rang out, “Good morning, Chief Flag.”
Vanessa revealed a grim smile, “Oh, you still remember me as your Chief Flag, huh?”
You brat, you left me hanging for two days!
Owen Bertram instinctively stepped back, “Ma’am?”
However, Owen’s appearance gave Vanessa an idea, “I have a task for you.” She explained Abigail’s situation and continued, “I’ll check out the downstream area of the Rogue River.
If I don’t return, use the token to alert the Horizon Bureau.”
Owen thought it was quite a coincidence and waved his hand, “I’ll go check it out first.”
“You?” Vanessa looked at him and recalled that although he was her subordinate, he was indeed somewhat stronger than her.
“No, it’s too dangerous.
I’d better go myself.” Vanessa said, recalling how she’d inadvertently pushed Owen, who was initially uninvolved, into a life-or-death predicament with the Ancient Demon Corpse.
That guilt didn’t sit well with her.
Owen looked surprised, “Won’t it be even more dangerous if you go?
What made you think you’re stronger than me?”
Vanessa was left speechless.
If it weren’t for the fact that this guy was hiding in the village, she would’ve kicked him in the face!
Owen laughed and waved his hand, “Don’t worry, I’m just going to have a look around there, and I won’t act rashly.”
He promised again, “I won’t easily leave the village’s range, so it won’t create difficulties for the Horizon Bureau.”
Vanessa reminded him, “That Abigail has a nasty temper and is ugly.
If she treats you poorly, bear with it since she’s a Prescott.”
“Understood.” Owen looked at her, “What about breakfast?”
Vanessa was speechless again, “Why are you still eating?
Hurry up and go!”
“Alright.” Owen pouted and turned to leave.
Just a few steps later, Vanessa called from behind, “Wait a moment.” Owen turned around, and she threw him a three-layer food container, “Eat while you’re on your way, don’t delay the task at hand!”
Owen looked at her stern expression, pretending to be an official worried about potential delays.
He couldn’t help but smile, “Don’t worry.”
It tasted surprisingly good.
Ghost Zone couldn’t appear during the day, but the Ghost Beings weren’t necessarily hidden.
Owen found Little Loach and told him, “Big brother has to run an errand today, so you play by yourself.”
Little Loach wasn’t satisfied, squirming in the water, his two golden whiskers like fingers pointing at Owen: “You promised to go fishing with me for food today.
It’s only been one night, and you’re already going back on your word?”
Owen put on a straight face, “Who said I’m going back on my word?
I always keep my promises!”
“But big brother is the head of the family and has to provide for us.
This is public business.
Right now, I’m part of the public office.
If I don’t work hard in the field, how will I support you and little sister?”
“It’s not easy for a man to struggle outside, is it?”
”
Can’t you show some sympathy for big brother and not accuse me for no reason?”
