Chapter 308: The Fall Of Dragonhold

Akravos stretched his hand out, causing large tendrils to instantly sprout from the ground in front of Dragonhold’s gates. Tendrils so long they spanned over 100 feet in length.

They were thick and extremely large and wide, and when they slammed into the front walls of Dragonhold, everything fell over and apart.

The impact was catastrophic.

Stones and mortar exploded outward in massive chunks, sending debris flying in every direction. The sound was like the crumbling roar of a collapsing wall.

Azam and Lysandra and a few other mages behind the walls had to do their best to move away lest the front walls of the city fall on them.

Azam activated Hyperhaste in a burst of speed, grabbing two mages by their collars and dragging them backward just as a massive section of wall crashed down where they had been standing.

The ground shook violently beneath his feet, and dust exploded upward in thick clouds that cloaked.

Lysandra threw her hands forward, reversing gravity on a falling section of wall above her head. The massive stone block stopped mid-fall and hung suspended in the air for just a moment before she flung it sideways and away from the fleeing mages below.

Her breathing was unsteady now, and sweat poured down her face as she struggled to keep up with the relentless assault.

Another large tendril grew from the ground within the city, elongating to the heights above as it tried to grab hold onto Thamoryn.

Her eyes widened as she spotted the growth from underneath her. The Grand Magus, having to choose her life first, instantly disappeared from her position in a flash of flight, abandoning the spell that kept the demons at bay from further encroaching into the city.

The magic circle above Dragonhold flickered once, twice, then shattered and the rain of light blades ceased immediately.

And in that instant, the demons surged forward.

More and more large tendrils sprouted from different parts of the city’s ground, swinging their full body lengths and bashing through buildings and people in widespread destruction.

Screams filled the air as people ran for cover, only to be crushed beneath falling debris or swept aside by another swinging tendril.

Another tendril carved through an entire row of market stalls, scattering goods and bodies alike. Blood splattered across as civilians were caught in the path of destruction.

The mages went on all defensive spells, some raising mana spheres while some tried to move away using flight.

——

In the part of the field where Ravens Grave fought...

Piers had just arrived at a safe corner after using his transport magic to move himself and Oliver out of the way, and away from the falling debris of house structures.

Elena had a shield of mana that covered her, the captain, and a few others to her side, including Ambrose.

The shield which was a supplementary protection spell of blue light suffered against the debris raining down upon it from above.

Each impact sent cracks across its surface, and Elena gritted her teeth as she poured more mana into maintaining it.

"Hold on!" she shouted over the noise. "Just hold on!"

But even that wasn’t the end.

Whilst the widespread destruction continued,

Malachar, Demon Lord of Dread, levitated off the ground and floated towards Dragonhold.

She had both her hands stretched to her sides, calling forth a thick purple fog that spread out to cover the fullness of the city.

The fog crept across rooftops and poured down into streets, swallowing everything in its path until all of Dragonhold was shrouded in darkness.

The thick purple fog came with pathogens that when inhaled caused black veins to bulge on the body of the victims before their bodies went absolutely stiff.

And every Dragonhold mage and citizen was a target right now. Mages started falling one by one.

A young mage near the eastern gate gasped as he breathed in the fog. His eyes widened in horror as black veins began crawling up his neck and across his face.

He tried to scream, but his throat seized up and his body went rigid as he collapsed to the ground with his eyes still staring blankly.

Another mage nearby saw him fall and tried to run, but the fog was everywhere now. She made it three steps before she too inhaled the poison.

Her legs locked up mid-stride, and she toppled forward, crashing face-first onto the ground.

All around the city, mages and citizens alike fell victim to Malachar’s spell, leaving them defenseless against the continuous en masse of demons that rushed through the thick cover of the fog.

The demons tore through the paralyzed victims without mercy as their claws and fangs ripped every flesh apart.

Katherine held her breath as the fog rolled toward her position. She backed up closer to Elena’s barrier, with her eyes darting left and right as she tried to find a way out.

"Don’t breathe it in!" she shouted to the others. "Whatever you do, don’t breathe it in!" 𝒻𝑟𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝑛𝘰𝓋ℯ𝘭.𝘤𝘰𝘮

But there was nowhere to go and this fog was everywhere.

——

Meanwhile, somewhere in the clouds above was Ursula, who was nearing completion of her spell.

She had reached the skies at the start of the demon invasion and had been casting the celestial magic spell all this while as it required some time for her Mystic Field to extend into space and pull a cosmic body downwards.

She was going to bring down the same meteorite as she once did against the army of Xathia.

And her target this time were the demons.

Her hands were raised high above her head, glowing with brilliant white light as magic circles spun rapidly in the air around her.

Sweat dripped down her face, and her entire body trembled from the effort of maintaining such a powerful spell.

Just a little longer, she thought desperately. Just a little longer and it’ll be done.

High above her, beyond the atmosphere, a massive meteorite had begun its descent. It burned brightly as it entered the planet’s gravitational pull.

"Hm..." Morrigan, who was still down below, muttered as she lifted her head towards the skies. She had sensed the casting of magic above them.

In one single leap that left a crater in its wake, she flew towards Ursula and grabbed onto her neck before she could even react.

Ursula hadn’t expected that to happen and only opened her eyes from her focusing when it was already too late.

Her concentration was put to an end and the magic circles around her faded as Morrigan’s grip tightened around her throat.

Ursula’s hands clawed desperately at Morrigan’s arm, trying to pry herself free, but the Demon Lord’s strength was absolute.

"No," Ursula choked out, barely able to form the word. "No... please..."

Morrigan’s expression remained cold and indifferent as she tilted her hand, causing Ursula’s head to snap along with it.

Morrigan let the mage’s lifeless body fall all the way to the ground, from several feet into the skies.
