My Enemy Became My Cultivation Companion-Chapter 920 - 541: After the Revision
Nightfall was gloomy, and the corridor whipped with a chilling wind, as if peeling off a layer of skin.
Yet what is arsenic to one is honey to another; Donggong Ruoshu only felt extremely comfortable, as if standing atop the hills of a vast grassland, arms wide open to the wind.
"What a coincidence, you're a ghost too."
Donggong Ruoshu turned and patted her shoulder, looking as if they were old buddies.
The face paused in place, with a hint of bewilderment in her eyes.
Unperturbed, Donggong Ruoshu realized her earlier fear was unwarranted. It turned out to be a ghost, a familiar face in an unfamiliar land; Donggong Ruoshu was especially delighted and carefully examined the face of the ghost before her.
A long oval face, pale cheeks, exquisite features, and a slender build—a pity she became a ghost at such a youthful age. As Donggong Ruoshu was studying her, she suddenly noticed a fluffy glow behind her, upon closer inspection…
A rather large fox tail.
Still, it's a fox ghost often seen in Liaozhai.
Donggong Ruoshu's eyes flickered with curiosity that seemed out of place, while the Fox Immortal shuddered, feeling her scalp go numb under the scrutiny.
Just then, footsteps echoed from the corridor.
The Fox Immortal's gaze subtly furrowed, and sensing something, she transformed into a gust of dark wind, darting out through the window.
Tap, tap.
The footsteps halted, and a figure draped in mourning clothes suddenly appeared in the corridor.
Chen Yi ascended the stairs, immediately assaulted by the strong stench of fox and blood, wrinkling his nose in distaste.
Turning, Donggong Ruoshu hovered in the corridor, her face still full of curiosity.
Chen Yi approached with his sword in hand, frowned slightly, and bluntly asked, "Where's the ghost?"
Donggong Ruoshu was momentarily stunned, then promptly replied, "Me."
"I'm asking if you saw any other ghost, like the Fox Immortal."
"Yes, she ran that way; she seemed to have also hanged someone."
Chen Yi opened the window, glanced inside, and indeed saw a corpse hanging from the beam. Upon closer inspection, he noticed the person wore a Yanyue Crown, wide robe, and long sleeves, resembling a Wandering Taoist.
Aside from the broken neck, there were no obvious wounds; the face was dark, with bluish-purple bruises at the brow... Chen Yi scouted with Divine Sense and found no soul, dead from soul extraction.
The floor beneath was soaked in blood, with a sword half drawn beside it—the deceased had evidently no time to react. The sword was slender and round-tipped with a double-beast guard, nimble and flexible, different from Yin Sword Mountain's Han Dynasty style; this was Ming Dynasty style. Three words surfaced in Chen Yi's mind… Dragon and Tiger Mountain.
In a vicinity of three thousand miles, who dares attack a Taoist from Dragon and Tiger Mountain this way?
An impressive background, possessing high cultivation!
Having sorted out the information in mere moments, Chen Yi wasted no time and turned to where Donggong Ruoshu pointed, leaping out the window.
Donggong Ruoshu quickly followed.
The night was ink-black, as thick clouds gathered over the sky, causing the bright moonlight to vanish in moments, plunging into pitch darkness.
Chen Yi curled his lips into a smile.
Mere deception.
He silently recited a spell and upon reopening his eyes, they gleamed with golden light.
His fingers continued to form the incantations, as his gaze shifted, spotting a hint of a fox tail swiftly darting across the roof.
With light steps, Chen Yi executed Peak Stepping Cloud.
Donggong Ruoshu initially surged ahead, leaving him far behind, wondering why he was so slow. In the next instant, he flashed before her, and in another moment, the Daoist robe had already soared dozens of yards away.
Miss Donggong was astonished, hastily following.
Meanwhile, a commotion had erupted behind at the inn.
Though her pace wasn't slow, she hadn't even covered half the distance when the two in the distance were already engaged in combat.
The Fox Immortal turned, a flick of the wrist dropped a spark, and in an instant, a dark thunder struck toward Chen Yi.
The alley was silent and desolate, the thunderous roar like ink blotting on white paper, sending startled birds soaring; Chen Yi shifted his steps, dodging the dark thunder, and was about to press forward when unexpectedly, the thumb-thick purple-black bolt bent, turning toward his back!
Chen Yi had no choice but to turn and raise his hand; Sword Intent surged as two fingers pinched the bolt mid-air, which sparked with thunderous burst before being flung back at the Fox Immortal.
To Chen Yi's surprise, the bolt seemed to return to the sea, instantly merging with the Fox Immortal, leaving her unscathed; instead, she took the chance to swiftly pull away.
This Thunder Control Technique, cannot merely be described as skillful.
A more fitting term surfaced in Chen Yi's mind.
Masterful.
The Fox Immortal darted with electric light, leaping wildly between rooftops, under the thick clouds becoming ever more dazzling; anyone peeking out their window would see the Spirit Fox leap, seeming like an omen of luck for the new year.
Chen Yi formed incantations and rode the wind, exerting Peak Stepping Cloud to its fullest. Within several steps, he closed in, while the Fox Immortal tossed talismans that summoned gusts of Gang Wind, disrupting the airflow below Chen Yi, causing him to stumble; regaining balance, he resumed pursuit, yet as he quickened, so did the Fox Immortal, closing only inches despite the prolonged chase.
The two figures pursued relentlessly, treading over countless rooftiles, raising clouds of dust, yet never converging.
Three more bolts of thunder struck; Chen Yi raised his sword to disperse them, his frown deepening.
If it were a direct fight, he could exorcise the demon with merely a few sword strikes; yet this Fox Immortal was exceedingly cunning, continuously casting spells, without showing signs of slowing down; instead, she leapt swiftly and high like a flea.
In the deserted county's streets and alleys, she maneuvered with ghostly agility; several times, Chen Yi nearly struck with his sword, only for her to deftly sidestep, slipping out of reach.
An old fox is cunning, an old horse is sly, an old rabbit eludes the eagle.
