Chapter 265: Willow Green

We made love before our trip to Willow Green. He insisted to drive on the way and since I was exhausted, I agreed.

"Do you still know the way to your old house?" I asked.

"Of course! You should rest. I’ll wake you up after an hour so we could eat." He said.

I nodded but took my phone first and dialled Caden’s number. I missed him so much so I wanted to know if he was okay and let him know about our trip.

After a few rings, he answered. "Mommy?"

"Hello, my baby. How are you?" I asked.

"I’m fine. But I miss you and daddy. Is he with you?" Caden asked.

I took to put my phone on speaker so Jayden could talk to him.

"Hello, son. I’m with mommy. We’re on our way to daddy’s old hometown. We miss you so much." Jayden said.

Caden sighed. "Ahm, dad? Can I ask you something?"

Jayden looked at me with a frown face. "What is it? You know you can ask me anything."

"Are you on speaker? I don’t want mommy to hear it."

I frowned and was going to rant when Jayden took the phone from me and turned the speaker off. I crossed my arms on my chest and glared at him. He parked the car first on the roadside before going back to Caden.

"Don’t worry. Mommy could not hear you anymore." Jayden said.

Jayden POV

I heard Caden sigh from the other line and waited for him to answer. I was happy when he suddenly asked me. My memories of him were all blurry. There were glimpse of it, but I couldn’t clearly remember and that saddened me.

From what I knew, I missed three years of his life and now, he would be living away from us until high school.

Peggy told me about everything that happened.

I felt guilty because I should be the one protecting our family, but Caden, at the age of six, accepted the position of the crown prince of Flousia to gain power and protect his parents and Alira.

I knew he was traumatised by what happened in Florida. He saw his mother shoot one of the enemies and killed the man. He lost his baby sister and almost lost me and his mom.

He was braver and stronger than me. He was able to handle those nightmares, unlike me who became ill and hid his true identity after losing someone.

I heard Caden sigh again.

"What is it?" I asked.

Then he sighed again before telling me what happened. He said Alira was mad at him because he forgot to text her this afternoon. I wanted to laugh because they were six years old but it seemed that they took their engagement seriously.

Caden wanted to apologize to Alira, but he didn’t want to just tell her. He wanted to do something for her.

"What’s that about? Any problem?" Peggy asked.

I smiled and told her about Caden’s problem and she laughed at it.

"What did you tell her?"

"You heard it. I said he just has to be sincere and should come from the heart. Can you imagine? He’s six and he’s asking me how to comfort his girlfriend." I said.

Peggy laughed. "Well, like father like son."

I glared at her and shook my head. "Go to sleep. I’ll wake you up after an hour."

She nodded and then reclined the passenger seat so she could rest.

PEGGY POV

I felt someone was trying to wake me up. When I opened my eyes, I saw Jayden gently slapping my shoulder. He wasn’t looking at me and wasn’t driving either. His eyes were staring at something in front of the car. freewёbn૦νeɭ.com

I frowned and stood to see what he was looking at. My eyes widened and I was unsure of what I was seeing.

"Where are we?" I asked confused.

"Willow Green." He simply answered.

I couldn’t believe what he said. The town was a lot different eight years ago.

What was once a lively and beautiful place was now full of tall grasses, vines and roots that had held on every bit they could get of Willow Green. The sterile and clean-looking town now seemed more like a forest because those hedges and gardens grew beyond their now ragged borders.

Most gates still stood in their structures as if nothing had changed. A few were still ajar for one reason or another, possibly left open in a dash. Shattered roof tiles lay in the streets and lawns and crusty, parched paint faded from the walls and banisters.

From what I could remember, Willow Green was once a developing town on the rise to its better future. But it was now somewhat consumed by nature. Silence had taken hold and it would’ve been deafening if it were not for several animals that had made the town their home.

I could hear the bird songs, crinkling bushes and the occasional howl that filled the air. It was somehow scary and chilling.

We parked on the roadside and went out of the car to see the establishments that were popular before, but all the houses and the businesses were abandoned. Crumbled wooden pathways and a few hollow boats were docked at the port. Some of the boats had bird nests in them, but most were completely surrounded by trash and junk and the place was gradually destroyed.

We went around town, walked into the homes and visited those previously private parts of the town, still assuming it had not been destroyed, but we felt like there was an unpleasant feeling of hopelessness we could not avoid.

"What do you think happened here?" I asked.

"I’m not sure." Jayden simply answered.

He frowned when we stopped in front of an apartment complex. The building was burned but it was still standing and some parts were not consumed by the fire.

"This is where we lived." He said before running inside the building.

"Love!" I called and followed him.

He stopped in front of the last door in the hallway on the second floor of the complex. My heart pounded and chills ran through my spine. I saw him hesitate at first, and then he took the key to unlock the door.
