Chapter 127: Her Second Mate

Violet

Kael.

The sensation cut through my anger, replacing it with something gentler. Exactly what I needed right now. I turned in the direction of the pull and followed it through the less crowded streets.

He was nearby, somewhere. I hoped he wasn’t too preoccupied with something. Even if he was, I think I would be just fine with seeing him. It would take my mind off those two idiots’ faces.

That night where I lost my life flashed in my mind again and I forced myself to swallow down the rising bitterness I felt.

The pull grew stronger the closer I got... until something felt... off.

My steps slowed.

Something was wrong.

The bond was there. I could feel it clearly, but the sensation wasn’t quite right at the same time. Like it had been altered somehow.

I frowned and shook my head. Maybe I was just confused. My head was a mess, and seeing Elena today with that wolf had merely unlocked some unpleasant memories and affected my senses a little.

I continued forward, trying to steady my breathing.

I slowly heightened my senses back to the comfortable state I preferred them, and that sense of wrongness intensified.

No...

What is this?

This isn’t him...

’It can’t...’

I pushed through another cluster of people and stopped dead.

There, a few feet away, standing at a vendor’s stall and examining carved wooden figures with an expression of boyish fascination, was a man I had never seen before.

He wasn’t Kael.

But the bond...

My pulse nearly stuttered to a slow stop.

He was tall, almost as tall as Kael was. Short dark brown hair fell just below his ears, slightly tousled as if he had been running his hands through it. He wore clothing that was unmistakably foreign. A striking deep forest green coat with intricate golden embroidery along the collar and sleeves. A half-cape hung from one shoulder, secured with a golden clasp, giving him an almost regal bearing despite his casual stance.

Even from this distance, even through the heavy coat he wore, I could see the slight definition of muscles.

But his face held my attention the most.

But it was his face that held my attention. Boyishly handsome, with strong features that hadn’t quite lost their youthful softness.

’No...’

Standing beside him was an older slender man, just as tall as he was, and wearing similar clothing without the half cape.

The dark-haired man said something to the vendor, and even from here I could hear the warmth in his voice, the genuine interest. Something in my chest stirred at the way he laughed at something the vendor said.

And then, as if sensing my stare, he stiffened.

His head turned, and soft dark green eyes locked onto mine with startling precision. The moment the same shocking realisation flickered across his face, panic, along with another intensified sensation, flooded through me.

No. No. No. No.

This wasn’t happening!

I turned away sharply, my mind reeling. I was seeing things. Feeling things. Hearing things that couldn’t be real. Maybe the encounter with Elena had affected me more than I’d thought. I only had one—

"Wait!" A hand closed around my wrist, jerking me to a stop.

I whirled back, my mouth opening to protest, when I stopped dead.

He was right there. Inches away. Close enough that I could see the silver flecks in his green eyes. His chest rose and fell with rapid breaths.

My eyes widened. He had crossed that distance in less than a heartbeat, moving with a speed that reminded me sharply of how Kael moved when he wasn’t bothering to mask his power.

My mouth dried up.

This was a Supreme Alpha.

A subtle fresh scent hit my nose and it caused a warm, fluttering pull to bloom in my chest. It was softer than Kael’s usual sharp tug, but just as impossible to ignore. My energy seemed to lurch towards him as if reaching for something familiar.

’No.....’

"I—" My voice came out strained as I finally found my voice. "Please don’t mind me. This is a mistake, I thought you were someone else. I need to—I should—I need to go. Please let me go."

I stared at him, at the hand wrapped around my wrist, and felt my mind try to process what was happening while simultaneously refusing to accept it.

But he didn’t release me. If anything, his grip tightened slightly, not enough to hurt but enough to make it clear he had no intention of letting me leave.

His voice was uneven. "Why are you—"

Behind me, I sensed the wolf Kael had assigned to tail me growing closer. He immediately materialized at my side within seconds, his posture careful but tense.

"Unhand her." His tone was professionally polite but with an undertone of steel. His eyes assessed the dark-haired man quickly, and I saw the moment recognition hit, saw him realize this was another Supreme Alpha and that any wrong move could create a diplomatic incident.

He went rigid on the spot.

The slender man who had been standing in front of the stall was rushing towards us, his face pale with panic.

"Rowan!" he hissed frantically, grabbing the Supreme Alpha’s arm with both hands. "Let her go. Now. What are you—you can’t just... Can’t you see she is terrified?!"

Rowan seemed to suddenly become aware of what he was doing. His eyes widened slightly, and he immediately released my wrist, stepping back with his hands raised in a gesture of apology.

"I—please pardon me," he said quickly, a confused frown on his face as his attention fully focused on me in a way that made my skin prickle with awareness. "Are you alright? I didn’t mean to—I just needed you to wait—to not leave before I could—" He cut himself off with a sigh and briefly closed his eyes, realizing he wasn’t making much sense.

I stumbled backward, my heart hammering so hard I could feel it in my throat. My whole body tingled and that wrongness in the bond screamed at me.

This wasn’t Kael. But it felt like him.

How could it feel like him when it wasn’t him?!
