Chapter 172: Women

Violet

I wordlessly turned and followed him as he led me in the opposite direction.

What I though had been a road turned out to be several paths, some a lot wider than the other. We climbed one of the numerous rising steps and slopes that curved along from the edge of the cliff and deeper into it. The climb upwards was strangely not sharp.

Other wolves passed us on even wider paths, and I froze mid-step when I saw what some were riding.

It looked like the carriage Ila had ridden back in Fresna, but it was smaller and it seemed exposed while someone sat on a small burly hairy animal that pulled the makeshift cart. Its wheels rolled smoothly over the wide path it took.

It didn’t take long for us to get to the top, and when we did, my heart nearly stopped.

The buildings weren’t as tall as the ones in Orpal or Fresna. Most of them were only five stories tall at most, with many being even shorter. But what they lacked in height, they made up for it in beauty.

Nearly all of them were painted a creamy white that gleamed in the sunlight. The roofs were either flat or domed and the rest of the other things like windows doors, and other elements, were in different vibrant colours.

As Rowan led me closer, the ground underneath our feet soon shifted from coarse sand to wide smooth stone tiles that had been laid in beautiful patterns. And then there were the strange trees I had never seen before.

They were very tall with thick trunks that grew thinner the higher it went. The leaves were strange and looked like wide feathers bunched up together at the very top. And they made a soft fluttering sound as they swayed in the warm breeze, blending with the distinct crash of the waves.

And the people...

The wolves here were dressed in light, loose clothing that seemed to flow with every movement. Women wore dresses made of thin, almost translucent fabric, decorated with bright floral patterns that looked scandalous compared to the heavy, practical clothes I was used to seeing.

And the men...

My face heated as I noticed that many of them weren’t wearing any shirts at all. Just loose trousers and bare chests, with gleaming tanned skin.

I felt my cheeks flush, and I looked away quickly, but nearly everywhere I turned I was faced with one form of nudity or the other.

What was this?!

"What are they wearing?!" I whispered hurriedly, turning to look at him.

He smiled at my reaction, and I suddenly felt annoyed.

"I haven’t been here in years... The streets have changed quite a bit."

’That’s all you have to say?!’

A group of women were passing by when Rowan raised his hand in a friendly gesture.

"Excuse me." His voice was a bit more polite and warm as he talked to them. "I am looking for a place called the Sunweave Inn. Do you know where I might find it?"

They stopped and two of the women started talking to him, while one of them stared. And I watched as her eyes swept over Rowan with obvious interest.

She was stunning. Her skin was smooth and sun-kissed, and she had straight dark hair that reached her waist.

But her dress...

My eyes dropped to her chest before I could stop myself.

Her boobs were big. A lot bigger than mine. I had never seen one so big.

And so exposed!

The neckline of her dress was cut so low that I could see the full swell of her cleavage, and I did not even understand how, but the thin fabric was holding everything together, even though it seemed like with any slight movement, her breasts would just pop out from hiding.

The dress itself was a pale blue, nearly translucent in the sunlight, with delicate floral embroidery that did nothing but only highlight the curves underneath.

And she was taller.

I found myself mesmerized for a moment as she laughed along with the others at something Rowan said, throwing her head back in a way that made her chest bounce like water. The movement was hypnotic, and I blinked rapidly, tearing my gaze away.

Then I glared at her.

She was still staring at Rowan with an intensity that made my stomach twist uncomfortably. It seemed like she was drinking him in with her eyes.

What was wrong with this woman and why was she even acting so shameless?

"The Sunweave Inn?" she finally spoke up just as one of the others had already given him directions. Her voice was smooth and teasing as she tilted her head. "That’s quite a way from here, stranger." She took a small step closer to him, and I watched her fingers brush a strand of hair behind her ear in a gesture that seemed deliberately slow. "And literally at the other end of the Capital. There are quite nicer inns around here."

Rowan smiled that easy, charming smile of his, the one that made him look approachable and kind.

"I just like the place very much."

Now wasn’t the time to even be smiling like that!

I briefly closed my eyes, irritated at myself.

This was just the bond. I didn’t really feel this way.

But still, he had to be aware of the way she was looking at him.

Or maybe he just didn’t care?

"Is that so? But what’s a handsome stranger like you doing all the way out here? Are you from Orpal?"

"Just passing through," he said lightly. "My companion and I are traveling."

"Your companion?" The woman’s eyes flicked briefly toward me, and she stiffened.

I lightly frowned. Why was she reacting like that.

The others too glanced at me and the face of one of them fell.

The one who had given Rowan directions let out a small nervous laughter and grabbed her sultry friend by the arm.

"Please, enjoy your stay," she quickly said before running off.

I felt a wave of relief wash over me the moment they went past us.

I hoped I never crossed paths with them again.

"Is something wrong?" Rowan asked as he stared down at me.

"Why did you even have to ask the women in the first place rather than the passing men?"

The words had tumbled out of my mouth before I could stop them, and when I realised just what I had said, I froze.
