My Fiancé's Scandals Never End, So I Married His Uncle Instead-Chapter 125: A Distant Medical Record
Second Young Master Sutton’s probing gaze landed on the two technicians in work uniforms. "The Ninth Master isn’t setting a trap, is he?"
"You jest, Second Young Master Sutton. Our boss is an honorable man and scorns such underhanded tactics," Evan Rhodes said calmly. "These two are from the most authoritative testing agencies in Metropia and Port Sovereign. If you’re not at ease, Second Young Master Sutton, you can arrange for some of your own trusted Appraisers to join."
Second Young Master Sutton chuckled. "No, no, that won’t be necessary. I trust the Ninth Master’s character. It’s just a formality. Please, proceed."
But Evan Rhodes didn’t move. "No rush. We’ll wait for Miss Sutton and do it all at once."
"Alright, she’ll be here any minute. Assistant Rhodes, and all you elite members of the legal team, please, have a seat. Have some tea while you wait."
The hospital room had a reception area. Evan Rhodes didn’t stand on ceremony and sat on the sofa with the legal team, waiting in silence. Second Young Master Sutton took an exquisite box from his assistant and walked over to Evan Rhodes.
"I hear the Ninth Master is fond of flamboyant things. I’ve recently acquired a Blood Jade Coral. I was wondering if it would be convenient for Assistant Rhodes to take it back to Metropia as a gift for the Ninth Master’s amusement."
"The Ninth Master has strict rules. I daren’t accept gifts on his behalf without permission. My apologies, Second Young Master Sutton." Evan Rhodes politely declined. "If you are truly set on giving it, Second Young Master Sutton, you might as well send your own man to Metropia."
Second Young Master Sutton didn’t seem disappointed. "In that case, I’ll wait until I have time to go to Metropia myself and apologize to the Ninth Master and Miss Sterling in person."
Evan Rhodes lowered his head to sip his tea and said no more.
Nearby, Kenneth Sutton’s strength was failing. He was on a ventilator, having drifted into a state of lethargy.
More than half an hour later, the sound of high heels echoed from the doorway.
The group of men in the reception area all looked over. Summer Sutton pushed the door open, her steps faltering slightly when she saw the large group of men in the hospital room.
"Summer, come in." Second Young Master Sutton stood and beckoned to her. In a few words, he explained the purpose of Evan Rhodes and the legal team’s visit. "So, to ensure the proper transition of the equity, we need to do a DNA test between you and Father."
Summer Sutton was clearly caught off guard. She hadn’t expected Kian Sterling to relent, much less send his most trusted assistant, Evan Rhodes, to personally oversee the matter.
"Hello, Assistant Rhodes." She greeted Evan Rhodes first. "I have no objection to the test."
"Hello, Miss Sutton," Evan Rhodes replied, his tone unsurprised. "You have your own social circle in Port Sovereign, Miss Sutton. The Boss will not interfere. From now on, you no longer need to be covert about your movements. Effective immediately, the Ninth Master will withdraw the bodyguards assigned to you. Please take care of yourself."
Summer Sutton adjusted her trench coat, then took off her wig and sunglasses. Since Evan Rhodes had laid it all out in the open, she couldn’t be bothered to make excuses for reconnecting with the Sutton Family. "Please thank the Ninth Master for me as well, for holding onto my equity for so long."
Evan Rhodes glanced at his watch. "Well then, Chairman Sutton, Miss Sutton, shall we begin?"
With the help of the medical staff, a blood sample was drawn from Kenneth Sutton and placed in a special sample bag. Kenneth Sutton then signed and pressed his thumbprint on the sample label. Summer Sutton watched as the technician from the testing agency affixed a label with the number 1 on it, carefully put it away, and announced, "Sample 1 is ready. Please continue."
Evan Rhodes gestured for Summer Sutton to proceed.
Summer Sutton extended her arm. The technician professionally drew her blood, placed the sample in a bag following the same procedure, and affixed a label with the number 3. "Sample 3 is also ready. Miss Sutton, please sign and provide your thumbprint."
Summer Sutton’s eyes swept over the two sample bags. ’1 and 3... so where’s 2?’
She lowered her head to sign and add her thumbprint, asking casually, "Why is there no Sample 2?"
"There is, but it has nothing to do with you, Miss Sutton," the technician said curtly, then fell silent.
Once the samples were collected, Evan Rhodes prepared to leave. "Chairman Sutton, Miss Sutton, Second Young Master Sutton, we’ll take our leave."
"When will the results be out?" asked Second Young Master Sutton.
The technician replied, "Three to five days. Rest assured, Second Young Master Sutton, the legal team will monitor the entire process to guarantee the absolute impartiality of the results."
The large group departed.
Inside the hospital room, Second Young Master Sutton asked Summer Sutton, "Why is Kian Sterling suddenly so agreeable? You’ve been with him for a long time. Based on your understanding of him, could there be a trick to this?"
Summer Sutton’s gaze was still fixed in the direction the group had left. "The Ninth Master is a man of his word."
Second Young Master Sutton’s expression softened. "Once you have the equity, little sister, don’t forget what you promised me..."
"I don’t even have it yet, and you’re already coveting it, Second Young Master?"
"Just a preemptive warning. Don’t think Kian Sterling gave this up willingly. Behind the scenes, Father and I pulled a lot of strings to apply pressure. Don’t go burning your bridges, Summer," Second Young Master Sutton cautioned, then looked at the weary Kenneth Sutton. "Father already drafted the will this morning. We’re just waiting for you to sign."
"Where is it?"
"Right here." Second Young Master Sutton took a will from the cabinet by Kenneth Sutton’s bed. Summer Sutton took it. It was stated in black and white: Kenneth Sutton’s personal assets would be inherited by Mrs. Sutton and the children she had with him. After the equity was evenly distributed among them, two percent would be set aside for Summer Sutton, the daughter of his ex-wife, Sylvia Lowell. This was on the condition that Summer Sutton return to the Sutton Family, and that her two percent would be tied to Second Young Master Sutton, giving her only dividend rights.
Even so, it was a considerable sum.
"The Sutton Family’s way of doing things is as distasteful as ever." Summer Sutton casually signed her name, rose to her feet with a cold expression, and didn’t spare Kenneth Sutton a single glance. "I’m leaving."
"Summer," Kenneth Sutton spoke up. "I know you hate me, but your mother’s death wasn’t directly my fault. We are father and daughter. In my final moments, I hope we can reconcile."
"Is tying my fate to Second Young Master Sutton your way of reconciling, Mr. Sutton?" Summer Sutton sneered. "I’m afraid I’m not worthy of such ’fatherly love’."
She stormed out, slamming the door behind her.
Behind her, Second Young Master Sutton leisurely followed.
While waiting for the elevator, Second Young Master Sutton smiled. "Your mother also passed away in this very hospital. She was overly obsessed with perfumery, spending seven days straight in her lab until her mental energy was completely depleted. If you look into it, it really didn’t have much to do with Father’s remarriage. Her medical records are still here. Would you like to see them, Summer?"
At the mention of her mother, Summer Sutton’s expression softened slightly. "Where are they?"
Second Young Master Sutton lowered his head and made a call.
A few minutes later, an assistant brought a medical file from the records room. On its few yellowed pages was the doctor’s concise conclusion: chronic nervous exhaustion, coupled with severe mental depletion, had induced a heart attack...
Summer Sutton flipped through it page by page, her gaze finally settling on the blood type listed in the file.
After a pause of more than ten seconds, she nonchalantly closed the file and asked Second Young Master Sutton, "I’d like to see... Chairman Sutton’s medical records as well."
"We’re family, no need to be so formal." Second Young Master Sutton gestured to his assistant. Kenneth Sutton’s medical file was quickly brought over. Summer Sutton slowly flipped through it from beginning to end before handing it back to him.
"You seemed quite absorbed in those records, Summer. Any thoughts?" Second Young Master Sutton glanced at her.
"I’m going to my mother’s grave to tell her that the heartless man who wronged her will be joining her soon."
After speaking these cold words, Summer Sutton entered the elevator without a backward glance.
