My First Love Died, Now My Step Uncle Wants Me-Chapter 94: Little Uncle’s Punishment
CLATTER. Nina Wynn’s phone fell to the floor.
The voice on the other end continued, "If you need your uncle, call back later. Don’t go bothering him during his special moment, little girl. They finally got married, after all..."
"If it’s an emergency, you can tell me, and I’ll pass it on to him later. But whatever it is, just hold on. Don’t interrupt your uncle on his wedding night..."
The man seemed to have had a lot to drink, slurring through a series of uncomfortable remarks before finally hanging up.
Nina felt as if the voice from the phone was a ravenous beast, making her heart swell with a dull ache. She didn’t even have the strength to pick up her phone.
She stared blankly at the phone for a long time before slowly walking over and picking it up.
Just as she turned on the screen, the phone suddenly rang.
It was an unknown number.
She looked at the number, hesitated for a moment, then pressed the answer key.
A lazy, low, magnetic voice came from the other end. "Nina Wynn, I told you. If you dare to not answer my calls, I’ll tell your uncle everything about us."
Nina’s face was expressionless, but the hand gripping her phone was trembling slightly. "I want to go out and see the snow. Can you come pick me up?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end, followed by a low chuckle. "Are you asking me out on a date?"
Nina gripped her phone so tightly her knuckles turned white. "Are you willing?"
The man continued to chuckle. "What, you don’t think I’m Crystal Rhodes’s boyfriend anymore? Didn’t you say you wouldn’t get involved with anyone connected to her? We’re supposed to be in an arranged marriage, you know."
Nina said in a low voice, "Finn Prescott, are you coming or not?"
Finn Prescott’s voice sounded rather lazy. "Tsk, tsk. If I don’t come, does that mean you’ll avoid me whenever you see me from now on? I have no problem coming, but your uncle... will he let you out in the middle of the night?"
Nina said quietly, "Don’t worry about all that. Just tell me, are you coming or not?"
He clicked his tongue, then chuckled. "I’m coming. Who else is going to look after a little princess like you? I’ll be there in half an hour!"
As soon as he finished speaking, Nina hung up.
She changed into a black puffer jacket and checked the backpack she had brought with her. Nothing inside had been touched; it was all there, even the key to her rental apartment.
After packing a few things, she sat on her bed for a moment.
But she quickly found she couldn’t sit there. The moment she did, her mind was flooded with images of what the man had said—Caleb Rhodes and Rosalind Lowell on their wedding night.
She couldn’t stop herself from wondering if Caleb Rhodes would kiss Rosalind Lowell the same way he had kissed her.
’I shouldn’t be thinking about this.’
She stood up, shouldered her backpack, and climbed over the balcony railing.
By this time, Warner Zimmerman was already asleep.
Although Caleb Rhodes was very strict with her, he hadn’t completely restricted her freedom. She got out of the house easily.
The snow was still falling heavily. She stood under a tree for only a short while, and a dusting of snow already covered her shoulders.
The wind was strong, too, WHOOSHING against her chest, making her feel as if another raw, aching hole had been torn in her heart.
A little while later, a black Hummer sped over.
The window rolled down slowly, revealing a strikingly handsome face.
Sharp brows, bright eyes, and thin, chiseled lips. His features were so defined they looked as if they’d been carved. If not for Caleb Rhodes’s face for comparison, Nina would have thought this was the most handsome face she had ever seen.
Finn Prescott gestured to her. "Get in!"
Just as Nina was about to pull open the car door, Finn added, "Sit up front, in the passenger seat!"
Nina got in the car.
The heat was blasting inside the car. Moving so suddenly from the freezing cold into such warmth, she couldn’t help but shiver.
Finn Prescott clicked his tongue and handed her a milk tea from beside the armrest console. "It’s hot."
Just as Nina took the milk tea, a charming, feminine voice came from the back seat. "Well, well. I was wondering why you went and stood in line for milk tea but wouldn’t let me have any. So this is why!"
Nina frowned and turned her head to see an exquisitely beautiful face.
She had big, wavy curls, fiery red lips, and her eyes and brows bore a slight resemblance to Finn Prescott’s.
Before Nina could react, the woman reached out and pinched her cheek. "Tsk, so adorable and sweet. Your little face is so pinchable!"
Startled, Nina flinched back, nearly dropping the milk tea.
The woman seemed not to have had her fill and reached out to pinch her again, but Finn grabbed her wrist, his face dark. "Ruby Prescott, I’m warning you, don’t you dare pinch her face!"
He must not have been gentle, because Ruby Prescott cried out in pain. "Ow, ow, ow! Let go, Finn Prescott! Is that any way to treat your older sister?"
Finn Prescott let her go. "Get out!"
Ruby Prescott muttered a curse. "Just drop me at the next intersection. I’ll walk the rest of the way myself."
Finn Prescott’s face was grim. "No. Get out now. Who told you to get so handsy?"
Ruby Prescott patted the seat and said to Nina, "You’re Nina Wynn, right? This kid hasn’t slept in three days. Be careful, don’t let him drive you into a ditch!"
Nina was extremely embarrassed, unsure what to do with the milk tea in her hands. She said in a low voice, "Maybe... maybe we should just forget it. I can go by myself."
Finn’s expression darkened even further. Before he could speak, Ruby Prescott got out of the car herself. "No, no, don’t you go! If you leave, this kid will tattle on me to my older brother. It’s better if I go."
With that, she got out of the car.
The moment the door closed, Finn immediately made a U-turn, and the car sped off into the distance.
Nina glanced back at the thinly-dressed Ruby Prescott and asked softly, "Is she your sister?"
Finn Prescott gave a lazy "Mhm."
Nina added, "It’s so late. Is it okay to leave her out there all by herself?"
Finn Prescott scoffed. "The person who’d dare to mess with her hasn’t been born yet!"
Seeing that Nina was about to say more, Finn cut her off. "Forget about her. Let’s talk about you. Why are you going to see the snow this late at night?"
He clicked his tongue. "Can’t you watch it from your uncle’s yard?"
Nina fell silent, cradling the milk tea.
She had never been a talkative person, and with her mind in turmoil, she had no idea what to say to Finn Prescott for the moment.
After a long pause, she said softly, "I want to go to the top of Mount Caelus to see the snow."
Finn Prescott glanced at her.
Her hair wasn’t tied up, and the jet-black strands falling beside her face made her skin seem as white as snow.
Finn Prescott’s gaze darkened slightly. "It’s almost one in the morning, and you want to go to the top of Mount Caelus to see the snow?"
Nina lowered her eyes and gave a soft "mhm."
Finn Prescott suddenly pulled the car over and got out, entering a roadside supermarket.
A little while later, he came out carrying a large bag, plus a blanket and a hot water bottle.
He opened the door and shoved everything into Nina’s arms. "This was all I could find in the middle of the night, so you’ll have to make do. It’s cold on top of Mount Caelus. What made you suddenly decide to go there at this hour?"
Then he noticed Nina was just holding the milk tea, with no intention of drinking it. His brow furrowed and he raised an eyebrow. "Don’t you like this flavor?"
Nina shook her head.
She was a person of few words and didn’t know Finn Prescott well. Being with him like this so suddenly, she didn’t know what to say, so she just murmured, "I’ll get fat if I drink it this late."
Finn Prescott laughed. "You’re afraid of getting fat? Look at your face, it’s smaller than my palm. Your uncle really doesn’t know how to take care of someone. If you were with me, I’d fatten you up to 150 pounds."
Nina frowned. "A hundred and fifty pounds is too fat. I’d be shaped like a square."
Finn Prescott laughed. "As long as you’re healthy, who cares if you’re fat or not!"
With that, he took the milk tea from Nina, poked the straw in, and held it to her lips. "Take a sip. They said it’s a new flavor. You girls love this stuff."
Nina had no choice but to take it and sip a little. Her eyes brightened slightly, and she couldn’t resist taking another small sip.
It was matcha-flavored, sweet, with a rich, creamy taste. It was quite delicious. 𝐟𝚛𝕖𝚎𝕨𝗲𝐛𝚗𝐨𝐯𝐞𝕝.𝐜𝗼𝗺
Suddenly, Finn Prescott took the milk tea back and, using the same straw Nina had, took a sip himself. "Yeah, not bad. No wonder you all like it."
He then pushed the milk tea back to Nina.
Nina looked at the spot where his lips had touched the straw, her brow furrowing almost imperceptibly.
Finn Prescott’s sharp brows knitted together, and he asked, displeased, "What, you have a problem with me drinking from it?"
Nina frowned. "A little."
Finn Prescott ground his teeth. "I already drank from it, so what are you going to do? If you dare throw it away, I’ll throw you out of this car right now."
Nina didn’t look at him or say anything. She just pulled out the straw, peeled off the lid, and took another sip before saying, "It’s very fragrant. It’s really good. I’ve never had milk tea this good before. I won’t throw it away."
She looked so well-behaved, her voice soft. When she said the words "really good," her voice had a contented little tremor, as if she had never tasted anything so delicious in her life.
Finn Prescott reached out, wiped a drop of milk tea from her lip, and brought his finger to his own, sweeping his tongue over the tip. "Now it’s even more fragrant."
The tips of Nina’s ears turned red. She gripped the cup tightly and mumbled, "If you want to drink it, just take it. Why are you acting like this?"
Finn Prescott smiled and ruffled her hair. "Look at you, it’s like you’ve never had it before."
It was just... incredibly endearing.
Nina lowered her gaze and said softly, "I haven’t, really."
Finn Prescott said, "The Rhodes Family keeps you on too tight a leash, then. Is it because of your health?"
Nina shook her head, her grip on the milk tea tightening. Her voice was very quiet. "You bought so many snacks, and this milk tea... I don’t have the money to treat you back."
Finn Prescott froze for a second, then suddenly understood something.
He had done a little digging on Nina, but he couldn’t find anything. He could only confirm her existence, but her education records, what schools she attended—it was all a blank slate.
At the time, he’d assumed the Rhodes Family didn’t want to release information about their own and hadn’t thought much of it. He had just asked around a bit.
The information he got was that Nina Wynn wasn’t very popular in the Rhodes Family, and they didn’t really acknowledge her. Her aunt had been the other woman who successfully married into the family, and she had brought Nina along as baggage. It was only natural she wasn’t favored.
But he had thought that with a family as prominent and glamorous as the Rhodes Family, no matter how unfavored she was, she would at least never have to worry about basic necessities.
He never imagined that a simple cup of milk tea would be such a rare and delicious treat for Nina.
This thing only costs a few dollars. Were the Rhodes Family unwilling to even grant her that?
Comparing that to Crystal Rhodes, who was always decked out in top luxury brands, chauffeured in cars worth millions, and even had a private jet, Finn Prescott’s heart suddenly clenched with a pang of pain.
It was a faint, unfamiliar feeling, but he could tell that his heart ached for her.
He felt a pang for this soft, fragile girl, who bore the title of a child from a rich and powerful family but lived a life worse than an ordinary person’s.
He reached out, gently tucking a strand of her hair behind her ear, and asked in a low voice, "Does the Rhodes Family treat you poorly?"
Nina clutched the milk tea cup, her body trembling involuntarily before she shook her head. "No."
Although she said no, for someone like Finn Prescott, who was naturally skilled at reading people, such a small movement and change in expression did not escape his eyes.
Finn Prescott was silent for a moment, then said quietly, "But it seems like your uncle treats you well. That house of his... I hear he treasures it and usually doesn’t let anyone in. The fact that you can live there means he must care about you."
It would have been better not to mention Caleb Rhodes. At his name, Nina felt the gash in her heart widen. There was no wind in the car, and the heat was on full blast, yet she shivered as if she were freezing.
She kept her head down and asked in a small voice, "Can we go to the mountain to see the snow now?"
Finn Prescott glanced at her, then at the unopened bag of snacks, and an even denser ache spread through his heart.
This was a feeling he had never experienced before.
He didn’t know why, but every time he saw Nina, he found her pitiful. She truly made his heart ache.
He had never expected her life in the Rhodes Family to be so difficult.
He lifted the bag of snacks and placed it on her lap. "It was a small store, so this is all they had. Take these snacks and the hot water bottle. You’ll need them later."
With that, he started the car.
Neither of them spoke for the rest of the drive; both seemed to be lost in their own heavy thoughts.
When they reached the base of the mountain, Nina suddenly asked, "Are there villas with starlight roofs built on this mountain?"
Finn Prescott glanced at her and replied unhurriedly, "How did you know that? Those houses were just finished and haven’t officially gone on sale yet."
"But even when they do go on sale, you won’t be able to buy one. They’ve all been claimed by insiders. This is the most scenic area in Elysian City, and it’s still within the city limits. Ordinary people couldn’t get one even if they threw money at it. The people who can buy here all have some power. Just having money isn’t nearly enough."
"Especially the ones at the very top. People with only a little power don’t even qualify for a viewing."
After speaking, he rolled down the window and glanced at the snow outside.
It had been snowing for so long that a thick blanket already covered the ground, and the trees on both sides of the road had turned silvery white.
"The snow’s pretty heavy. It should be even thicker up top. You want to go up?"
Nina stared at the specks of light on the mountaintop, her hand unconsciously clenching into a fist. "Let’s go up. All the way to the top."
A mountain within the city limits naturally wouldn’t be too high. They reached the summit in just a few minutes.
Even though it was the middle of the night, the streetlights on the mountaintop were exceptionally bright.
The landscaping was excellent, with almost all native, mature trees. Even in the snowy weather, unidentifiable flowers were blooming in the gardens.
Several villas with classic, elegant architecture were scattered around the edges of the summit, exuding an understated luxury.
They were probably newly built, as the houses were uninhabited, except for the one on the far left, from which a bright light shone.
Nina got out of the car, took a few steps toward that villa, and pulled out her phone.
Before she could even dial, a familiar figure emerged from the doors of the second-floor balcony.
Even from such a distance, Nina could see him—dressed in a white shirt and black pants, looking clean and noble, as if he were glowing in the night.
