Chapter 21: The Abyss Devourer

The door swung open with a deep groan that echoed throughout the chamber. Mark entered first, followed closely by Ely, Yuki, and Aria.

The boss room was... enormous.

So large that Mark had to squint to make out the far end.

The ceiling disappeared into darkness, and the walls were covered in runes glowing with the same blood-red light he had seen on the door.

"Where’s the boss?" Aria asked, looking around in confusion.

The room was completely empty.

No monster. No throne.

Nothing but black stone and those glowing runes.

"This is strange," Ely murmured, her hand still resting on the hilt of her sword. "A boss chamber... with no boss."

"Maybe someone already killed it," Aria suggested. "Maybe other adventurers got here first and—"

"No," Yuki cut in, her eyes sweeping the room. "There’s definitely something here... I can feel it."

Mark felt it too — that presence of power he had sensed from outside the door. It was still there. Somewhere.

"Stay alert," Mark said, taking another step toward the center of the room.

"Master, maybe we should—" Aria started.

Plop.

Something fell in front of them.

A black drop, viscous and sticky.

All four of them froze, staring at the substance on the floor.

"What is that?" Aria whispered.

Mark slowly looked up.

And his blood ran cold.

"Damn."

Above them, clinging to the ceiling like a giant spider, was a mass.

A gelatinous, black, pulsating mass. It had dozens of eyes scattered across its surface, all looking downward, all focused on the group.

It had several mouths, opening and closing to reveal jagged, razor-sharp teeth.

And worst of all... it had weapons.

Swords, spears, axes, shields... all embedded in its gelatinous body, jutting out at odd angles.

Weapons that had clearly once belonged to adventurers.

[Difficulty: Rank SS]

[Warning: Extreme Danger]

And then the creature spoke.

Its voice was deep and resonant, as if a thousand voices were speaking at once.

"I AM A MONUMENT TO ALL YOUR SINS."

"Move!" Mark shouted.

The mass detached from the ceiling, dropping toward them like an avalanche of black gel.

The four scattered.

Mark rolled left, Ely leaped right, Yuki vanished into the shadows, and Aria stumbled, falling onto her back. The mass landed exactly where she had been a second before.

CRASH.

The impact shook the entire chamber, sending shockwaves that almost knocked Mark off his feet.

The mass rose slowly, its body reforming as the embedded weapons gleamed.

"THE RETURN OF DARKNESS IS INEVITABLE."

And then it attacked.

A tentacle of black gel shot toward Aria, who barely managed to roll out of the way.

"Get out of there, you idiot!" Ely shouted, running toward her.

"I’m fine! I’m fine!" Aria scrambled to her feet, her hands already glowing with magical energy. "Let me help!"

She raised her hands skyward.

"Reinforcement Spell: Strength Boost!"

A golden light wrapped around Ely and Yuki.

[Ely’s Strength increased by 50%]

[Yuki’s Agility increased by 50%]

Ely smiled as she felt the power surge through her body.

"Now we’re talking."

With the buff active, she launched forward, her sword blazing with sacred energy, and drove it straight into the center of the mass.

SLASH.

The blade cut through the gel like butter — but instead of blood, only more of that black, viscous substance poured out. The wound sealed itself almost instantly.

"YOUR EFFORTS ARE USELESS, FOR DEATH IS ALL THAT AWAITS YOU."

"Really?" Ely growled, jumping back to dodge another tentacle.

"It’s a slime," Yuki said, appearing beside Mark. "Normal physical attacks don’t work well against them. We need continuous strikes to stop it from regenerating."

"Got it!" Ely shouted, throwing herself back into the attack.

Three tentacles shot out at once — one toward Ely, one toward Yuki, one toward Aria.

Yuki vanished into the shadows, dodging it with ease.

Ely blocked with her sword, but the impact sent her sliding backward.

Aria wasn’t fast enough.

The tentacle hit her square in the chest, hurling her into the wall.

CRASH.

"Aria!" Mark stepped forward, but Yuki stopped him.

"She’s alright, Master. Look."

Aria slowly got to her feet, coughing, but uninjured.

"Ow... that hurt."

"THEY WILL FALL ONE BY ONE, JUST LIKE ALL THE OTHERS BEFORE THEM."

"Focus on buffs, not attacking!" Ely shouted, dodging another tentacle.

"Understood!"

Aria raised her hands again, this time focusing entirely on support.

"Reinforcement Spell: Speed Boost!"

"Reinforcement Spell: Defense Boost!"

"Reinforcement Spell: Magic Amplification!"

Buff after buff rained down on Ely and Yuki, pushing their abilities to absurd levels.

Yuki was now moving so fast she was practically invisible, her daggers slicing through the mass again and again.

Ely struck with such force that each impact made the entire chamber tremble.

And slowly, the Abyss Devourer began to weaken.

Its movements grew clumsy, its tentacles less precise, its roars more desperate.

"NO... THIS CAN’T... BE..."

Mark watched from a safe distance, feeling a little useless.

’Well, technically I’m a necromancer... I’m not supposed to fight directly.’

He looked at his hands, thinking about all the skills and items he had in the video game — massive damage spells, powerful summons, even a melee combat mode thanks to a partial class-switch mechanic.

’If I had the spells from the game, this would be so much easier... But I only have the new spells from this world. And most of them are passive or support-based. Basically, I’m a necromancer with no offensive magic.’

But then Mark remembered something.

The skill he had unlocked when he revived Aria.

[New Skill Unlocked: Shared Life Essence (Lv. 1)]

He hadn’t had time to look at it before, but now...

He opened the skill menu with a thought.

[Shared Life Essence (Lv. 1)]

[Description: All party members share a unified life pool. Damage is distributed evenly among all members. Additionally, statistics are equalized within the party, adjusting to match the highest stat in each category.]

[Current party members: Elyndra Ashford, Yuki, Aria Lightwood]

[Highest statistics: Elyndra Ashford]

[Effect: All party statistics will be adjusted to match Elyndra’s]

Mark blinked, stunned.

’Wait... what?’

He read the description again.

’Everyone shares the stats of the strongest member.’

A smile spread slowly across Mark’s face.

’I may not have offensive spells... but I have this.’

Mark activated the skill without a second thought.

"Shared Life Essence."

A brilliant green light enveloped all three women at once.

Yuki, who had been about to attack, stopped and stared at her hands in surprise.

Aria gasped as a wave of power surged through her body.

And Ely smiled.

"Master," she said, excitement in her voice, "what did you just do?"

"I leveled the playing field," Mark replied with a grin.

[Yuki’s statistics adjusted to match Elyndra’s]

[Aria’s statistics adjusted to match Elyndra’s]

[Party Synergy increased by 300%]

"WHAT...!? NO! THIS IS IMPOSSIBLE!"

Yuki disappeared again.

And when she reappeared, she was directly above the Abyss Devourer, her daggers blazing with dark energy.

"Shadow Strike: Annihilation."

SLASH SLASH SLASH SLASH SLASH.

A hundred cuts in a single second.

The mass writhed, trying to regenerate... but it wasn’t fast enough.

Ely leaped forward, her sword charged with her full power.

"Holy Strike!"

BOOM.

The impact was so powerful it cracked the floor beneath the Abyss Devourer.

And Aria, now carrying Ely’s stats, raised her hands with renewed confidence.

"Reinforcement Spell: Ultimate Amplification!"

A massive golden aura engulfed Ely and Yuki, multiplying their power even further.

"NOOOOOO!"

The monster screamed — and then it exploded, black gel splattering across the entire chamber, coating walls, floor, and ceiling.

And then... silence.
