Chapter 11: An even more disastrous second training session

Clang! Clang!

A sharp metallic clang echoes through the night, shattering the silence.

Chris and Mia face each other on the deserted baseball field, under Zaira’s annoyed gaze, wielding weapons of solid blood — a scythe for her, a katana for him.

Mia had explained that vampires can manipulate their own blood as naturally as they move their arms and legs.

It took Chris almost three hours to really understand it.

But once it clicked, it only needed a moment to push some of his blood out through the pores of his skin and shape it as he pleased.

But that loss of blood isn’t a problem — vampires regenerate it almost as fast as they lose it.

Chris makes another thrust, but Mia parries it with ease.

She is helping him get used to his weapon and learn how to use it, so she only defends against his still clumsy, poorly coordinated attacks without striking back.

And yet, Mia is certain he is holding back.

"Come on, Chris, even a kindergarten kid could land more dangerous blows than that! Can’t you do better?"

"I-It’s not that... I just wouldn’t want to accidentally hurt you, that’s all. Isabelle would be absolutely furious if you came home injured because of me!"

"Oh, so that’s it. Well, let me show you something."

Mia instantly drops her guard and swings her scythe at Chris’s calf, opening a deep wound.

A sharp cry of pain bursts from his mouth as he collapses to his knees, writhing in agony in a pool of his own blood.

"W-Why... did you do that?!" he cries in pain.

"Idiot, take a look at the wound."

Chris lowers his gaze to his calf, and...

"It’s incredible... the wound has almost completely healed already!"

"Have you already forgotten why Isabelle decided to turn you? Vampires can regenerate wounds that would be fatal for a human with ease."

"In other words... we’re immortal?! That’s awesome!"

"No, we’re not, idiot. First of all, regenerating a wound consumes Sanguis energy, and sooner or later it runs out. And we can’t regenerate severed body parts, so if you lose an arm there’s no way to grow it back. Nor can we regenerate the brain or the heart. Keep that in mind if you don’t want to end up dead against someone who knows our weak points."

"O-Okay. I’ll remember that."

"One last thing — the most important one. There are humans who possess a power extremely lethal to us, called Sacred Light. This power greatly slows our regeneration. Even a simple scratch inflicted by Sacred Light could take weeks to heal, let alone a serious wound. Isabelle herself avoids direct fights with them. So, for whatever reason, if you ever find yourself facing one of those humans — a Monster Slayer — run away."

Chris swallows nervously.

I didn’t know there were humans with magical abilities too. I’ll have to keep my eyes open and stay away from them if I don’t want to get killed.

Mia points her scythe at Chris.

"Now that you’re reassured, come on — let’s get back to training!"

"Alright!"

Chris grips his weapon and rushes straight at Mia.

He puts more strength and speed into his thrusts, but they remain harmless.

No matter how much power he pours into them, his inexperience with a sword keeps him from landing effective blows.

Zaira chuckles from the edge of the field and mocks him.

"Instead of training as a fighter, you should train as a fan — you’re moving plenty of air out here."

"That bitch is getting on my nerves — she’s unbearable!"

"Don’t let her provoke you, Chris. Instead, take it as part of the training. In a fight you need to keep a clear head and stay focused! And anyway she’s right. Stop swinging blindly like a madman — you’re only wasting energy! I know you’re not a swordsman, but damn... at least try to use your head!"

Use my head... okay, let’s try to come up with something!

Chris delivers another slash and Mia blocks it with the blade of her scythe, just like before. This time, however, he tries something different.

He suddenly lets go of the sword and lunges at her with a full-power punch.

The move catches Mia completely off guard.

Chris’s clenched fist darts straight toward her.

At that exact moment, her words echo in his mind: the heart and the brain are the only parts of the body a vampire cannot regenerate.

His punch is heading straight for her chest.

Shit... if I hit her right in the heart, I could really hurt her! I have to do something!

But it’s already too late — the momentum of his charge won’t let him pull the punch back.

Of course... if I hit her with my open palm instead of my knuckles, I’ll cause less damage! Yes, that’s it. 𝒻𝓇𝑒𝘦𝘸𝑒𝒷𝓃ℴ𝑣𝘦𝑙.𝒸ℴ𝘮

Chris barely has time to open his fist before his hand slams into her chest.

Mia remains stunned.

The scythe slips from her fingers and her body starts trembling from head to toe, her eyes wide.

But it isn’t the power of Chris’s blow that shocks her.

Chris stands frozen in front of her, his arm extended and his fingers closed around Mia’s breast.

"C-Chris..." Mia growls, her eyes blazing.

"S-Sorry, Mia — it was an accident! I didn’t do it on purpose."

Yet his hand doesn’t move.

It’s as if it has a will of its own, with no intention of letting go of his girlfriend’s big, soft breast.

"Y-YOU DAMN PERVERT, TAKE YOUR HANDS OFF MY MIA!"

Zaira’s furious scream erupts from the edge of the field as she hurls a sphere of purple energy that Chris barely dodges by a hair.

Mia says nothing. She stands there, motionless.

She brings her hands to her chest, to the spot where Chris touched her. Her heart races, and an unfamiliar shiver runs through her body for a moment.

Meanwhile, chaos breaks out all around her.

"Stand still, damn maniac! I swear I’ll reduce you to ashes!"

Zaira keeps launching energy attacks left and right, while Chris runs from her in reckless panic.
