Chapter 78: Pay-To-Win

Aaron sat on a chair, sipping on a can of soft drink while watching Nancy stand in the middle of an arena.

Her sunglasses were gone, her ash-grey eyes focused.

In her right hand, she clasped a one handed sword, appearing slightly curved and single-edged like a talwar.

In the other, she was holding onto a wooden shield that was provided by the training room workers.

And talking about the room, it appeared like a small arena with a field in the center, covered by tall walls on 3 sides and one side was carved into stair-like seating.

Aaron did some research on his phone about the gimmick, and learnt that many private arena fights were also hosted in such rooms, which explained the pokemon gym like construction design.

But that wasn’t the main attraction of the place, as one wall was fitted with a smaller door, and the opposite wall had a huge door.

Out of the huge door, a small, 4 feet tall goblin was being dragged by a burly, muscled woman.

She appeared to be nearly 40 years old, dark hair and a stern look on her face. Dressed in a heavy, metallic armour, she didn’t seem to be worried about the unarmed, flimsy goblin.

The goblin’s hands and legs were both tied with plastic tape roughly covering its face to make him unable to bite.

Luckily, he was still dressed with the loincloth, sparing the audience from the disgusting things that the cloth hid.

He was struggling against the grasp, but powerless to actually affect the woman as she pulled out a pocket knife and sliced off the ropes around his legs and arms.

Then she simply tossed him onto the concrete arena floor and walked backwards through the giant door.

The goblin snarled in a muffled shriek, glaring at the retreating woman with hate before settling his big, greedy eyes onto his foe, Nancy.

Nancy took a deep breath to calm herself, her eyes narrowing as she began a stare off against the level 10 goblin.

And then, she did something that caused Aaron to freeze and blink in surprise.

She pulled out her wallet.

Taking out a couple 500 sol notes, she waved them in her left hand, mumbling the name of her spell as the magic happened.

With his increased sensitivity to mana, he watched as mana gathered into the notes in her hand, disintegrating the paper right in front of his eyes into bright beads of energy.

It appeared silver and orange, making Nancy look even more majestic.

To add onto the charm, her cold gaze and the aesthetics of her natural hair went really well along with the silver mana.

The mana traveled through her left hand in an instant, wrapping over her right arm and the sword.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, before opening them calmly and staring at the opposing goblin.

He was still struggling, scratching his own face to get the tape off his mouth and by the time he felt the energy in Nancy’s sword... It was already too late.

Nancy swung, not even caring that she was a couple meters far from the goblin and a silver-ish mana blade travelled through the air, slicing the goblin’s neck in a disgusting eruption of green blood.

The glow around her sword was no more, not that it was needed anyway, as Nancy calmly stored her sword back into her inventory and looked at Aaron with a big smile.

Aaron could only stare back in silence, feeling too shocked and speechless about the whole ’fight’.

He only had a single thought, terming this situation as ’Pay-to-win at the finest.’

Which was honestly true, as Nancy’s skill allowed her to convert actual money into mana.

The more she invested, the stronger her skill would be.

Of course, her level and stats still played a huge role in her strength, but in actuality, she can indeed cover for those if she was willing to invest enough.

She wasn’t interested in fights anyway, and the skill was mostly for her own protection rather than a necessity.

Grinning at Aaron’s speechless expression, she walked up the stairs, "How would you rate it then, Mr Cross?"

"10/10." Aaron chuckled dryly, "Nothing beats money, I guess."

Nancy pouted, "Money is a superpower too."

"Indeed." Aaron got off the seat, making an exaggerative, gentlemanly gesture for Nancy to sit instead.

He then offered her his half finished can of soda, smiling, "Let’s see how I do then."

"Best of luck~" Nancy blew him a kiss before taking the can and intentionally sipping it from the side that Aaron was before.

He laughed at her sexy antics, moving down the stairs.

The smaller door was pushed open and a handsomely dressed young man walked into the arena along with a female coworker.

At first the man was excited to greet Aaron, but when he saw that he was also a fellow man, he stepped back and let his coworker do the talking.

’Well, good for me.’ Aaron thought mildly, feeling a bit irritated about the fact that if Nancy was in his place, that man wouldn’t have hesitated to lick her boots.

But so was life.

"Good evening sir, your foe is getting transported here. By the time, would you like any weapon, shield or armour to assist you in the battle?" the lady asked politely, smiling at Aaron.

After a brief thought, Aaron rejected the offer as they might charge Nancy for it and he wasn’t in the need of any extras anyway.

And respecting his choice, the two workers swiftly left the arena, leaving Aaron to wait in peace until the huge door rattled open.

Once again, it was the same middle aged woman that came in, this time holding ropes in her hands and dragging a green skinned, tall goblin behind herself.

His legs were tied, hands cuffed and mouth wrapped with tape.

Yet, he looked menacing.

When the ties were released and the woman retreated, the hobgoblin stood up to his feet.

He looked mediocrely buff, having slight muscle in the arms and legs, along with a beer belly that bumped out of his stomach.

His skin was even greener than the normal goblins, and instead of a mere loincloth, he was dressed in a leather, animal skin skirt.

With one arm, he ripped off the tape on his face, growling at Aaron menacingly.

"Uaghhhh!"
