My Magical Girl System-Chapter 16: Gold Team
The perimeter assembly point was a roped-off section near the gate’s edge, where a harried coordinator with a clipboard was barking instructions at a motley collection of D and C-rank heroes. Andrey led Sarah and Lisa into the crowd, finding a spot near the front where they could hear.
"Listen up!" the coordinator shouted over the gate’s constant rumbling. "You’re all assigned to perimeter sweep teams. Your job is simple: anything that comes out of that gate that isn’t wearing a hero insignia, you kill it. Do not—I repeat, do NOT—chase anything into the gate. The inner ring is for A and S-ranks only. You try to be a hero, you’ll be a corpse. Understood?"
A chorus of acknowledgments rose from the crowd.
The coordinator continued, pointing to different colored armbands. "Red teams, left flank. Blue teams, right flank. Green teams, you’re on rearguard—make sure nothing circles behind us. Gold teams, you’re rapid response. If a breach happens anywhere, you plug it." He glanced at his list. "I need a Team Gold-7. Thompson, Chen, Sadine—that’s you three. Report to Sector Gold staging, station seven. Move!"
Andrey grabbed two armbands from a nearby table—gold, with "7" stenciled on them—and handed one each to Sarah and Lisa. They fastened them on and jogged toward the Sector Gold area, a cluster of tents and supply crates near the gate’s right edge.
The gate loomed above them now, easily fifty meters tall, its edges crackling with unstable purple energy. Every few seconds, a shudder ran through the ground as something massive moved within.
Sarah swallowed hard. "Okay... that’s intimidating."
Lisa nodded, her usual cheerfulness subdued. "Yeah. But we’ve got this, right?"
Andrey checked his baton, then mentally reviewed his new Absorb Damage skill. "We’ve handled worse. Stay together, follow the plan."
A tall, scarred C-rank hero in Gold-7 armband waved them over. He had a weathered face and the look of someone who’d survived more gates than he could count. "You three the D-ranks? Good. I’m Marcus, squad lead for this rotation. We’re on rapid response—means if a wave breaks through somewhere, we’re first in. Stay close, watch my signals, and don’t do anything stupid." He eyed them appraisingly. "Hope vouched for you, so I’ll assume you’re not completely useless. Let’s move."
They fell in behind Marcus, joining a dozen other Gold-team heroes positioned at intervals along the perimeter. The gate rumbled again, deeper this time, and a crackling sound echoed from within.
"Here we go," Marcus muttered, hand on his axe. "First wave inbound."
The gate’s surface rippled like a diseased heartbeat before splitting open with a deafening crack. What emerged wasn’t just monsters—it was a living flood. Twisted bodies scrambled over each other, claws scraping against concrete, red eyes gleaming with hunger. Their screeches merged into a single, discordant shriek that made Lisa cover her ears. The wave surged forward, an endless tide of scales and teeth, spreading across the battlefield like an infection consuming healthy flesh.
"Gold teams, intercept!" a voice crackled over the comms.
Marcus pointed. "Gold-7, on me! That cluster to the right—cut them off before they reach the supply tents!"
Andrey sprinted after him, Sarah and Lisa close behind. The creatures were faster than they looked, but the team reached the gap first. Marcus swung his massive axe in a wide arc, cleaving through three in one blow. Other Gold heroes joined in, spells and blades flashing.
"Sarah, AoE clear on the left flank! Lisa, barriers to protect the tent line!" Andrey barked, already engaging two creatures with his baton.
Sarah transformed mid-stride, pink sparkles flaring. "Heartstorm Volley!" A wave of pink hearts swept through a cluster of creatures, shredding them into mana dust.
Lisa raised her wand, mint-green barriers snapping into place around the nearest supply tent just as a creature lunged at it. The barrier held, the beast rebounding with a snarl. "Mint Barrier secured!"
Andrey spun between two creatures, his baton a blur. One fell, then the other. A third lunged from behind—he activated Absorb Damage instinctively, the creature’s claws striking him but the energy siphoning into a glowing reservoir in his chest. He spun and released it in a shockwave, the stored damage blasting the attacker and two more into oblivion.
Marcus paused mid-swing, eyebrows raised. "Not bad, brother. Keep it up!"
The wave lasted fifteen minutes before the flow of monsters slowed. The Gold teams held their positions, bodies of fallen creatures dissolving into mana particles around them. Andrey panted, checking his team. Sarah’s dress was singed but she was unharmed. Lisa’s barriers had held, though she looked exhausted.

"Wave cleared," Marcus announced over comms. "Good work, Gold-7. Regroup, rearm—next wave in twenty."
They fell back to their station, gulping water and checking gear. Sarah de-transformed with a sigh. "That was insane. There were so many."
Lisa slumped against a crate. "My mana’s almost empty. I need a few minutes."
Andrey nodded, pulling out a small mana potion from his belt and handing it to her. "Drink this. We’ll need you for the next wave."
Lisa accepted gratefully, downing half. "Thanks. You saved us with that counterattack thing—what was that?"
"New skill. Absorb Damage. Seems useful."
Sarah grinned tiredly. "Useful? You turned into a human bomb. That was awesome."
Marcus walked over, wiping his axe. "You three did solid work. Hope was right about you." He glanced toward the gate, where another rumble was building. "Get ready. Second wave’s coming faster than expected."
Sarah, who had just been catching her breath after the first wave, looked up at Marcus with wide eyes. "Eh? But wasn’t it supposed to be twenty minutes? I’m still catching my breath here..."
Before Marcus could respond, a sharp voice cut through from behind them.
"Heh. If you’re already complaining this much, you’re not going to last long."
They turned to see a young man with slicked-back blonde hair and expensive-looking custom armor, gleaming with obvious enchantments. A B-rank insignia gleamed on his chest. Beside him stood a larger man with brown hair and a scarred face, also B-rank, carrying a massive tower shield.
The brown-haired man crossed his arms, eyeing them with a hint of pity. "They look new. Probably not even part of a guild yet. Makes sense they’d be struggling."
The blonde one snorted, looking down his nose at Sarah. "I don’t want to have to protect dead weight out here. If you can’t keep up, do everyone a favor and retreat now while you still can."
Sarah’s eye twitched. Her grip on her wand tightened, and her transformation flickered back on involuntarily, pink sparkles flaring around her. "You’ve got some nerve talking like that! We might be new, but we’re better than you!"
The blonde raised an eyebrow, a mocking smile playing on his lips. "Oh? Better than us? Based on what? Surviving one wave of cannon fodder? Please."
Before Sarah could lunge forward, Andrey stepped between them, placing a calm hand on her shoulder. His voice was low and steady, the same tone he used when diffusing office conflicts. "Sarah. Calm down."
She whirled on him, face red. "But Andrey—!"
"Focus on the quest," he said firmly, meeting her eyes. "Don’t engage them."
Lisa quickly moved to Sarah’s other side, gently tugging her arm. "He’s right, Sarah. Don’t pick a fight—it’s not worth it. We’re here to gain experience, not prove anything to random jerks."
Sarah’s jaw worked, frustration clear on her face, but she finally let out a sharp breath and deactivated her transformation. "Fine. Whatever."
The blonde laughed softly, exchanging an amused glance with his partner. "Smart choice. Stay in your lane, newbies. Leave the real fighting to professionals." They turned and walked away, still chuckling.
Marcus, who had watched the exchange with a neutral expression, finally spoke. "Ignore them. The Gold rank’s full of egos. You did fine in that wave—better than some C-ranks I’ve seen. Now focus up. Second wave’s in ten."
Andrey nodded. "Understood."
Sarah crossed her arms, still fuming but quiet. Lisa patted her shoulder sympathetically.
The gate rumbled again, deeper this time, and purple lightning arced across its surface.
Ten minutes passed in tense silence. Heroes checked gear, gulped potions, and stared at the churning vortex. The second wave hit exactly on schedule—but it was different from the first.
Instead of a flood of small creatures, the gate disgorged a dozen larger monsters, each the size of a small truck. They moved in formation, their hides thick with armored scales, horns gleaming with malicious intent.
"Contact! Multiple C-rank brutes!" the comms crackled. "Gold teams, intercept!"
Marcus pointed his axe toward the advancing line. "Gold-7, on me! Focus fire on one at a time—don’t let them surround us!"
Sarah transformed instantly, pink light flaring. "Heartstorm Barrage!" Her upgraded skill sent a volley of tracking pink hearts at the nearest brute, each one exploding against its hide. The creature roared but kept coming.
Lisa raised her wand, double barriers snapping into place. "Reinforced Barrier—protect the flank!"
Andrey moved forward, baton extended. The brute swung a massive claw—he activated Absorb Damage, taking the hit and storing the energy. His chest glowed as he released it in a shockwave, staggering the beast.
"Now! Chain your attacks!" Andrey shouted.
Sarah followed up with another barrage. Lisa’s Starlight Burst peppered its legs. Marcus’s axe cleaved into its neck. The brute dissolved with a final roar.
They moved to the next, then the next. It was slower than the first wave—each brute required coordination and sustained assault. But Gold-7 held, rotating targets and covering each other.
By the time the last brute fell, the team was exhausted. Sarah dropped to one knee, her dress tattered. Lisa leaned on her wand, gasping. Andrey’s arms ached, his new skill pushed to its limit.
Marcus wiped sweat from his brow, nodding at them. "Good work. Really good work. You three held your own."

Andrey helped Sarah up, offering her a potion. "Drink. We might have another wave."
Sarah accepted, still panting. "Those jerks better be eating their words..."
Lisa managed a weak smile. "We showed them, right? Even without a guild."
Before anyone could respond, the comms exploded with urgent static.
"All units! Emergency! Multiple S-rank signatures detected inside the gate! The inner team is engaging something massive—perimeter teams, prepare for possible breakthrough! I repeat, prepare for breakthrough!"
The gate convulsed violently, its surface rippling like a stormy sea. Deep within, something roared—a sound so primal and powerful that it shook the ground beneath their feet.
Marcus’s face went pale. "Everyone, defensive positions! NOW!"
The sky turned purple as the gate bulged outward, and through its surface, they could see shadows moving—enormous shapes, larger than buildings, clashing with tiny specks of light that had to be the S-rank heroes.
Sarah stared, her exhaustion forgotten. "What... what is that?"
Andrey gripped his baton tighter, mind racing. "Whatever it is, we’re about to find out. Brace yourselves."
The gate split open, and chaos descended.
