Chapter 211: Chapter 211: Haven’t Had Meat in Five Years

They said it was a moving house dinner, but actually, it was just a few people gathering for a simple homemade meal.

The dishes were bought by Professor Young, who also cooked them with her sisters.

Renee Winslow wasn’t good at cooking, especially meals for eight or nine people, which she couldn’t handle at all.

Originally, Renee planned to eat out, but Professor Young insisted that cooking at home for a move signifies prosperous days ahead.

After the meal, Sylvia Carrington, Evan Fenton, and others left first, while Professor Young and her two sisters stayed to help Renee clean up.

Renee told Professor Young to leave, but she insisted on staying to help.

When everyone had gone and the child had washed up and fallen asleep, Renee sat alone on the living room sofa, feeling inexplicably empty inside.

It was like the desolation after harvesting in late autumn, cold and carrying a sense of bleak solitude.

Renee forcibly suppressed this emptiness and tranquility inside her, got up to make herself a cup of honey grapefruit tea, and sat back on the sofa.

She drank half a cup of the honey grapefruit tea, adjusted her mood, picked up her phone, opened her chat window with Aiden Grant, and hesitated over the input bar, typing words that she ultimately didn’t send before exiting the interface.

She wanted to ask Aiden why he bought a house next to Jack Yates’.

But actually, there was no need to ask such a question; it was surely under Jack Yates’ instruction. Without his directive, Aiden couldn’t have taken such an action on his own.

What’s more, if Jack didn’t want it himself, even if Aiden made such a decision arbitrarily, Jack wouldn’t have moved there.

No one in this world could force Jack Yates, except Jack himself, like how he forced her.

During those three years with him, Renee had been forced so many times, too many to count.

For Renee, those three years were like a tsunami devouring her, or a sharp, knife-like whirlwind.

She was cut all over by the blade-like wind and engulfed by the tsunami, nearly suffocating.

Five years ago, she left Jack, paying the price in blood, and these past five years, she had never thought of returning to him.

She always wanted to forget that part of her past, or let time heal the scars from those three years, bravely moving forward to embrace sunny days.

As for Jack Yates, there was no chance of intersection between them, nor did she want any.

-

Next door.

Jack Yates looked at the photos of Renee on his phone, all taken during the three years they were together, including her selfies and pictures he took for her.

He took more of her photos, mostly with backgrounds from their outings, with a few at Thatcher Manor and The Winslow Estate.

Eighteen, nineteen, twenty years old.

The photos documented her growth and their bits and pieces together.

He thought three years would be enough for Renee to fall in love with him, enough for them to last long-term.

Yet unexpectedly, three years turned out to be their end.

Jack put down his phone, lit a cigarette, and leaned back on the sofa with his head tilted.

In the hazy smoke, Jack seemed to see Renee charmingly smiling at him, making his heart feel both soft and itchy.

As the smoke dissipated, Renee’s face disappeared, leaving Jack feeling suddenly empty, so empty it scared him.

-

Renee didn’t sleep well that night, consistently dreaming.

First, she dreamed of her old home in Vintara, as if she was in high school, in a very hot and stuffy summer, doing test papers in the classroom while others ran around noisily.

The scene shifted to Mount Verdian in Vintara at dusk, where Jack pressured her from behind to recite poems, adding another round every time she got it wrong.

It added up to eight times, and Renee cried and refused to recite anymore or let him touch her.

Jack was very gentle, holding her on his lap and patiently coaxing her.

Afterward, he carried her down the mountain in the moonlight, singing as he walked.

Then, it turned to Northcity, in the snow-filled winter, where she was making snowmen at Thatcher Manor, and Jack squatted beside her, watching her with gentle eyes.

Later, she tried to escape but was captured by people Jack sent, locked in the basement with her hands and feet bound, and he came to the basement every night to stay the whole night.

In the end, she was injured, holding her wounded abdomen, blood covering her hands while the sunset seemed stained with blood from the sky.

Awakening from the dream, Renee buried her face in her legs, taking a long time to calm down.

During the five years away from Jack, except for the first year, she often dreamed of him, but later, it rarely happened.

Especially in the fourth year, she did not dream of Jack even once throughout the whole year.

But now, she dreamed of him again, both good and bad.

After getting up and washing, Renee woke up Noah.

The child stood on a stool by himself to wash his face and brush his teeth while Renee tidied the bed in the bedroom.

After tidying up, Renee took his hand and left the house, only to encounter Jack at the elevator.

Renee pretended not to see, keeping her eyes fixed on the elevator doors.

Noah, however, smiled and greeted, "Good morning, Uncle."

As he spoke, he even waved his little hand.

Jack bent down, leaned towards Noah, and replied softly with a smile, "Good morning, Noah."

His long hand reached out to gently tousle Noah’s little head.

The elevator arrived, and the doors opened.

Renee led Noah inside, with Jack following behind.

Jack’s car was parked in the basement, and he pressed the button for the negative first floor.

Renee pressed the button for the first floor to exit through the main entrance.

Standing beside Noah, Jack asked with a smile as they reached the third floor, "Would you like Uncle to drive you?"

Noah didn’t immediately agree but looked up at Renee and softly asked, "Mom, can we ride in Uncle’s car?"

Renee didn’t even glance at Jack and explained with a smile, "Mom has already called a car, and it will arrive soon."

Cloudrest is three kilometers away from Noah’s current kindergarten, but since this semester has already started for two months, Renee didn’t plan on transferring him mid-year. She intended to change to a nearby kindergarten next semester, so for now, she had to ride-share every morning to take Noah to school. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

Noah softly said, "Okay."

Although he agreed, the little guy clearly wasn’t too happy.

Renee couldn’t vent her anger on the child; she could only glare at Jack in frustration.

Jack cleared his throat lightly, "How about this, I’ll drive you every day, and charge you the market rate, just pretend you’re hiring my car."

Renee: "..."

Jack continued, "You have to hire a car anyway, does it matter who the driver is?"

Renee’s mouth twitched, "Mr. Yates, you truly are a businessman, even using your spare time to earn some car fare. Kudos to the growing wealth."

Jack pretended not to catch her sarcasm, raised his brow slightly, and sighed, "Well, it’s kind of out of necessity, poor company operations leading to loss, so I have to drive to earn some livelihood, or else I’d starve."

Renee knew he was talking nonsense and ignored him.

Jack moved closer to her and said, "May I earn some livelihood?"

Before Renee could speak, Noah tugged on her hand, "Mom, please agree. Uncle Yates is so pitiful that he almost doesn’t have anything to eat anymore."

Jack meaningfully added, "Indeed, I’ve gone a long time without eating meat, five years."

Renee: "..."

Noah felt even sorrier for Jack, shaking Renee’s hand more emphatically.

"Mom, please agree." The little guy turned to look at Jack, inviting him, "Uncle, why don’t you come to our house tonight? I’ll ask Mom to cook meat for you."

Jack smiled, "Alright." He smiled while patting Noah’s little head, looking at Renee, "Is that okay?"
