Chapter 1382: Chapter 1381: Quick Hits

Flicking the blood off of my blade, I let out a sigh of relief as I noticed that this wave of enemies was wiped out completely, this moment of freedom allowing me to stretch and tend to the wound on my left forearm that had come from a singular second of me not paying attention.

I had been too enamored looking at the flames that had wreathed my mate to notice that the mantis monster had gotten right up on me quicker than I had expected, and as such it was able to swing its serrated scythe of an arm down at me and score a deep gash with ease.

It wasn’t even like the monsters were that strong or sneaky... I was just dealing with a lapse in awareness that came from me appreciating how utterly ravishing my mate was with this new version of herself.

No one could ever convince me that seeing this bronze skinned, arrogant and muscled woman bathed in gorgeous crimson flames - and knowing that all of that beauty you were seeing was all yours - would not distract them.

I just refused to believe that, and even more so considering the mantis monsters were rather trivial compared to everything else that we were used to fighting in these Trials; they just ran at us and swung their scythe arms at us in hopes of slicing us into pieces while only having a few of them that seemed to know what magic was.

So a moment of ’weakness’ caused me to get a wound on my forearm that healed rather quickly, but that moment was all Anput needed to come over and smirk at me like we had made some kind of bet or something.

"How’d you get injured, love~? Did you get distracted by something, perhaps~? Or is your edge getting dulled~? Too arrogant... maybe conceited~?"

That teasing tone made me raise a brow at her as I contemplated what I should do in response, though immediately she just reached for my head and ruffled my ears as she murmured "Good thing they weren’t venomous or a little stronger... you might’ve lost that arm of yours...", showing a little concern before planting a kiss on my forehead.

It was that softness that made me drop the annoyance I was about to express to her, especially since the way she said it and how she gently pat my shoulder before turning to make sure we were still safe was just...

"Speaking of, these monsters are surprisingly competent for such basic creations, aren’t they? Is this really a challenging Trial?"

"Eh, they were numbering in the hundreds so maybe its quantity over quality. Besides, it is just a duo Trial, and the reward for this is a special kind of bone enhancing powder for Caninekin, so... who knows really."

"And that too; why is it a powder meant for just Caninekin and nobody else? Bones are bones, aren’t they? I haven’t ever really seen a difference between them..."

My mate just shrugged before pulling me back towards the hill we had turned into a fortress, helping me up through the sea of bodies and getting us to where we needed to be before the next wave arrived.

Sitting in the middle was another of those braziers that let us know we had another three waves left before completion, and since the last seven had been roughly the same just with different numbers, I wasn’t expecting much else.

"Not really gonna complain about something that’s this easy. Besides, the carapace on these bugs is nice, and those arms are strong. I guarantee I could make some crazy unique set of armor and weapons from this as a showpiece or something..."

That sparkle in her eye was intoxicating, and since we had nothing to do besides wait I asked her about it, getting the Jackalkin to spill some more details about her enhancements and how it had affected her abilities as a blacksmith.

"This feels too damn good~! Mom, you really should look for another of these arrays!"

Pushing the corpse of a rather heavy elephant monster away from our position, I decided to use the giant body as a barricade of sorts against whatever might come next, wedging it between the trees and giving us some more ideas to work with.

"I do hope we find something similar, both for you Chordeva and for myself. I have to admit I am curious about it now..."

We had gone out to complete the Trial that had more strict requirements, specifically targeting those that only a few of us could complete; Anput and Kat went to a Caninekin one while Mom, Lilith and I arrived here, at the one for Demons.

"Mhm... If we did find one I would probably still keep it for your sisters. I’ve already reached this point on my own, might as well push forwards like this as well. Besides, what changed besides the obvious?"

"I feel stronger, faster, more fluid and I can definitely say my senses are more honed. My magic in particular is... it’s just better all around, and I just feel... better. I don’t really know the specifics, but everything about me is just... yeah." freeweɓnøvel~com

"Weren’t you supposed to be smart or something?"

I rolled my eyes at her and retrieved my blade from one of the other corpses in our clearing, cleaning the blade and preparing for the next group of enemies that would come to find us; we hadn’t even left the area we had been dropped into since there were so many monsters and people that were coming to us, so we decided to just wait for them.

"It’s hard to describe, really. I can tell you there is definitely something different about me internally, but I have no idea what it actually is. I feel it, but I don’t know what it is, what it does... everything else I do know though, and it feels great."

That caught Lilith’s attention immediately, and seeing the older Demoness’ eyes light up in that way was rather ’terrifying’, particularly since she got so close and began to demand I go over every little detail that I could so that we might find out what it was.
