Chapter 25: Operation Watermelon

The next morning, "ugh," Dennis woke up in his bed. He turned to see that Daisy wasn’t next to him and immediately sat up, but then he remembered what Daisy number three had said last night while they were being intimate.

"Love, I’m leaving early tomorrow, okay? I have a student council task to buy something at the market," Daisy number three had said, moaning with pleasure.

"Alright, I’ll see you at school," Dennis said, out of breath.

"Thanks, love. I love you, ah," Daisy number three replied.

Back in the morning as Dennis woke up, he noticed an egg sandwich on the table covered in plastic wrap and a handwritten note that read, "here is your breakfast, I’m heading out first, oh please bring my bag and katana."

"Hmm... that’s right, she’s going early today. Oh well," Dennis muttered, picking up his plate and peeling off the plastic.

After eating, showering, and getting dressed, Dennis immediately left his apartment to walk to school, carrying two bags and a katana at his waist. As he passed through the gates and walked inside, Dennis looked left and right, searching for Daisy, who might have arrived already. But when he realized that the market behind the school was quite a distance away, he let out a sigh, knowing there was no way Daisy would get there before him.

"Usually I’m fine being alone... but it feels different this time without Daisy," Dennis said to himself with a smile.

Suddenly, "thud," "oomph," Dennis, confused because he felt something crash into him, stopped and turned to look back. It turned out Mario and Franky had fallen to the ground behind him and were being helped up by their respective wives. When Dennis turned around and reached out his hand to help, Mario slapped it away; his face looked annoyed, angry, but also terrified. Franky’s expression was more or less the same. Dennis immediately understood—they were being threatened by Charlie, his classmate who was supposed to be just a nerd.

"Hey, you guys don’t need to be afraid of Charlie. He’s nothing," Dennis said.

"Ha... you don’t know him, do you? He’s a gangster’s kid. Now he’s definitely coming for us. Why didn’t you just die?" Mario said.

"Ba... baby?" Viola asked.

"So... sorry, senior, please forgive us," Fiona added.

"If anything happens to my wife, I’m coming for you, you hear me?" Franky shouted while pulling Fiona close.

"Sigh... fine, let me talk to Charlie. You two stay out of it. Just trust me. Now, I’m going inside," Dennis said.

Without waiting for a reply, Dennis turned and walked away, leaving Mario holding Viola and Franky holding Fiona. After entering the school building, Dennis walked straight toward his classroom. His mind was racing, trying to figure out how to talk to Charlie; after hearing who Charlie really was, he knew he had to be careful about how he delivered his message. When he entered the classroom, he saw Charlie had already arrived, sitting in the third seat of the second row from the wall that divided the two windows.

Dennis put his and Daisy’s bags at his seat and walked over to Charlie, who was sitting in front of him.

"Charlie, can we talk?" Dennis greeted.

Charlie turned around, his eyes filled with a deep-seated grudge as he glared at Dennis, as if Dennis had stolen something from him that caused a massive loss. But before Charlie could even open his mouth, suddenly, "splat," a yellow beam of light struck Charlie’s temple from the side. His blood immediately sprayed onto everyone around him, including Dennis, Jason, Kimberly, and even Bella and Rika, who were gathered at Bella’s desk right to his right.

"Thud," Charlie collapsed onto his desk, his head still turned, completely lifeless. Jason, who had a clear view because he sat in the same row as Charlie, stood up instantly; he turned toward the wall, his face suddenly turning pale as if he were seeing something beyond all logic. Seeing Jason’s reaction, Dennis looked in the same direction and saw a hole, still smoking, right between the windows and just a bit above where Charlie had been sitting.

"A sniper... that’s definitely a sniper’s work. I know because I’m a sniper too, but it’s incredible to hit a target hidden behind a wall. I’m impressed," Jason said.

"Hey... this is no time to be impressed, right? Come on, call a teacher! You too, Dennis... don’t just stand there staring," Kimberly shouted, pulling Jason out and turning to look at Dennis.

But Dennis didn’t follow Jason, Kimberly, or the rest of the students running out. Instead, he walked slowly toward Charlie, whose eyes were still open as he lay on the desk. Then he looked toward the window and the wall between them, examining the hole. A faint light peeked through the hole, indicating the shot had pierced the wall and hit Charlie’s temple squarely, killing him instantly.

"This... it’s impossible, unless the sniper is truly legendary... or a cheater... besides, that tall building in front of the school is just an old hotel about to be demolished... could this be the work of..."

"Kyaaaa... what is going on?"

Before Dennis could finish his thought, he heard a scream behind him, and of course, he knew exactly whose voice that was. He turned around and his eyes widened at the sight of Daisy number three with her hair in a ponytail, carrying a round watermelon wrapped in a mesh net, looking stunned by what had happened. Then, Daisy number three ran toward Dennis, put down her watermelon, and immediately wiped Dennis’s cheek, which had been splashed with Charlie’s blood as he was walking toward him.

"Are you okay, love?" Daisy number three asked with a worried face, cleaning the blood off of Dennis’s face.

"I’m... I’m fine... where were you?" Dennis asked, hesitant and full of suspicion.

"The market... here is the proof, I bought a watermelon. I mean... I wanted to get back at him by dropping a watermelon on his head... but... he’s dead... shot? What happened?" Daisy number three asked, looking truly bewildered.

Dennis went dead silent, studying Daisy number three’s face, which looked truly bewildered. If he calculated the distance from the hotel to the school and from the school to the market, it was impossible for Daisy to have done it; her arrival time in front of him made no sense if she had been at the hotel. Naturally, Dennis was confused beyond belief, but he tried his hardest not to show it in front of Daisy.

He kept ruminating on the possibilities of how Daisy—if she really was the culprit—could have pulled it off. In the end, Dennis, standing there frozen in thought, felt exhausted; he turned and walked toward his own desk, grabbed both his and Daisy’s bags, and then pulled Daisy out of the room.

Not long after, teachers and police began to arrive. They headed straight into the classroom while all the students waited in the hallway. While standing in the corridor with Daisy by his side still carrying her watermelon, Dennis stole a glance at Daisy number three.

"It’s just not possible, she must have really gone to the market to buy that watermelon... Charlie was a gangster’s kid, maybe his dad’s enemies were targeting him... and the shooter was a total pro... that could be it, right... yeah, that’s probably it, don’t go suspecting your own wife... no way a wife this beautiful is the culprit... whatever... don’t think about it," Dennis muttered to himself while glancing at Daisy number three, who stood casually beside him.

After the police stepped out of the classroom having finished their initial inspection, and as more officers began to arrive, the students were dismissed to go home early so as not to interfere with the investigation. Witnesses like Dennis, Jason, Kimberly, Bella, Rika, and several others were asked to wait to give their statements one by one.

While waiting in the hallway right in front of the classroom—which the police had converted into an interrogation room—Dennis kept glancing at Daisy number three. He intentionally gripped her hand, desperately trying to push away the suspicion in his gut.

Meanwhile, the Daisy sitting beside Dennis was the picture of calm, hugging her watermelon. But inside the Council of Daisies room, Daisies number one, two, four, five, six, and seven were seated in their respective chairs. On the table before them, an interface screen displayed the scene outside. Suddenly, a voice echoed through the air around them.

"Operation Watermelon was a success. Our husband doesn’t suspect us because we have an alibi and evidence, and the target has been neutralized. Mission accomplished," Daisy number three’s voice boomed through the room.

"Good job, number three," replied Daisies number one, two, four, five, six, and seven as they all gave a thumbs-up.

"Wait... but our husband is still watching you. Don’t let him start getting suspicious," number one warned.

"Copy that. Sorry, heading back out now. Over," number three replied.
