Chapter 46: Investigation for Prevent Future Problems

The two of them woke up after a deep two-hour nap on the sofa. Dennis turned on the television to watch a documentary about hunters exploring the outskirts of the city—a place that looked pitch black, lit only by the starlight in the sky and the flashlights carried by the hunter team. Meanwhile, Daisy sat beside him, reading something on her smartphone screen while occasionally glancing at the TV. Suddenly, "ding," a notification popped up on both Dennis and Daisy’s phones. Dennis grabbed his smartphone from the coffee table and opened it. There was a message in their group chat from Gary:

"Hey... what the hell is this?"

Below it was a photo of an event that looked like a gala or a fancy luncheon in a lavish ballroom. Standing among the gathered crowd was Bella, seen with the man who had picked her up earlier. But what truly baffled Dennis and Daisy was that this time, Bella was wearing a luxurious, expensive-looking red gown. She looked incredibly beautiful, like a high-class lady, with her hand linked through the arm of the man whose own hand was wrapped around her waist. Dennis and Daisy turned to look at each other, but before they could speak, "ding," another message arrived, this time from Olivia.

"Gary and I are currently in the ballroom of his father’s office building for the Mitch and Co. annual gala. Bella is here... and she is definitely not with her husband," Olivia said in the message.

"Wait, her outfit is different from the one we saw earlier. Wow... she really is crazy. Jason and I actually pulled over to the side of the road just to look at this photo," Kimberly replied to the message.

"Oh really? Tell me everything," Olivia messaged back.

After that, the group chat was mostly Olivia gossiping with Kimberly, with Daisy jumping in occasionally. Dennis, who was too lazy to keep reading, set his phone down, but suddenly "ding... ding... ding," several messages hit Daisy’s phone. She immediately slid over until she was pressed against Dennis and showed him her screen.

It turned out to be an email from an unknown number showing a series of photos featuring Bella and the man. After some digging, his name was revealed as Silas Richmond, a young entrepreneur who owned real estate marketing and logistics companies. The photos showed them leaving a fancy restaurant, entering a hotel, sitting together in bathrobes inside a hotel room, and finally heading out to the gala in the same clothes Gary had shown in the group chat.

Along with that were receipts for the restaurant, the hotel, and Bella’s clothes—all charged to Silas’s corporate credit card under the labels "client lunch" and "business partner entertainment." Dennis turned to look at Daisy, who was staring back at him while adjusting her glasses.

"Where did you get all this?" Dennis asked.

"These are from Number Two’s subordinates. This is all the result of their investigation. Right now, they’re infiltrating Silas’s two offices to find receipts and company ledgers to figure out exactly how long Bella has been involved with Silas and to dig deeper into who this Silas guy really is—at least, that’s what Number Two says," Daisy answered.

"Wow... they can do that? Even though they’re bats?" Dennis asked, confused.

"They are lesser vampires who can transform into humans, and of course, they are Number Two’s loyal subjects," Daisy Number One replied casually.

"Hmm... I see. I don’t understand your work at all," Dennis said.

"Don’t worry, honey. My goal, and the goal of the others, is to protect us so we don’t get dragged into anything messy. You know how cunning Bella is, and you clearly remember what she said about you back then," Daisy said.

"Yeah, I’m not thinking about that at all. To me, the Bella I thought I knew is dead," Dennis said in a relaxed, indifferent tone.

"I know. That’s why I don’t want any trouble with her. Number Two is documenting everything as our weapon if any problems involve us... especially since Bella’s husband was just here, right? So, if Bella tries anything funny by claiming we’re connected to her actions, we can prove that we aren’t involved," Daisy said.

Dennis glanced at his wife, who was still looking at her smartphone screen and holding her glasses as she read. He studied Daisy’s face, trying to figure out if she was doing this out of the grudge and bitterness she felt toward Bella—considering she had been bullied by Bella in the previous dimension and had every motive to want to destroy her—or if it was truly just to protect herself and Dennis. Finally, he asked her straight out,

"You aren’t planning to do something petty just because you want to get back at Bella, are you?" Dennis asked bluntly.

"Why would you think that? I have no intention of doing that, I swear on my life," Daisy answered calmly.

"I believe you. Sorry for asking," Dennis replied, though he continued to watch his wife closely. It was crystal clear that Daisy had no memory of her life in the other dimension—the one before she was killed alongside him when that plane crashed into their school.

Finally, Dennis just stayed quiet and put his arm around his wife, who seemed busy looking at her smartphone screen and sending messages to join in the gossip with her two female friends in the group. He read the chat, but he was also thinking in his head,

"Sami, she isn’t doing this because she remembers her past, is she?" Dennis asked, still curious inside his head.

[Part of her drive does indeed come from her past, which she isn’t aware of, but she has no memory of ever being in that dimension. So, I believe what she said about just wanting to be on guard in case trouble comes from Bella is true and honest.]

"Thank God for that. I don’t want her to still have attachments to her past like I do. Life has changed; even though this world is on the brink of the apocalypse, at least it’s still better than that peaceful world filled with nothing but selfish people who don’t hesitate to be cruel for their own interests," Dennis muttered in his head.

[Yes, master, don’t worry. If anything strange happens, I will certainly let you know.]

"Alright, I get it. Thanks, Sami. I know I can count on you," Dennis replied in his head.

[Thank you, master. I will not let you down.]

Then Daisy showed him her group chat. It was obvious that Olivia, who was bored at the gala, was completely obsessed with gossiping about Bella. She seemed to be tracking Bella’s every move, even sending several more photos of her behavior to the group. Kimberly, who appeared to be on the road helping her husband with work, responded enthusiastically, even egging Olivia on to provide play-by-play updates.

Naturally, Daisy—still tucked in Dennis’s arms—joined in with just as much excitement. Her expression looked delighted to see Bella doing something that would clearly lead to her downfall; it was as if her face was saying, "You’re dead. I’ve got all the cards now. If you try anything, all of this is going straight to social media, hahaha."

Dennis only shook his head, but he didn’t say anything, letting Daisy vent what she didn’t even realize she was feeling in the group chat, while Olivia and Kimberly were there to egg her on. Suddenly, "ding-dong," their apartment doorbell rang. Daisy turned to look at Dennis.

"Did you order something?" Daisy asked. 𝘧𝑟𝑒𝑒𝘸𝘦𝘣𝑛𝑜𝘷𝑒𝓁.𝘤𝘰𝓂

"No. Did you order food or something?" Dennis asked Daisy.

"Not at all. Who could it be? We aren’t expecting anyone, are we?" Daisy asked.

"Let me see," Dennis replied.

Dennis stood up and walked toward the door. He peeked through the peephole and was shocked to see Akira and Rika standing there. Dennis opened the door but stood in the way, blocking the entrance.

"Is there something I can help you with?" Dennis asked, his tone sharp and indifferent.

"Sorry to bother you. I just wanted to ask—did Brad come by here earlier?" Akira asked casually.

"Hmm... he showed up right as my wife and I got home, but he left immediately after asking about Bella," Dennis answered.

"Well, that’s the problem. It looks like we need to talk, Dennis," Rika said.

Seeing the look of anxiety on Akira and Rika’s faces, Dennis began to feel that something was wrong. He glanced back at Daisy, who was still sitting on the sofa watching him, then turned back to Akira and Rika.

"Fine. Five minutes. Say what you have to say, right here. My wife is resting," Dennis told Akira and Rika as he stepped outside and closed the door behind him, because it was clear he didn’t want to involve Daisy in whatever the two people in front of him were about to say.

Akira and Rika glanced at each other, then turned their gaze back to Dennis. Both remained silent, simply staring at Dennis, who stood waiting for them to speak with a flat expression, his arms folded across his chest and a look of total indifference.
