Chapter 54: Match Debrief

After Dennis stood up with Daisy, everything suddenly went dark and they were back in the gymnasium. Dennis could see all the glass panels on the mezzanine circling the building still displaying the final footage of the simulated fight. Ivan, Sasha, and Brad—who had been killed—immediately approached the rest of the group still standing on the south side. Ivan walked straight up to Dennis and grabbed him by his shirt.

"What the hell is wrong with you? Didn’t you hear the alarm signaling the end of the exercise? Why did you kill me and Sasha? If you still want to fight, come on, I’ll take you on until you’ve had your fill," Ivan said, his face twisted with rage.

"Exactly. Don’t just do whatever you want. I’m not letting this go," Sasha added, standing beside Ivan.

"Sorry. I lost consciousness back there," Dennis said quietly.

"Hey... enough, already. The match was a draw, there’s no need to make a big deal out of it," Gary said, stepping in to mediate.

"Please forgive Dennis... he lost consciousness. He even attacked me... and I’m his wife," Daisy said, trying to persuade Ivan and Sasha.

Ivan studied Dennis’s face, which looked flat and showed no sign of hostility. Then Ivan glanced over at Gary, who was holding his arm, and Daisy, who stood right by Dennis. Ivan took a deep breath and exhaled, then released his grip on Dennis’s shirt and stepped back.

"Alright, fine, I get it. But please, don’t let it happen again," Ivan said.

"Yeah, sorry," Dennis replied, looking down.

"One more time, and I’m going to consider you my enemy for real," Sasha added, pointing right in Dennis’s face.

"Okay... okay... sorry," Dennis replied, raising his hands in surrender.

A moment later, Akira, Jason, and Olivia approached everyone on the south side. Kimberly immediately ran to Jason’s side, and Olivia ran to Gary’s. They waited for the footage on the mezzanine to finish, while Brad looked disheveled and stayed silent, even as Hyunjin and Minji babbled right in his face. While they waited, suddenly, "vwooong," an interface appeared in front of Dennis’s face, and he immediately read it.

"Wow... I actually got exp?" Dennis asked in his head.

[Correct, Master. You killed one Rank B crawler inside the simulation.]

"How do I still get exp inside a simulation? I’ve been curious about that since the last training session," Dennis asked curiously.

[Fighting a crawler in a simulation or the real world is the same; our system still calculates the exp points.]

"Hmm, so that’s how it works," Dennis muttered in his head.

[Correct, Master. From now on, you don’t need to worry about using blood lust, because you now possess a passive skill to control it for five minutes.]

"Hmm... that means within five minutes, I have to be able to defeat the enemy," Dennis muttered in his head.

[Yes, that is the strategy, Master.]

"Alright, I get it. Thanks, Sami," Dennis replied.

[You are very welcome, Master. I am happy to be of help.]

After that, Dennis looked back at his friends and Daisy, who were now talking casually with Ivan’s team while exchanging strategies. Not long after, the screens on the mezzanine glass circling the gymnasium disappeared. Dennis could see the faces of the students, who looked stunned as they peered down at the gym floor. But Dennis could clearly see a sense of fear on their faces; they remained silent, with no one speaking or even whispering among themselves.

Then they heard footsteps approaching, echoing throughout the gymnasium. Steve and Vanessa walked toward them; Steve’s face looked tense, while Vanessa looked slightly... disappointed? Seeing the two of them approach, Ivan and his team immediately lined up, as did Gary, Olivia, Dennis, Daisy, Jason, and Kimberly, who stood beside Ivan’s team. Steve stood in front of everyone with Vanessa behind him, holding her tablet. Steve looked at the faces of his students one by one, then he let out a sigh.

"Okay, the exercise is over. You all were great, I’ll admit that, but there are a few points I need to address with you," Steve said firmly.

"Yes, sir," Ivan, Sasha, Brad, Hyunjin, Minji, Akira, Gary, Olivia, Dennis, Daisy, Jason, and Kimberly replied in unison.

"First... in terms of power, of course, the new core team won by a landslide. But what is being graded in this exercise isn’t just power. There is strategy, teamwork, and personal decision-making. Please, Ms. Vanessa," Steve said, turning to look at Vanessa.

"Alright. For our evaluation this time: in power, the new core team wins. In strategy, the old core team wins. In teamwork, the old core team wins. And personality... it’s balanced. I don’t know what personal issues you have with one another, but there are some among you whose emotions influenced your personal judgment, creating a situation that disadvantaged the others," Vanessa said, glancing at Dennis and Brad.

The atmosphere turned silent. The two teams glanced at each other, then Gary raised his hand.

"Excuse me, ma’am, but why did we lose in teamwork?" Gary asked.

"Because you split up. As you know, in the darkness out there, there are no smartphone or radio signals that can be used for communication because everything is disrupted by the dark. Splitting up is the last thing a hunter team should do in a real-world condition. In terms of strategy... honestly, he was reckless to pull a crawler alone when it could have been avoided, bringing the crawler to the enemy base and fighting them alone. If you were out there, you would be a victim, not a hunter, because you were too reckless," Vanessa said bluntly while staring at Dennis.

"S-sorry, ma’am," Dennis replied, stammering and looking down.

"We gave you three hours to go back and forth, but you used all that time for the fight against the crawler... that is why time ran out before you could take the flag," Vanessa said.

Ivan, Sasha, Hyunjin, Minji, and Akira turned to look at Dennis, shaking their heads as if disappointed.

"But we can tolerate it this time. You’re all still young and have just become hunters, so you don’t yet understand what the field is like out there—especially since you knew this was just a simulation where the dead would live again. In terms of experience, the senior team is clearly more seasoned because they’ve practiced so often. Them staying at the base to wait out the clock was a good decision. Originally, I imagined the result would be both teams defending their bases until the end, avoiding a fight altogether," Steve said with a smile.

"Wait, if that’s the case, what was the point of this exercise?" Olivia asked.

"To observe your judgment of a situation—that was the goal this time. The reason things went south is because you were all so intent on fighting. I don’t understand what issues exist between you, but you are all hunters, and hunters do not fight one another. Do you understand?" Steve answered.

"So... does that mean... both teams lost?" Ivan asked.

"Yes. The reason is that you all let your feelings and emotions drive your decision-making. The south team panicked when the crawler approached and your concentration broke, while the north team just did whatever they wanted, making individual decisions without discussing or studying the situation. So, yes... both teams lost," Steve replied.

Ivan, Sasha, Brad, Hyunjin, Minji, Akira, Gary, Olivia, Dennis, Daisy, Jason, and Kimberly immediately fell into a dead silence because they felt disappointed in themselves. Meanwhile, Steve shook his head in front of them, but he smiled and looked at his students once more.

"Hey, don’t feel discouraged. You gave the spectators up there a hell of a show, so I consider this exercise a success. And I’ll admit it—you are all strong," Steve said, smiling as he clapped his hands once.

"Thank you, sir," everyone replied bitterly.

Then Vanessa returned to giving personal evaluations for both teams. The bottom three were Brad, Dennis, and Daisy based on the assessment; the reason being that all three acted alone and endangered their respective teammates. Brad was considered unfocused and unhelpful when Ivan and the others were attacked by the crawler.

instead, he attacked Dennis as if he had a personal vendetta against him. Meanwhile, Dennis was ranked second from the bottom for recklessly pulling the crawler and going on a rampage. Daisy was the third from the bottom because she wandered off on her own without any regard for her team members.

Dennis and Daisy immediately looked dejected and apologized to Gary, Olivia, Jason, and Kimberly, who didn’t seem to mind. Meanwhile, Ivan, Sasha, Hyunjin, Minji, and Akira turned to look at Brad. Brad turned his head the other way, avoiding his friends’ eyes with an annoyed expression. They felt they could have wiped out the crawlers easily if Brad had helped them, but instead, he had fought Dennis like a man possessed and got himself killed.

After that, Steve asked both teams to shake hands and tell each other "good job." The two teams immediately faced off and took turns shaking hands one by one. When Brad stood in front of Dennis, he chose to skip him entirely and went straight to shake Daisy’s hand, which made Dennis a bit irritated, though he kept it under control. Meanwhile, Ivan and the others shook his hand, treating him as an equal and showing him respect even though their expressions remained flat. Dennis glanced at Brad,

"Huh... I guess he doesn’t want to admit he lost to me. Whatever," Dennis thinking in his head, trying to shake off his annoyance.
