Chapter 89: Next Day Suffering

The next morning, "ugh," Dennis opened his eyes. He woke up on the sofa, his head spinning and his entire body feeling so sore and weak that he was too lazy to even get up.

"Ouch... so weak... so this is what they call a hangover," Dennis muttered to himself.

Dennis closed his eyes again; his head felt like his brain was pounding against his skull like a cop slamming on a door during a raid.

"Damn... my head is so heavy... I shouldn’t have drank last night... but in a situation like that, there was no way out of it since everyone else was drinking... ugh... my head," Dennis muttered in his heart.

Suddenly, a racket erupted in Dennis’s head, making his headache even worse than before.

"Honey... where are you? I... my head hurts so much," Daisy number one shouted.

"Love... love... did you leave?" Daisy number three asked.

"My husband... my husband," Daisy number two cried out.

"Oh... where are you, sugar... ugh... my head," added Daisy number four.

"Hon... my head... I feel like an idiot... hon... where are you," Daisy number five yelled.

"Zzzz... zzzz," Daisy number six could be heard snoring loudly, apparently still asleep.

"Uuh... my head... help me, dear... you didn’t leave us, did you?" Daisy number seven asked.

Dennis’s headache intensified as he heard his wife’s various voices talking over each other simultaneously inside his head.

"Give me a break," Dennis muttered irritably to himself.

Gathering all his strength and willpower, Dennis tried to get up and stand, though he immediately flopped back down, feeling weak. He tried again and managed to stumble toward the bedroom. With great effort, he opened the door and saw Daisy already sitting on the bed, her legs tucked under the blanket, clutching her head with both hands. Her eyes were out of focus, her face was pale, and her hair was a mess; naturally, Dennis knew he wasn’t the only one dealing with a hangover after last night’s binge.

Dennis stepped into the room and closed the door. He walked slowly, then sat on the edge of the bed and touched Daisy’s leg, prompting her to look at him. Daisy crawled forward weakly and hugged Dennis.

"My head... it hurts so much, my body is weak... my legs are sore," Daisy said.

"Yep... that’s the effect of drinking last night," Dennis replied, hugging his wife and smiling as he stroked her hair to straighten it out.

"Uuh... I never want to drink again," Daisy muttered as she crawled onto Dennis’s lap.

Then, both of them went quiet, not saying a word and just holding each other because their heads were still spinning. Suddenly, "ding," both Dennis and Daisy’s smartphones on the nightstand received a notification. They both looked over, but neither had the energy to move and grab them.

"Let’s... let’s skip today," Daisy suggested.

"Yep... I was planning on that too... even though Mr. Steve asked us to come in last night," Dennis said.

"No way... I can’t do it, I’m too weak. I’ll deal with Mr. Steve later; my body feels absolutely terrible," Daisy said, clinging to Dennis.

"Yeah, I get it, I feel terrible too. Want to eat? I’ll cook something in the kitchen, you just stay in bed, okay?" Dennis said.

"Later. Just stay here. Why weren’t you in bed this morning... where did you sleep? Your side is still made," Daisy said.

"I fell asleep on the couch last night, sorry," Dennis replied.

"It’s okay... I was just scared when I woke up and you weren’t there. Maybe because I’m in this state, I wasn’t thinking and just panicked, haha," Daisy replied casually.

"It wasn’t just you who panicked; everyone inside you panicked, too," Dennis replied, pointing to and tapping his own head.

"Yep... that’s true, haha," Daisy replied.

"Alright then, let’s go back to sleep; my body is still all sore," Dennis replied.

Finally, both of them got back into bed and pulled the covers over themselves as they lay down. They faced each other, holding one another, and closed their eyes again—completely ignoring the flood of notifications pouring into their smartphones.

A few hours later, Dennis opened his eyes; it was already afternoon. He saw Daisy still asleep on top of him. Then he looked at the digital clock on the nightstand, which showed it was already 12:00 PM. Dennis felt much better than before, but he didn’t move because he didn’t want to wake the sleeping Daisy.

His hand reached for the nightstand and grabbed his smartphone. He looked at the screen and unlocked it; as it turned out, there were about 36 notifications from his team’s group chat. He opened it and scrolled through the chat history from Gary, Olivia, Jason, and Kimberly. It turned out they were all going through the same thing as Dennis and Daisy, and none of them had made it to school either.

Gary explained that he had messaged Steve, letting him know that he and the others wouldn’t be coming in because they were feeling under the weather after reading the group chat; he even sent a screenshot of the chat history filled with complaints of exhaustion from Olivia, Jason, Kimberly, and himself.

Naturally, Steve gave them the green light; he understood young people, especially since they had gone pretty wild last night for their first time drinking alcohol. Gary displayed the screenshot of his chat history with Steve, and there were no more messages after that.

"Good thing Mr. Steve understands... give me a break, I’m never doing that again," Dennis muttered to himself.

Besides his own team’s group chat, Dennis also checked the combined chat history of the senior and junior teams. It turned out none of them had shown up to school either. Ivan and Sasha took the day off, claiming they were exhausted; Brad skipped because he was looking after Elisa, who was hungover.

Hyunjin and Minji also used the excuse that they were tired from yesterday’s match and needed rest; and then there was Akira, who didn’t come in because he was hungover and even asked for permission on behalf of Rika, who was still passed out next to him.

"Turns out everyone is in the same boat, haha," Dennis muttered, smiling to himself.

"Ding." Then, a notification chimed from Daisy’s smartphone. He reached out once more, picked up Daisy’s phone, and unlocked it. It turned out the notifications flooding her phone were far more numerous than the ones on his own. Eighty-seven unopened notifications—thirty-six from the team and senior-junior groups, while the rest were from a group chat between Daisy, Olivia, Kimberly, and the six core members from Willow. Dennis opened it and saw Rachel chatting with Olivia and Kimberly.

According to Rachel in the chat, Brigitte, Sofia, Margaret, Harumi, and Natasha had all failed to show up at school because they couldn’t get out of bed; only Rachel herself made it to school because, as a dhampir, she wasn’t affected by alcohol. She also mentioned that Kamala was throwing a fit, saying that educated and honorable young ladies shouldn’t get drunk like they did last night. Of course, Rachel turned it into a joke, discussing it with Olivia and Kimberly, who were playing along.

Dennis placed Daisy’s smartphone back on the bed and hugged his wife as she slept on top of him, observing her beautiful face while she rested and stroking her hair with a smile. Then, he remembered his dream from last night, and his expression immediately turned serious. It was clear from his face that he was actually curious about who his real parents were and wanted to say a few words to them to express how he felt. He also seemed to want to ask his mom and dad about this, since they had never discussed the matter with him at all.

"Once Ruby City is close to Emerald City again, I’m going to ask Mom and Dad about this... even though this doesn’t really change anything for me and they’re still my parents, I’m still curious," Dennis muttered in his heart while stroking Daisy’s head on his chest.

"Uh,"

Dennis tilted his head slightly to look down. Daisy began to stir and shift until she was lying face down on his chest. Then, Daisy lifted her head and looked at Dennis’s face right in front of her.

"Are you awake, honey?" Dennis asked.

"I am... good morning, honey," Daisy answered with a smile.

"It’s already noon... the morning’s gone, haha," Dennis replied, stroking his wife’s head.

"Oh, really... I guess we slept for a long time then... but I feel better now... refreshed... even if it’s not a hundred percent," Daisy said with a smile, resting her head back on Dennis’s chest and looking at her smartphone on the bed.

"Yep, my body’s feeling better too. Sorry I opened your smartphone; it’s just that a message came in earlier," Dennis said.

"It’s fine, who sent it?" Daisy asked.

"Your group chat with the Willow girls," Dennis answered.

"Oh... just leave it for now. Want to shower together? I feel like our skin is all sticky," Daisy asked, looking up again.

"In a bit. It feels too good just lying here," Dennis replied.

"Okay," Daisy countered. Then, Daisy crawled closer to Dennis’s face and they immediately shared a heated kiss. Of course, with the mood being just right and a lingering spark from the night before, the kissing quickly led to other things—even as their smartphones continued to chime with notifications from their various group chats.
