Chapter 94: Dramatic Night For Them

Meanwhile, in Jason and Kimberly’s apartment, Dennis sat at the dining table directly across from Jason and Kimberly. His hand reached for a third slice of pizza, and he ate it with his head hanging low. The atmosphere was dead silent because Dennis didn’t say a word, his face a complete wreck even as he kept chewing and biting into his pizza. Jason and Kimberly just stared at him, stunned and speechless, while holding their own slices of pizza with the tips sagging downward. Then, Kimberly slid her chair closer to Jason and whispered.

"What is actually going on with him? He looks like a complete wreck," Kimberly whispered.

"A guy with a face like that only has one cause; he definitely got into a fight with Daisy," Jason whispered back.

"Oh... so that’s it. I thought they never fought. They’ve been married over a year and are still so lovey-dovey, not like us," Kimberly whispered.

"Wait... do we actually fight that often?" Jason whispered, confused as he turned to look at his wife.

"Of course not, but they are clearly more affectionate than us, right?" Kimberly answered in a whisper while glancing at Dennis across the table.

"Hey, give me some credit, we’re affectionate too... but you’re right, they seem way more into each other than us, to the point it feels unnatural, like a movie," Jason whispered back.

Then both of them went back to staring at Dennis while eating their own slices of pizza; it was crystal clear from their faces that they were dying of curiosity and itching to ask what had actually happened. The silence grew so thick you could cut it with a knife, yet it wasn’t exactly tense. Finally, Jason stood up and walked to the refrigerator in the kitchen. He opened the fridge and grabbed three cans of soda, then brought them back to the table. He slid one of the cans toward Dennis.

"Thanks, bro," Dennis said, his voice brief and low.

"Yup, take it easy, dude," Jason replied shortly, fighting with everything he had to keep himself from asking questions.

Kimberly studied Dennis’s cheek, even squinting her eyes for a better look; she saw that his cheek was flushed red, looking as though he had been slapped by someone. Unable to control her curiosity any longer, she finally asked.

"What happened to your cheek, Den?" Kimberly asked, keeping it casual and brief.

"Oh... this? Daisy smacked me," Dennis answered while touching his cheek.

Kimberly opened her mouth to follow up, but she felt a sharp vibe beside her. She turned to see Jason glaring at her with a face that seemed to say "don’t meddle in other people’s business; we’re here to help him calm down, not interrogate him." Ultimately, Kimberly abandoned her plan to ask more.

Suddenly, "ding," Kimberly’s smartphone went off. She immediately grabbed it from her lap under the table and checked the screen. There was a notification for an incoming message, and as she opened it, Kimberly’s eyes went wide. She stood up abruptly, making Jason turn to look at her.

"What is it? Who sent a message?" Jason asked.

"Something... I’ll tell you later, I have to go out for a second," Kimberly answered, pushing her chair back and running toward the front door.

"Hey!" Jason shouted, standing up.

"Blam." Too late. Kimberly had already gone out, shutting the door so hard that a photo frame on the wall next to the door tilted and shook. Dennis, who had turned to watch Kimberly leave, looked back at a confused Jason, then returned his gaze to the table, which seemed more interesting than anything else at the moment.

"Sorry bro, your wife had to go out. I should probably head back. Thanks for the pizza," Dennis muttered.

"Huh... what are you talking about, dude? Just stay here and calm down. My wife probably just went out to grab a misdelivered package, and the message was from the driver who left it downstairs. Just relax," Jason said.

"If you say so... okay, bro," Dennis replied.

"If you want to talk, I’m listening... maybe it’s better if you tell me what’s up just to get it off your chest," Jason suggested.

"Nah... I’m good," Dennis said, even though his face said he was anything but fine.

"Okay. Anyway, Kim and I finally decided to buy a new motorcycle later. We’re selling the old one and using the cash from that, plus the money Sean owed—he finally finished paying it off in monthly installments," Jason said, changing the subject because he understood.

"Oh... that’s good then," Dennis replied.

"Now, how about we play some games on my PS6," Jason suggested, standing up.

"Okay," Dennis replied briefly while finishing the slice in his hand.

Without another word, the two of them walked to the living room, carrying a pizza box and their respective drinks. They started playing whatever games were on Jason’s PS6 together, without discussing the trouble Dennis was going through at all.

Meanwhile, "ting," the elevator opened and Kimberly stepped out into the lobby. She immediately looked left and right, searching for someone, until she spotted Daisy sitting on a lobby sofa clutching her smartphone. She rushed over to Daisy and was shocked to see her looking like a wreck; her hair was a mess and her eyes were puffy and red as if she had just finished crying.

"What’s wrong, Daisy?" Kimberly asked, crouching in front of Daisy and resting a hand on her leg.

"Is Dennis at your place?" Daisy asked.

"Yeah... he’s eating at my place. What happened?" Kimberly asked, finally letting out the curiosity she’d been holding onto.

"I slapped him," Daisy answered, looking down while squeezing her smartphone tightly.

Kimberly, seeing her friend in such a mess, immediately leaned forward and hugged Daisy, who hugged her back. Then, she released the hug and sat next to Daisy while holding her hand.

"Why did you slap him?" Kimberly asked slowly.

"I... found out something about him," Daisy answered, looking down. "We aren’t lying, are we, even though we actually knew beforehand," Daisy Number Seven said inside Daisy’s head. "Shut up, this is all because of you, our husband got the wrong idea and run," Daisy Number Two through Six replied in unison, pointing at Daisy Number Seven’s face in the council room.

Kimberly went silent for a moment, simply squeezing Daisy’s hand and staring at the side of her face, which was partially hidden by her hair.

"Sorry if I’m overstepping... but... did he cheat?" Kimberly asked.

"Huh... it’s not that. He would never cheat," Daisy answered firmly, turning to look at Kimberly.

"I see, so why on earth did you slap him?" Kimberly asked, her curiosity growing even more.

"I’m the one who messed up. He was just telling me something and I got emotional... then I slapped him. Now, can you take me to your place?" Daisy asked, answering Kimberly’s question.

"Are you sure? If you want to calm down first, I’ll stay here with you. Besides, why did you ask me to come down?" Kimberly asked.

"Because... I forgot which apartment unit is yours... I’ve been going up and down from floor to floor, searching for your place," Daisy answered slowly.

"Oh my god, you know where I live. This just means you’re really spiraling. If you want to stay here for a bit, I’m with you," Kimberly said.

"My head is pounding. I rarely fight with him, especially since this is all my fault," Daisy muttered. "Hey... everyone shut up. My head hurts, don’t speak," Daisy shouted inside the council room. "Sorry, Number One," Daisy Number Two through Seven replied in unison, and then it immediately went silent.

"Yeah, I get it, it’s better if you just calm down for a second, okay? Just breathe. Once you’re calm, then we’ll go up," Kimberly replied, putting her arm around Daisy and looking closely at her face.

"No, I want to go get my husband and bring him home. Come on, Kim, go with me," Daisy said, shaking her head as her tears began to fall again.

"Yeah... yeah, I get it, but if Dennis sees you like this, it won’t be good, right? So just calm down for a second, okay," Kimberly said, hugging Daisy again.

"Alright, thanks, Kim," Daisy replied, holding onto Kimberly’s arm as it wrapped around her neck.

Finally, the two of them went silent. Kimberly kept her arms around Daisy, although inside the council room, things were far from quiet.

"I’m sorry. I thought if he was slapped, our husband would snap out of it. I’m so sorry," Daisy Number Seven said, bowing her head in apology.

"Next time, please use your head. Don’t just act on impulse. We’ve all seen our husband’s memories and we know who he really is thanks to our father-in-law. Instead of slapping him, you should have just been honest, you get that?" Number Six shouted.

"Exactly. What did I tell you? Now our husband has the completely wrong idea. Just think for a second—if someone suddenly remembers that their biological father was a criminal and a murderer, how do you think they’d feel? Think!" Number Four yelled.

"You’d better learn from this mistake. Not everyone is like you, someone who doesn’t care about human feelings other than love. You’re basically an angel mixed with a grim reaper—pathetic," Number Five added, crossing her arms over her chest.

"If this mess leads to our husband asking for a divorce because he feels guilty—since his biological father is the man who killed our older sister and almost killed us—you’re going to take full responsibility," Number Two screamed.

"Do you actually regret this and learn from this mistake or not?" Number Three asked.

"Yes... I regret it and I’ve learned my lesson. This won’t happen again in the future," Number Seven answered with her head down.

"Shut uuuup... my head is pounding, don’t you guys get it? Do you want me to erase you all, huh?" the voice of Number One screamed, echoing throughout the council room.

"Sorry... Number One. We’ll be quiet," Daisy Number Two through Number Seven replied in unison.
