This forced the World Tree to abandon its roots and consequently stop nourishing that dimension while also ceasing to nourish some areas of Asgard's dimension. After all, the World Tree couldn't just cut a piece of it, so when it abandoned a root, it was forced to abandon the entire trunk connected to those dimensions.
