Chapter 91

The day was Friday. Normally, the Aspirants would have been scheduled for their rigorous training today, but luckily for them, the authorities had decided to grant a temporary reprieve. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

The primary reason for this sudden hiatus was the traumatic incident they had encountered within the Tier One gate at the hands of the Aberrant.

Additionally, the administration had chosen to use this day to honor the lives of the Aspirants who were lost within the rift.

Unfortunately, their remains could not be retrieved from the beast world; hence, the officials simply declared a break in their memory.

This meant that training would not resume in full swing until Monday.

After finishing their breakfast, the boys decided to split up for their own individual reasons.

Van informed them that he would be heading to a specialized tech room to work on some personal projects.

Kai, on the other hand, simply wanted to laze around, so he retreated to the dorm to catch up on rest.

Ray, however, decided to head for the library.

His hands were tucked deep into his pockets as he walked at a measured pace, pointedly avoiding the other Aspirants.

Not that any of them seemed particularly eager to chat with him anyway.

In no time, he reached the massive library and stepped inside.

He was immediately met with towering rows upon rows of books neatly organized on polished shelves.

Without hesitation, he strolled toward the fantasy section and began scanning the spines, eventually picking out a few specific volumes.

After selecting what he needed, he claimed a table that was currently free, ensuring he was alone.

After tapping the noise-cancellation button on the desk’s surface, he settled in to get down to his reading.

’Now I can mumble all I want without being overheard.’

Placing the stack of books on the table, he examined them one by one.

Today, he wasn’t interested in learning about world geography or the history of the Aberrants; he wanted to uncover the truth behind his own bloodlines.

He had come here specifically to read more about werewolves and celestials.

Unfortunately, he hadn’t been able to spot any factual references in the historical sections, which had led him straight to the fantasy aisle.

There, he found a plethora of novel-like books centered around werewolves.

However, he still couldn’t find a single book regarding the celestials... yet.

Flip—!

He opened one of the books and began skimming through the pages.

A few minutes into the text, his cheeks began heating up as the descriptions became increasingly... graphic.

’Ah, fuck. This isn’t what I want to know at all!’ he screamed inwardly as he swiftly closed the book with a loud, sharp snap.

His heart raced as he stared at the innocent-looking book cover.

For some reason, his mind kept flashing back to the scandalous passages he had just glimpsed, causing his face to redden even further.

’... I wonder how big it would actually be in that form. Ah, shut up, Ray! Stop those thoughts right now!’ He scolded himself mentally while slapping his cheeks rapidly to regain his focus.

Pushing the romance-heavy book aside, he grabbed another one from his pile.

<Ancient Tales of the Myth>

’Hm?’ He lifted an eyebrow at the curious title.

Flip—!

—Many, many years ago, mythical creatures roamed the surface of the world. Some lived among humans as if they were part of them, and humanity was utterly unable to spot the difference between the two.

He paused, leaning forward with newfound interest.

Flip—!

—Creatures that could only be said to originate from the deepest parts of the imagination. Entities that felt too fantasy-ish to be real. One of those legendary creatures are the werewolves.

’Hmm... interesting.’

Flip—!

He turned to the next page and began reading intently, his eyes and brain consuming each and every word.

He was determined to learn more about this strange race he had never truly heard of—a race that was seemingly a fundamental part of his burgeoning power.

Each word he processed and each page he turned brought a sense of enlightenment, though he couldn’t be certain if the information was based on reality or mere folklore.

Regardless, he read on, hoping to spot a single detail that would help him master his dual nature in one way or another.

—Just like humanity, even the werewolves have their own hierarchies. Unfortunately, I couldn’t learn more about their specific ranks due to the heavy restriction of information.

But I just know one thing.

Ray paused, his heart thumping against his ribs as he quickly flipped to the next page.

— Their leader is called the Alpha. In the entirety of the universe, there has never been more than one Alpha at a time, nor has there ever been a werewolf stronger than an Alpha before.

’Oh?’ Ray raised an eyebrow as a small, dry chuckle left his lips.

’An Alpha, eh? But damn. This is going to cause quite the hassle, to be honest. Just how large is this universe to begin with? Why am I only just hearing about things I never knew existed?’

He began rubbing his aching temples in deep thought, his eyes drifting to the next section of the page where the topic shifted from werewolves to another race he didn’t care about... at least, not for now.

’... Are the werewolves even still alive? Or have they gone extinct? Hopefully, it is the latter, because I can’t hope to deal with their mess while still struggling against the Aberrants.’

"..."

"I’m not naive. I have read enough novels to know that if the werewolves are still roaming out there, they will surely seek to eliminate me. Since I’m kind of an anomaly, it’s not far-fetched to think so."

«Hahaha~! Boy, you sure make me laugh. Why would you think a great race like the werewolves would worry about a pebble like you?

You are so insignificantly weak and useless that they wouldn’t even need to try to attack you.

Sooner or later, you will die—either at the hands of the Aberrants or something else,» Bruce snarled loudly from deep within Ray’s mind.

"Oh yeah? Well, don’t forget that if I die, you do too," Ray clapped back, a deep scowl settling on his face.

«Tch. I don’t care. I would rather die than remain stuck with an annoyingly weak brat like you.»

"You want to die so bad? Then be my guest, you overgrown dog," Ray hissed under his breath.

"..."

With a sharp, jagged exhale, he forced himself to calm down.

"Tsk. I need to go train. I want to master my skills before the next battle," he muttered, reaching out to close the books spread across the table.

But then, something caught his eye as he stared at the volume that spoke about the Alpha.

Instead of a typical novel, the writing style actually felt more like a personal journal of some kind, and he found himself suddenly interested in knowing exactly who had penned it.

"Jack Griffin."

That was the author’s name printed clearly on the book.
