Chapter 39- Grandma (Part 2)

The first period passed normally. Surprisingly, Elio was able to easily focus even though his mind was occupied with a million thoughts. He didn’t know if that was some sort of effect from his Blood Energy or not, but he was certain that his mind was a lot clearer than usual, and his ability to think felt faster and way less obstructed than ever before.

That helped keep his level of understanding on par with the rest of the class, even when he had a million other things he was going to do. When the bell rang, Elio immediately stood up and left in a hurry.

"Did you bring your lunch today, too, Miss Fiona?" A student asked with an eager look on his face.

The girl completely ignored him as she stared back at Elio, leaving in a hurry. Her eyes squinted for a split second before she turned to face the boy.

’What is up with him?’ Fiona asked herself. She felt off about it, but she couldn’t tell why.

"Ummm, Miss Fiona?"

"Hm? Oh, yeah, I have brought my lunch." She said as she stood up. "But, I won’t be able to join you today guys, my apologies."

The entire group’s vibe immediately disappeared the moment they heard that. They looked extremely sad.

"Why is that? Do you have something to do?"

"Yes. Have a nice meal." Picking up her box, she left the classroom under everyone’s eyes.

"She hasn’t been eating with us for a few days now... I wonder if she’s ok..." One girl muttered.

"She is a very busy person, I’m sure she’s going out there to work."

"Or... Maybe she’s having lunch with her fiancé! Oh my god, that is so romantic!"

"That lucky bastard..."

Reaching his usual secret spot, Elio sat down and immediately pulled his phone out. Staring at it for a few seconds, he tried to prepare himself mentally for what was about to happen. Many thoughts filled his mind for a second before he finally forced them all down and dialed the number.

’There is no point in being afraid to know. This is just the truth, and I’m going to accept it.’

Then, he called, and the phone rang for arduous seconds as he waited for a reply.

"Hello?"

"Oh, hey, Grandma. It’s me." He said in a hurry.

"How are you?"

"I’m doing ok. I’m having lunch now."

"Good. Finish your food properly."

"I will..."

"..."

"So... Umm, you told me earlier that we can talk now."

"Ah, yeah, absolutely. Right..." The old lady seemed quite apprehensive, and he could hear it in her voice. However, Elio didn’t comment on it and waited for her to speak. He didn’t want to say anything until he heard the full story.

"Sigh, my boy, Elio..." She began. "I have promised your parents never to tell you any of this. They made me promise them again and again. They were adamant that you live a normal life and never know any of this."

"..."

"But, Arsen and Anaya don’t understand it, and they never did. They thought keeping you in the dark would keep you safe. This world is far from safe, especially in the past few years. I would never be able to swallow keeping you clueless when a threat could come at any moment."

Each word his grandmother said sent a chill down his spine. A feeling of fear welled up in his heart.

"May they forgive me for this. But I care for my grandchild as much as they do. You’re my last family in this world."

"Grandma..."

"Have you ever heard of Vampire Hunters, Elio?" She asked. "Did anyone bring that name to you?"

"..." The boy pursed his lips, hesitating whether to tell her or not. In the end, he sighed and spoke. "Yes, I know all of that. Someone had told me everything."

"Hmph, I’m not surprised. I figured that someone would notice your talent at some point. I wonder who it is."

"It’s..." Elio hesitated again. He didn’t know if revealing who did it would be a good idea or not. Even if this was his grandmother, he didn’t know if he should reveal Fiona’s identity without her permission.

"Just tell her."

At that moment, Elio heard a voice behind him that made him flinch. Quickly, he turned around and saw Fiona standing there, leaning against the wall. She was staring at him.

"Just tell her." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦

His lips parted, a bit surprised. ’Has she been listening this entire time?’

"Elio? Who is that speaking with you?"

"It’s..." His eyes moved from Fiona to the phone before he finally spoke. "It’s Fiona Vaylor. Have you heard of her Grandma?"

"Fiona Vaylor... Wait, is that Vaylor’s brat?" She asked, seemingly quite surprised. "Where did you even meet that girl, Elio?"

"I... It was purely by coincidence."

"Good morning, Miss Emilia. It is my deepest pleasure to meet you." Fiona finally moved to sit next to Elio as she gestured for him to make the speakers louder.

"Hmph, you done your research on me?" The old lady asked. "Where did you find my Grandson? Did that old bastard tell you to target him?"

"O-Old bastard?"

"She is talking about my father," Fiona explained.

"Yeah, your father. Is he still the same egotistical bastard I know?"

"Indeed, he is."

"That man will change when the sun rises from the west. So, how did you find Elio?"

"It was as he said, by pure coincidence. I saved him from a Vampire attack a few days ago, and then I noticed that my abilities don’t work on him. So, I did some tests, and it’s..." Fiona’s voice slowed down toward the end.

"You learned of his true powers, huh?"

"Yes, Miss Emilia."

"Haha, my grandson is different, isn’t he? That boy’s talent is the best this world has ever seen. All the bastard patriarchs of the strongest clans spent their entire lives working toward creating the strongest Vampire Hunter that would eclipse the Progentior, and yet, fate always deals the cards, and it is Elio they want. The son of the people they hated the most."

"..."

"I don’t know if you are aware of the situation in the world right now but, Miss Emilia, Elio is in grave danger."

"I am aware. Those old men are sick and tired of words, and they want to use swords instead to finish their business. Seizing my grandson would be the trump card that would win them this war before it even begins."

"That is why... I would love to get your permission to protect him myself. I want to make sure he can grow and find his powers without any of these people trying to control him."

"Do you really think you could do such a thing? I have heard of you... Fiona, is that your name?"

"Yes."

"I have heard that you have a once-in-a-lifetime talent and you’re your dad’s greatest asset."

"I will never let him control me," Fiona replied with a serious tone.

"That is one thing you’re mistaken about. Your dad will always find a way to control you, even if you think you are making your own decisions. The only thing that would stop him is if he grows senile."

"He’s... He’s being consumed by his own ambitions. I don’t see a good end to the route he is taking right now."

"There is no good end to those who let power determine their lives. Power is a good tool, not a good book of law."
