Chapter 30 - 28: The Genin Who Took ‘Learn on the Job’ Way Too Literally
"C-Rank mission? Uh, alright then. The Hokage did mention that your team has clearance to take on C-Rank missions. Please, take your pick."
The Chunin at the front desk spoke in a bored tone, shuffling through a stack of mission documents.
His desk was cluttered with forms, scrolls, and half-finished reports, the smell of ink lingering in the air.
Garou swept his eyes across the list handed to them.
Most of the them were routine: escort caravans, deliver documents, minor protection jobs, and surveillance missions in small border towns.
Nothing exciting.
Then something stood out.
Escort Sakuraba Sadaki to the Temple of Fire.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
'Sakuraba... That's a noble name in the Land of Fire. And the Temple of Fire...'
"Kakashi-sensei," Garou said, tapping the paper,
"Let's take this one."
[Mission: Escort Lord Sakuraba Sadaki]
[Rank: C]
[Destination: Temple of Fire]
Kakashi glanced at the slip, then at Garou.
'This kid... he wants to go to the Temple of Fire?'
Of course he does. Kakashi had already seen how Garou's mind worked, always calculating, always seeking out something deeper beneath the surface.
Still, after a beat, he nodded. "Alright. We'll take it."
The Chunin hesitated, rubbing the back of his neck as if unsure whether to speak. "Kakashi-san, this mission requires you to rendezvous with Sakuraba Sadaki in the capital."
"There may be some... encounters along the road. Non-shinobi combatants, mostly mercenaries or bandits. Exercise caution."
There was a clear note of warning in his voice.
A suggestion.
"That's perfect!" Tenten chimed in, practically bouncing with energy.
Kasumi, as usual, stood quietly off to the side. In larger groups, she instinctively kept to the shadows, more observer than participant. Garou noted it, as always.
"We'll take it," Kakashi confirmed again, more firmly.
The mission officer reluctantly handed over the mission card.
Tenten and Kasumi exchanged excited looks, practically skipping out of the mission hall. Their energy was contagious.
Garou chuckled under his breath, slinging his small travel pack over his shoulder. "When things get dicey, don't go hiding behind me. At the very least, protect the client."
"Oh please, don't underestimate us," Tenten shot back. "You're the one who better not chicken out!"
The two girls spoke in sync, laughter echoing through the hall.
Their small group made their way toward the village gate under the morning sun, the pale blue sky stretching wide above them. The forest beyond the walls rustled softly in the breeze, birds chirping in the trees as if welcoming them to the first real mission of their genin careers.
Once past the final checkpoint, the girls' moods visibly brightened.
But Garou remained composed, silent. A compact pack was strapped to his back, and tucked into the top were three books, marked with notes.
He flipped one open as he walked, eyes scanning the lines while his feet moved in sync with the group. Completely unfazed by the outside world.
The girls, by contrast, were practically vibrating with anticipation, chatting about the capital city.
During a midday break, the team sat under a large maple tree beside the road, its branches casting a dappled shade across the grass. Kakashi eyed Garou, who was reading again while chewing on a ration pill.
"This is your first mission," Kakashi said lightly. "Are you not nervous at all?"
"Not really," Garou replied without looking up. "Besides, the mission hasn't technically started yet. Worrying now would mean we're not ready for C-Rank work in the first place."
He flipped a page, expression calm.
Blood. Death. Life.
Garou had seen more than enough of those in the medical division before.
The world wasn't kind, and he didn't expect it to be.
If danger came, he would deal with it.
Ideally, of course, the mission would be smooth. But preparing for the worst while hoping for the best, that was his standard.
He set the book down for a moment, running through a short series of hand seals.
Tenten and Kasumi watched, mildly curious.
Kakashi, however, was more intrigued.
He had chosen this team originally because of Garou.
But over time, all three had earned his respect. Tenten had become remarkably focused on refining her chakra control and weapon techniques. Kasumi trained quietly.
And Garou was in a class of his own.
His drive bordered on obsession.
His intelligence was unnerving.
His learning speed was ridiculous.
"Normal blade in your right hand. Chakra scalpel in your left?" Kakashi asked.
Garou nodded slightly. "As expected of Kakashi-sensei."
Kasumi's ears perked up. "Chakra scalpel...?" she echoed quietly.
"That's a medical jutsu," Tenten added, blinking. "Isn't it used for surgery?"
"It is," Garou confirmed. "But in close combat, a chakra scalpel can cut through muscle and tendons directly. It's not blocked by standard weapons and can bypass armor if used right."
"A left-hand technique... smart," Kakashi murmured, rubbing his chin.
It wasn't something most shinobi would even think to weaponize, not unless they had both high chakra control and combat instincts. But Garou had both, and then some.
"You keep at this," Kakashi said seriously. "You might end up developing your own fighting style."
The girls stared at him again. Then sighed.
This kind of thing had become... normal. Garou was an outlier. The kind you couldn't measure against. Not unless you wanted your self-esteem shredded.
"I've got the rough outline figured out," Garou continued. "But maximizing the chakra scalpel's effect, maybe I could add a chakra absorption effect?"
"Chakra absorption?" Kakashi's brow furrowed.
"Even a tiny drain per strike could shift the fight. Against high-output opponents, it could tilt the balance."
"You've been studying jutsu theory, haven't you?" Kakashi asked.
Garou nodded. "I read that Earth-Style: Earth Dome Prison uses chakra absorption as part of its defense."
"It does," Kakashi admitted. "The barrier absorbs chakra by converting it into earth-nature chakra. It's a restrictive dome more than a weapon. Integrating that into a weaponized scalpel... that's not easy."
Garou tapped a finger to his chin. "What if I extract the chakra absorption effect and project it from my body instead? Use that conversion as a filter?"
Kakashi paused. "That's... extremely risky. You'd be absorbing foreign chakra directly into your system. If their chakra nature isn't compatible, you could overload or damage your network."
"I thought of that," Garou said. "What if I embedded it into the blade itself? Keep the chakra outside my core."
"Technically possible," Kakashi admitted. "But that's S-rank difficulty."
"Perfect."
Garou's eyes gleamed.
Kakashi blinked. 'This kid just heard the phrase S-rank and got excited?'
But then again, Garou's chakra control was already elite.
And thanks to the Bodhi Seed, his spiritual energy and chakra control were still improving.
Kakashi sighed, then finally caved. "Fine. I'll show you the Earth Dome Prison."
He began explaining the sequence of hand signs, chakra molding steps, and internal chakra flow required to form the jutsu.
Garou listened once.
Then tried it.
And as expected, he failed.
Hand seals were just code.
If the program failed, you debug it. Rewrite it.
Garou adjusted, restructured the chakra flow, and tried again.
Kakashi raised a brow.
"You know, that's really not how you—wait... what?"
Garou's hand glowed faintly, and a soft, circular field of chakra began expanding outward.
It wasn't a full dome, but a localized chakra field laced with absorption effect.
"...It worked?" Garou muttered, inspecting it.
He calmly popped another ration pill and held his palm out, maintaining the structure.
Kakashi stood there, stunned.
Speechless.
'He's... winging S-rank jutsu like it's some basic ninjutsu?'
