Chapter 175 - Chapter 175: Reporting the Battle Results
The surviving Konoha shinobi were few, and even fewer would make it back home alive.
The brutal war had only just begun, and the most intense battles were still ahead. The Konoha forces stationed in Tetsuishi Town would have to endure countless more clashes. Their chances of returning to Konoha alive were slim at best.
Even elite jōnin like Uchiha Raiden were no exception. The battles to come would test them all, and death was an ever-present shadow.
After giving a few more orders, Jiraiya departed alone, heading back to Konoha at full speed. His chakra reserves and stamina allowed him to travel without needing to wait for anyone else.
...
Several days later, he arrived at the village. Without hesitation, he headed straight for the Hokage's office.
His main purpose in returning was to persuade Sarutobi Hiruzen to continue deploying forces to Amegakure in order to counter the shinobi from Iwagakure and Sunagakure. In the original timeline, Konoha had indeed engaged the forces of these villages in Amegakure and emerged victorious. However, unlike in the original events, Danzō was now dead.
Danzō, a staunch militarist, had always pushed for conflict. With him gone, the more soft-hearted Hiruzen might choose to change tactics—potentially conceding territory to avoid escalating the war.
Jiraiya's decision to return alone was a calculated one. By exaggerating the threat posed by the Iwagakure and Sunagakure forces, he hoped to pressure Hiruzen into continuing the campaign.
Although Konoha still had to remain vigilant against potential attacks from Kumogakure and Kirigakure, the village's current military strength was formidable. Even if they dispatched another 5,000 shinobi to Amegakure, their remaining forces would still be sufficient to defend against any sudden assaults from the other nations.
Konoha was not hailed as the strongest Hidden Village for nothing—its shinobi outnumbered those of the other great nations, often by a significant margin.
Jiraiya paused briefly outside the Hokage's office before knocking lightly.
"Enter."
A weary voice responded from within.
Jiraiya pushed the door open and stepped inside, finding Hiruzen looking more haggard than he had when Jiraiya had left the village.
Danzō and his Root forces had vanished without a trace, a fact that weighed heavily on the Hokage. He had received no word from Danzō, and the uncertainty gnawed at him.
Despite their ideological differences and frequent conflicts, Hiruzen still regarded Danzō as a close friend. Their bond ran deep, and he could not help but worry that his old comrade might have been killed.
At the same time, another possibility loomed large in Hiruzen's mind—Danzō might have defected. After all, he had recently suffered a significant loss of power within Konoha. It was entirely possible that resentment had driven him to abandon the village.
If Danzō had truly betrayed Konoha, the consequences would be dire. As one of the village's highest-ranking officials, he possessed intimate knowledge of countless classified secrets. Should he turn against them, the damage he could inflict would be catastrophic.
At this point, Hiruzen almost wished that Danzō had simply been killed. But he knew that was unlikely.
Danzō had taken an elite squad of Root shinobi with him. The only individuals in Amegakure capable of eliminating them would be Hanzō himself or a concentrated attack from a large group of elite jōnin. However, intelligence reports indicated that Hanzō and his top warriors had remained within Amegakure the entire time.
Given these circumstances, Konoha's leadership had reached a grim consensus: the likelihood of Danzō's defection was alarmingly high.
This uncertainty had left Hiruzen deeply troubled.
"Jiraiya, any news of Elder Danzō?" Hiruzen asked, a hint of hope in his voice.
Seeing his talented student before him offered some measure of relief.
"Sensei, there's been no sign of Elder Danzō. After he and his forces left their stronghold, they seemed to vanish into thin air. I even dispatched the Anbu to investigate, but they found no trace of him."
Jiraiya paused before continuing. "However, I bring both good news and bad news."
Hiruzen's expression darkened. "Let's hear it."

"The good news is that Danzō's disappearance did not hinder our plans. I successfully led our forces to capture Tetsuishi Town. We eliminated every last Amegakure shinobi there—none escaped. As for the civilians, those who perished did so in the crossfire of battle. The remaining population has been detained."
"The mining equipment is largely intact. If the village sends workers, we can begin operations immediately."
Relief washed over Hiruzen's face. The loss of Danzō had made him fear that the mission would fail, but Jiraiya had succeeded despite the setback.
"Excellent work," Hiruzen said, taking the battle report Jiraiya handed him.
After reading the detailed account, he was even more impressed.
Konoha's casualties were far lower than he had anticipated. He had expected significant losses, especially with Danzō's forces missing. Instead, this had been a decisive victory.
"Ryūgen was one of Hanzō's personal guards—a formidable opponent. How did you manage to kill him alone?" Hiruzen asked, visibly intrigued.
Jiraiya's feat had left him astonished. Ryūgen was a veteran elite jōnin, one of the strongest in Amegakure.
"Sensei, I mastered Mount Myōboku's Sage Mode. That was the key to defeating him."
There was no longer any need to conceal this power.
"You've mastered Sage Mode?!" Hiruzen shot up from his seat in shock.
Jiraiya pressed his hands together, and the distinctive markings of Sage Mode appeared on his face.
"Amazing! Truly amazing!" Hiruzen beamed with pride.
After regaining his composure, he asked, "And the bad news?"
Jiraiya's expression grew solemn. "After we secured Tetsuishi Town, shinobi from Iwagakure and Sunagakure arrived unexpectedly. Seeing that we had just fought a hard battle, they launched a surprise attack, hoping to wipe us out and claim our victory for themselves."
Hiruzen's expression hardened. "And the outcome?"
"They underestimated us." Jiraiya's voice carried a steely resolve. "In the ensuing battle, we annihilated them. Not a single enemy survived. We defended Konoha's interests and ensured our hold on Tetsuishi Town."
Hiruzen exhaled slowly, relief and pride evident in his eyes. "Well done, Jiraiya. Well done."
