Late at night.

The sky was as black as an overturned ink bottle.

The Land of Grass was enveloped in the night. All was silent. Occasionally, a few faint chirps of insects could be heard from the distant forest.

Inside a simple inn room in the town.

Three figures were sleeping soundly on the soft, sun-scented tatami mats.

Haruki slept by the window.

Nagato lay on the tatami mat next to Haruki, breathing evenly.

Aoki, meanwhile, slept in the room closest to the door.

Suguru had returned to the purple vortex when they rested.

Even in his sleep, Aoki's brows remained tightly furrowed.

Without warning, an extremely dazzling white light suddenly tore through the heavy night sky. Even through the wooden lattice window, the room was illuminated in an instant.

Immediately after, a highly penetrating explosion rang out.

Boom—

The sound of the explosion was like muffled thunder before a summer storm.

The inn where Haruki and his companions were staying vibrated. The window frame trembled rapidly.

Almost at the same moment the sound came, Nagato suddenly opened his eyes, his Rinnegan contracting in the darkness, and immediately looked at Haruki beside him.

Haruki yawned, and propped up his upper body. His gaze swept towards the direction of the lingering white light outside the window.

Aoki practically sprang up, moving so fast he created a gust of wind. His breathing instantly became rapid, and a hint of alarm flashed in his eyes. He looked around warily, subconsciously drawing a short sword from under his pillow and holding it to his chest.

Nagato sat up and came to Haruki's side, looking out the window with Haruki.

Nagato asked in a low voice, "What happened?"

Aoki realized that the danger had not descended upon the town. He frowned, lowered the hand holding the short sword high, and his gaze fell on Haruki and Nagato by the window.

Seeing their curious yet wary expressions, Aoki calmly explained to them, "You also know that this place is close to the battlefield, it must be Iwagakure and Konoha fighting again."

He lied back down. For him, this was too common. Lying in bed, Aoki had no more desire to sleep.

He said to Haruki and Nagato, "War could break out in Land of Grass at any time."

The explosion caused a brief silence. Soon, some new sounds faintly drifted in. No longer a single explosion, but continuous roars, mixed with some sharper, unusual noises.

Haruki, familiar with battlefields, knew those were the sounds of clashing blades and Ninjutsu being cast.

Outside the window, the dense night sky was occasionally illuminated by strange lights.

Aoki turned over, his back to Haruki and Nagato, his voice devoid of extra emotion. "You two should go to sleep. Although it's a bit noisy, if you want to stay in Land of Grass for a long time, you must get used to these sounds. After all, ninjas don't pick a time to fight."

Aoki's tone was flat. He himself was once a part of such battles. Now, he no longer wanted to return to that life. It was meaningless.

"Are Konoha and Iwagakure fighting? Here?"

Nagato looked at Haruki and asked, "So close to town?"

There was no extra expression on his face, making it impossible to tell whether he was worried or troubled.

"Just get used to it."

Aoki sighed, his expression numb. "This is the Land of Grass, a strategic buffer zone sandwiched between the Land of Fire and the Land of Earth, one of the front lines for Iwagakure and Konoha. Conflicts of this level are commonplace, a small skirmish every three days, a big battle every five."

Aoki turned his head to look at Haruki and Nagato, who were still leaning by the window, and instructed, "Let them fight their battle, and we'll sleep ours. As long as explosive tags and large-scale Ninjutsu don't hit the roof, just treat it as thunder in the distance. When you wake up tomorrow morning, everything will be as usual, do what you need to do."

Although Haruki was famous in the Ninja World, he was still just a youth. Aoki felt it was his responsibility to look after these two youths.

Outside the window, the town remained in silent. There were no anticipated cries, commotions, or panicked running sounds. Only the distant roar continued like background noise.

Haruki: "..."

It seemed the people remaining in this town had grown accustomed to it.

Nagato looked at Haruki. Although the room and outside the window were pitch black, he could tell from Haruki's glowing eyes that he did not seem to want to continue sleeping. 𝘧𝓇ℯ𝑒𝓌𝑒𝑏𝓃𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘭.𝒸ℴ𝓂

Whatever Haruki wanted to do, he would be by Haruki's side.

Haruki suddenly threw off his covers, and stood up. He put on his shoes, stepped onto the cool floor, and silently walked to the door.

"Haruki?" Nagato asked softly, a hint of doubt flashing in his eyes.

"I'll check outside." Haruki replied curtly, then gently pulled open the latch and pushed the door ajar.

The corridor was empty and pitch black.

Haruki looked out through the railing in the corridor. Not a single window of the low-rise houses in the town was open. All doors and windows were tightly shut. It was as if the town had long grown accustomed to such late-night sounds.

In the distant sky, a flash of fire was seen, then another muffled explosion sounded.

The small town still slept.

Konoha and Iwa ninjas were fighting.

Haruki couldn't sleep. He gently closed the door and turned around. An exceptionally firm light flickered in his blue eyes.

"I'm going to take a look." Haruki said to Nagato and Aoki.

His voice was not loud, but it echoed in the room with unusual clarity.

"What?"

Haruki's words made Aoki spring out of bed. He sat on the tatami mat, his face full of surprise and confusion.

Nagato looked at Haruki intently. He was not as agitated as Aoki.

Aoki's eyes widened, he looked at Haruki in disbelief and asked, "Haruki, what are you going to look at?"
