Chapter 1094: Chapter 1025: The One Who Has Been Drenched in the Rain
BANG.
BANG BANG BANG.
Shen Yaowei raised his gun with one hand, turned sideways toward the target, and calmly pulled the trigger.
In Yuwan City Bureau’s outdoor shooting range, the sound of gunfire echoed far and wide.
Shen Yaowei could be said to have squeezed out time from his busy schedule to practice shooting—a rarity among police officers.
Most come here out of necessity, firing a few dozen bullets to meet their quota. But Shen Yaowei was different. He increasingly felt that marksmanship was the bond connecting him and Jiang Yuan—a cord tying the two together. It was through marksmanship that his connection with Jiang Yuan grew stronger.
So, Shen Yaowei decided to practice his shooting seriously.
This was something he was originally very interested in and skilled at.
Although it hadn’t been much needed in prior police operations, since joining Jiang Yuan, the frequency of use had skyrocketed.
Especially because Jiang Yuan placed great value on his marksmanship, which made Shen Yaowei even more obsessed with honing his skills.
Even though Yuwan City’s shooting range was subpar and ammunition applications were a hassle, Shen Yaowei overcame the obstacles with determination and broke through the barriers.
BANG BANG...
After reloading, Shen Yaowei swiftly emptied another magazine.
He promptly moved to the fourth table and began loading again.
Yuwan City Bureau’s outdoor range used manual target replacement. Multiple chest targets were set up at once, shot one by one, and then all replaced simultaneously.
Another officer, who arrived slightly later, was shooting faster and had already reached the fifth target on the other side. He glanced at Shen Yaowei and asked, "Care for a competition?"
Shen Yaowei tilted his head to look at him and asked, "What’s the wager?"
"How about the loser has to shoot one more target?"
"Deal!" Shen Yaowei agreed without hesitation and fired his weapon.
The officer who had initiated the challenge was surprised by Shen Yaowei’s decisiveness. He originally planned to aim carefully with both hands, but instead mimicked Shen Yaowei’s method—holstering his pistol with one hand before drawing and firing in a quick combat mode.
Within a few seconds, both men emptied their magazines and exchanged a glance with a smile.
The challenger didn’t even check the target results, extending his hand instead. "I’m Yang Yinglin, from Narcotics. Have you been in live-action combat before?"
"Yeah. I’m from Shan Nan Province, Ningtai County Criminal Police Detachment, part of Jiang Yuan’s Accumulated Case Team," Shen Yaowei introduced himself.
Yang Yinglin couldn’t help but feel a jolt of excitement. "Jiang Yuan’s Accumulated Case Team—you’re one of God Jiang’s men?"
"Uh... yeah." Shen Yaowei wasn’t expecting such a strong reaction from Yang Yinglin and asked, "Have you been following Captain Jiang?"
Yang Yinglin clicked his tongue twice. "God Jiang apprehends more drug dealers in one year than my entire division does—how could I not pay attention? In Jiang’s team, are you specialized in... combat?"
Shen Yaowei had rarely seen such pure enthusiasm, fervent admiration, and curiosity on a peer’s face, especially a colleague. Considering his identity while away on duty, he admitted, "Sort of. Partly responsible for combat support, protecting Captain Jiang, and assisting in solving cases. After all, I’ve been following Captain Jiang closely..."
"Impressive..." Yang Yinglin, gun in hand, looked at Shen Yaowei with full approval. "No wonder you’re part of Jiang Yuan’s elite team. I’ve heard legends about you all..."
Yang Yinglin was robustly built, with a square-shaped face and an authoritative presence—not the type of person who easily dispensed compliments. His praise buoyed Shen Yaowei’s mood considerably.
Buzz buzz...
Shen Yaowei’s phone vibrated.
"I’ll take this call," Shen Yaowei said to Yang Yinglin with a smile, pulling out his phone. "Hello...?"
Wang Chuanxing’s voice came through: "Old Shen, new task allocation."
"What’s the situation?" Shen Yaowei’s face lit up with joy.
"Yep. Seven suspects have mostly confessed," Wang Chuanxing briefly summarized the capture operation and added, "Our tasks have been assigned. You’ve been given a new mission."
"Tell me," Shen Yaowei said, glancing toward Yang Yinglin while nodding with a faint smile. The shooting range was quiet except for the wind when people weren’t firing; Yang Yinglin might catch a word or two, giving Shen Yaowei a subtle sense of pride.
Wang Chuanxing’s voice turned more serious. "Captain Jiang has ordered you to proceed immediately to Daqiu Mountain Garbage Dump, rendezvous with Yuwan City’s Criminal Science Unit, and inspect the scene. Confirm the suspects’ statements."
"Huh?" Shen Yaowei froze and blurted out, "Another garbage dump?"
Yang Yinglin glanced over sympathetically. Among police officers, the phrase "garbage dump" inevitably signaled a grim assignment was imminent.
What could Wang Chuanxing say? He replied matter-of-factly, "Yes!"
Shen Yaowei couldn’t argue with Wang Chuanxing, letting out a sigh that felt almost palpable, as if the stench of garbage wafted into his mouth. To his surprise, he even felt a hint of familiarity with the idea of garbage dumps...
Though he didn’t need to ask, Shen Yaowei still wanted to know: "Why a garbage dump?"
Wang Chuanxing sighed. "Because some of the suspects previously scavenged there—or, rather, robbed scavengers at the site." frёeweɓηovel.coɱ
"What?" Shen Yaowei envisioned a dreadful scenario but hadn’t expected this.
Wang Chuanxing gave an affirmative noise. "I was surprised when I first heard it too. These individuals, while different in some ways, are basically former offenders whose lives have completely collapsed. They started hanging around Daqiu Mountain after failing to reintegrate after release, facing retaliation, and being unable to find jobs. They initially joined forces to deal with scavengers."
Scavengers occupy an extremely marginalized social role, yet police often interact with them. Factoring in their population ratio and likelihood of reporting incidents, their survival environment is all too clear. Scavengers constantly guard against each other but also band together. A few lone ex-convicts among them might not even fare well.
Thinking as he spoke, Shen Yaowei asked, "How did they escalate to child trafficking?"
"The gang needed money. They spent so long at the garbage mountain without making much, eventually growing restless. They didn’t dare resume their old street crimes when returning to the city."
"No wonder they spread rumors about selling kids. But opting for that path? That’s beyond reprehensible."
"Agreed." Wang Chuanxing paused briefly before adding, "They chose this path because the ringleader, Qian Tongqing—the one Captain Jiang wounded—used to have a daughter. Three years ago, while he was in prison, she was kidnapped. After his release, he spent over a year searching for her. Realizing how lucrative child trafficking could be, he proposed the idea to his cohorts when they had run out of options and were desperate to make quick money at Daqiu Mountain."
