Netori Harem: New life as a hunter and gatherer-Chapter 31: Trap set
The firewood crackled softly, and the rich scent of stew filled the kitchen as Luke stepped inside. He found his mother moving briskly between the stove and the table, preparing lunch for everyone.
It was unusual for the whole family to be home at this hour, especially Lex and Luke.
Since no one had eaten breakfast that morning, she had decided to cook lunch early.
Without warning, a pair of familiar arms slipped around her neck, gently pulling her away from the flames.
Monica smiled faintly. "You are back. What is the situation at the chief’s place?"
Luke let out a slow breath. "Mom... I am going to guard that place tonight."
Her body stiffened instantly.
She waved the hand fan once more to tame the fire, then turned to face him.
Her eyes widened. "You are not serious, are you?"
"I am, Mom. I am going tonight. But do not worry, I will not leave you unguarded either."
Monica shook her head. "I am not worried about myself, Luke. Four people died there yesterday. And suddenly... you decide to take the job?"
Her eyes grew moist as her voice trembled. "Please do not do this, son. I cannot bear to lose you."
Luke pulled her into a gentle embrace and lowered his voice. "Trust me, Mother. I have lived my life too cautiously to throw it away now. If things turn unfavorable, I will not hesitate to run."
Monica sniffled and looked up at him. "Do you promise?"
Luke smiled and nodded, "I do..." Then, he leaned forward and kissed her slightly parted lips to assure her.
Monica clung to his shoulder and returned the kiss.
He could feel her insecurities and fear but if he doesn’t do it, there was a high chance the danger would come barging in their home tonight. So, it’s better to be prepared.
As they separated, Luke teasingly grinned and asked, "If I come back safely, can you reward me with something?"
Monica blinked in surprise before asking, "What do you want, son?"
Luke pulled out something from behind. It was a box which he presented to Monica and said, "Wear this for me if I return back alive, okay?"
Monica peeked into the box and her cheeks turned red slightly. She knew what exactly was he wanting from her.
Even though she told him last night was the last time they were doing...that...he still wants her again..and this time...as a reward for his bravery.
She lowered her eyes and took the box.
The answer was clear.
The warrior gets the beauty.
And that motivated Luke more than anything.
....
During lunch, Luke suddenly spoke, his tone firm. "Listen to me carefully."
Everyone looked up at him. His expression was serious, almost cold.
"Tonight, before I leave, I am going to set traps around the entire house to prevent any intrusion."
Lex frowned, but before he could cut in, Luke continued, "The traps are lethal. Anything that touches the perimeter will suffer severe damage. So once the sun sets, do not, under any circumstances, step outside."
Lex scoffed. "Do you think we need your protection? Just because you have hunted a few injured animals here and there, you believe you are our protector now?"
Gustav shot him a sharp look. "He is thinking about our safety. Do not speak to him so harshly."
Lex snarled. "Oh, so you think he is the strongest in this family and the rest of us have to rely on him?"
Luke rolled his eyes. "If you are so confident, why don’t you guard the house tonight?"
Lex narrowed his gaze. "I do not need your advice on what I should do."
Laila and Caleb didn’t have a reaction to this conversation however faintly, one could tell that Caleb was slightly nervous that what if he was asked to guard the house instead? He might as well run away...
Luke shrugged, completely unfazed. "Fine. I will set the traps no matter what you say. There is someone in this house I want to keep safe."
Those words made Monica’s heart race, and Gustav chuckled softly at how his mate instinctively moved closer to their son.
She looked at her son...so determined and courageous. Without knowing, she has begun to see him in a different light. Someone she could depend upon...someone whom she always wants to please.
With that, Luke rose from his seat and left the house.
Evening was drawing near, and he needed to begin preparing the traps.
He did not know what awaited him tonight, but if he wanted to reach the goal he had carved into his heart, he would have to take the risk.
[Electrical Fence x2]
[Price: 600G]
[Buy: Y/N]
Luke crossed his arms, ready to confirm the purchase, when something suddenly surfaced in his mind.
Tilting his head slightly, Luke asked inwardly, ’System... you mentioned that replenishing an item only costs half of its original price?’
[Indeed... host.]
A grin spread across his face. "So if I leave just one meter of the fence unused, I can replenish an entire coil for half the price?"
[...Indeed, host.]
Luke let out a low chuckle. "That saves me more than a hundred Gamma points. Not bad. Buy me one set of the electrical fence, System."
There was no response this time. The silence felt almost sulky.
A moment later, a heavy spool materialized before him, thick wires tightly coiled around it. Several small and large stakes were attached along the wheel.
Luke crouched and examined the wires for a few minutes. They were not discharging electricity yet.
Just then, a description screen appeared.
[Attach the two poles connected to the beginning and end of the fence into the ground to activate the trap. The wires have a lifespan of one hundred hours. The fence can be deactivated by removing one of the two poles from the soil.]
Luke huffed and rolled his sleeves.
He had a lot to do today.
