Chapter 190: IT’S GOOD AS IT IS NOW

Wade walked through the corridors of the Oswalt mansion, his shoes clicking softly on the marble floors.

There was a small smile on his face as he headed towards the mansion’s entrance.

These past few weeks, he had become noticeably happy. It wasn’t only him, it was the same for his father the Marquis, and his... mother, the marchioness.

The Marchioness had gradually reduced the distance between them in the dining table to the point where she was now sitting on her rightful position on the right hand of the marquis and opposite himself.

The marquis was now allowed to sleep in the marchioness’ room, though it wasn’t all the time.

To everyone’s astonishment, Wade had been allowed to sleep in her room any time he wanted and Wade didn’t hesitate to go there every night, causing his father to be extremely jealous since he could only have that chance a few days in a week.

Wade watched as his father tried hard to get in his mother’s good books every chance he got and it was quite amusing to watch that stone faced man he knew as his father grovelling.

’Charlotte, it’s a lovely day and the sun is warm. Why don’t we go for a walk in the garden?’

’Charlotte, I got this tea from the neighbouring kingdom. It’s your favorite.’

’Charlotte, which coat do you think I should put on? Which do you like most?’

’Charlotte, you like the doughnuts served in The Vanilla Courtyard. I heard that food in The Vanilla Courtyard can be taken home to be eaten now. Would you like me to bring back doughnuts on my way back?’

’Charlotte...’

’Charlotte...’

’Charlotte...’

’Don’t you have official matters to attend to, George?’

’Are you chasing me away?’

’George, the carriage’s waiting.’

Only then would George reluctantly let her go. Charlotte would try to hide the red tint in her cheeks brought about by his actions, but George would still catch sight of it and so would Wade.

Even when George got into the carriage, his eyes remained on her as if afraid she would disappear, until the carriage was too far that he could no longer see her.

"Father has really been trying hard," Wade whispered as he turned the corner.

"Young Master," the servants bowed as he passed by.

Wade passed them a smile as he continued his steps.

Unlike before when most of the servants wouldn’t hide their disdain, dislike or pity for him, now they all respected the boundaries, acting properly as servants were supposed to.

But that wasn’t what made Wade happy or excited.

The third princess was right; the marchioness didn’t hate him. He was truly happy, so happy that he even felt like crying.

He quickened his steps towards the mansion’s entrance. There was still a few hours until the appointed time Aristia was to arrive, but Wade was too excited to even remember that detail.

The excited boy felt like telling someone about what happened and who better than Aristia, the first kind person in nobility he had ever met besides his father who showed no disdain for him, and his first friend.

The one who had consistently told him that Charlotte did not hate him and had always encouraged him to take courage and speak to her.

That he had asked Charlotte if he could join her for dinner when they returned from Duchess Winston’s tea party where she defended him a few weeks ago was all thanks to Aristia.

As he was lost in thought, just as he turned another corner, he bumped into something.

His eyes widened, but before he could fall back, he was grabbed by a soft hand.

He looked up at the face that was looking at him with worry before a smile took over her soft features.

"Where are you heading to in such a hurry, Wade?" Charlotte asked, steadying him on his feet.

"M-mother," Wade looked up at Charlotte. The blatant teasing expression on her face caused Wade’s face to unexpectedly heat up.

Charlotte helped to steady him on the floor.

"Um... I invited her highness, the third princess, to the mansion..." Wade started.

Charlotte nodded. She was aware of that, but... "Isn’t there still quite a few hours until the specified time written on the letter?" She asked puzzled.

Her gaze slowly moved towards Wade whose cheeks were stained red as he averted his eyes.

"Hehe," Charlotte laughed. Her hand stretched out towards Wade as she patted his hair. "If you go out now, you’ll be standing outside for quite a long time. How about we have tea in the garden?"

Wade nodded immediately.

"Prepare tea for the young master and I." Charlotte told a passing maid, then held out her hand to Wade.

He slowly took Charlotte’s outstretched hand as they headed toward the garden.

Unknown to the both of them, a servant was staring at their receding figures with anger and disapproval.

Charlotte and Wade sat down on the stone bench in the garden, sitting opposite each other.

A few minutes later, the maid that had been assigned to prepare tea arrived.

She served the tea before retreating to a distance out of earshot, giving the woman and child some privacy.

A gentle smile played on Charlotte’s lips, watching the young boy sip his tea.

She couldn’t help but think back to herself before and herself now. Her relationships and how she spent her time.

Because she loved George too much, so much that she hadn’t bothered forming relationship with others, focusing all her time and attention on him. She still loved him now, maybe even more than before now that her affections were being returned. It was a fact that couldn’t be denied.

It was only after she became heartbroken that she had any sort of relationship with others.

When Wade arrived, she hadn’t bothered to get close to him. She couldn’t be blamed; who would actively seek a relationship with their husband’s illegitimate child?

But Charlotte felt now that she could have at least tried to understand him. Why hadn’t she?

’Yes. Because I couldn’t bear the pain.’

But she loved him now and she loved how they were now. Maybe if she had made an effort back then, she would have become happy earlier than now.

’Or maybe it wouldn’t.’

Charlotte felt like it was good how things played out.

If she had quickly accepted it, perhaps George wouldn’t have realized his feelings for her. Perhaps they would have brushed over the situation and continued to live like before, with her trying endlessly to win George over.

’Yes. It’s good as it is now.’ A happy smile appeared on Charlotte’s lips.

Seeing that Wade’s cup was now empty, she picked up the teapot.

"Let me refill your cup."

"Thank you, mother." Wade beamed up at her.

Aristia climbed into her carriage with the Coachman’s help after breakfast. Lucas started the carriage towards the direction of the Oswalt Mansion.

She went alone, without Adeline and Owen, only taking her daemon with her.

Aristia put her head out of the window. The morning summer breeze carried a slight warmth and the sun shone lightly on the residents of Amberale moving about on the streets, and through the leaves on the occasional trees, causing the faint dew on the leaves to glisten in the sunlight.

"Your Highness."

Guards at the gate of the Oswalt Mansion bowed and quickly opened the gate.

The carriage bearing the emblem of the Amberale Ducal family passed through the gates and headed towards the mansion.

Aristia saw Wade standing in front of the mansion. There was a small, eager smile on his face when he turned his head towards the carriage.

A footman held his hand out for Aristia to assist her in alighting the carriage. Once Aristia was safely on the ground, she turned to Wade.

"Princess Aristia," he bowed slightly.

"Wade." Aristia smiled back.

She went with him into the mansion that was just as grand as the Grand Duke Mansion. It wasn’t as splendid as the Grand Duke Mansion but it wasn’t inferior at all. The Marquis was powerful, after all.

"Is the Marchioness around?" Aristia looked around even though it wasn’t like she would see the Marchioness by just looking around the corridor.

"The Marchion— mother is in the mansion." Wade’s voice became smaller but his eyes became brighter.

Aristia turned her head to him in surprise. Mother? That was new. Did that mean that Charlotte was finally accepting Wade? No. That she had accepted him?

She didn’t ask any questions. They walked silently down two corridors before stopping in front of a door.

The door opened to an empty drawing room. As soon as they took their seats on the couches opposite each other, a servant entered.

"Your Highness, young master." She bowed deeply, balancing the tray of refreshments in her hand.

She quietly placed the tray on the table, bowed again and left. She closed the door behind her, leaving the two alone.
