Chapter 38: Luminar Manor

Dr. Edmund’s was a man in his fifties. With a serious expression he checked on Severine’s condition.

An exhausted but relieved smile appeared on his wrinkled face. "Your speed of recovery is commendable. As long as you listen to me, you will be on your feet in no time."

He must have worked hard these days, Severine mused.

His words were indeed the truth that she had personally observed about herself.

The trauma from her earlier desperation had resulted in deep blue marks all over her body, but they were all skin-level injuries.

Awakening, she bit that word.

Ever since she had woken up, there was a strange kind of lightness to her body. Her breathing felt easier.

The monitor checking her heart was beeping in a slow, almost peaceful rhythm.

A sense of calmness washed over her. However, there was no other valid sign.

When she had earlier checked in the bathroom, what looked back from the mirror was a pale face lathered with deep and shallow scratches.

Same black hair, same dull gray eyes.

So exactly what kind of awakening was that?

Then those remarks she head in her blurry consciousness rang inside her mind.

Due to your weakened body, you couldn’t bear the impact and ended up fainting. Once all those scattered specks gather together, your awakening will be complete.

There were three conclusions she reached from those words.

First, her frail body had forcefully stopped her from awakening halfway.

Second might be ’different rules’ for different bloodlines.

The process of awakening greatly differed from person to person and from various bloodlines.

It took her mother three days to awaken as a Swan Awakener when she was six, just like her parents. Her hair had instantly turned from blonde to silver white.

Severine’s awakening might not be related to her mother or her father.

So, is it something from my paternal grandparents?

But none of them were related to fire. Or maybe she wasn’t clear about the situation.

I’ll have to check all the records.

Third and last were those tiny specks. Perhaps, she needed to wait until all those specks gathered together into that shiny ember ball of fire.

And from the looks of it, it was going to take more than just a couple of days.

Hah... Only if there were some sort of guidebook to follow.

Her wandering thoughts zeroed on the sharp pain on her hand.

Dr. Edmund removed the IV and pressed the cotton swab. Still not satisfied, he then placed medical tape on it. He clearly wasn’t convinced that Severine could put pressure on the bleeding wound.

"Don’t remove it just yet," he said before applying the medicine to her forehead and changing the bandage.

"The drug inside your bloodstream has caused your throat to be damaged. Other than the weakness, your chest will ache too."

While observing her expression and emotions, he adjusted her medicine again.

"Don’t try to speak and strain your throat muscles. It should be fine after two to three days. As for your body," he hesitated before speaking. "You need to eat more."

To call a young heiress malnourished felt like an insult to her family.

As someone who had experience in dealing with rich people, he was well aware that they cared more about their faces than their bodies.

However, the expected scowl didn’t appear.

The young lady merely gave an understanding nod, silently asking him to continue.

So, he directly laid the whole truth.

"And there is also a sign of long-term damage to the body. You should put extra focus on your health, child. Don’t always worry about those trades and all."

In short, he was pointing out the abuse she had suffered since childhood.

If not for the one who called him here, he wouldn’t have dared to be so honest.

Damage, huh...

"Hmm."

Dr. Edmund let out a silent sigh before adjusting the equipment attached to Severine’s body. The thin wires were slithering under her gown and stuck to her chest.

Beep. Beep.

It wasn’t a blaring sound anymore, but slow, rhythmic beats, showing her utter calmness.

Dr. Edmund, for his part, was intrigued. It wasn’t every day he saw a child of her age being so peaceful after such a horrifying accident.

What kind of life has she lived until now?

That question sprang to his mind.

Reminded by his professional ethics, he kept his mouth shut as he removed the extra wires from her body.

"Take care, young miss."

"Hmm."

If not for the ban on words, Severine would have wished him a proper goodbye as well.

However, what worried her more was her location.

Where is this place?

Those kidnappers had taken the time to circle around the Rhodes mansion before hitting the deserted road.

Her body was still weak, unable to travel far on foot.

It was a miracle that she had managed to cross all the trees and find the group of people partying there.

Her guess was that she had returned to the banquet. But clearly, it was wrong.

She picked up her phone only to be blasted by dozens of missed calls and messages.

[Where are you?]

[Are you alright? That mad dog didn’t do anything to you, right?]

[Sami told me you are busy. Don’t forget to eat on time!]

Sami? When did Alina and Samuel become close enough to call each other by nicknames?

Well, at least, Sam had saved her the trouble of explaining.

She had expected such behavior from the heroine, however, what was wrong with Damien and Emmett?

There were three messages from Emmett and two from Damien.

Her finger hovered over the notification for a second. Then she exited the messaging software altogether.

Let’s check the map.

The moment she turned the location on, her eyes widened a fraction.

Luminar Manor.

Situated close to the Rhodes mansion.

Oh god. Wasn’t this the place where the villain lived when Damien and Emmett attacked him from both sides?

She ran into him again... again!
