Nightblade (Darkest night)-Chapter 146: Discovery [2]
Time seemed to slow to a crawl.
But in fact, it hadn’t; it was the Bretnar king who was moving at a blistering speed.
And unfortunately, Emily’s body wasn’t moving fast enough to keep up with the accursed creature.
"Samantha! Watch out!"
The furry creature blurred through the air, reaching the unsuspecting girl in the blink of an eye.
Before her training with Lucian, Morgan and Talia, Samantha wouldn’t have stood a chance at holding her ground against the looming monstrosity behind her, let alone even escape it. She would have died in an instant without even realizing what had happened.
But now she was different, different enough to survive for a few moments and wildly track the creature’s movement behind her.
Her eyes widened in fear, heart pounding thunderously in her chest.
A surge of adrenaline surged through her, boosting her speed and strength beyond what she was normally capable of.
The fear gave her strength-strength, speed and a clear mind.
"I gotta move! And fast!"
With an uncanny instinct and reflex, Samantha spun on her heel, catching a glimpse of the towering creature through the haze of the deluge.
A clawed hand whipped through the torrents of rain, speeding towards her with impossible speed.
With a frantic yell, she leapt back, attempting to move out of the Bretnar king’s reach.
"It’s not enough! "
In a desperate gamble, she swung the majestic spear in the same motion, violently slamming it into the clawed hand using the momentum of her jump.
The impact triggered a devastating explosion that threw her several feet through the air and tossed back the Bretnar king’s hand.
The brief altercation gave Emily much-needed time, allowing her to catch up to the gigantic brute.
Stretching her hand out, a sheet of ice flowed through the rain, enveloping the giant creature, almost entirely.
The rain provided Emily with an almost endless supply of ammunition, significantly reducing the strain on her ability and allowing her to project over a vast area compared to what she could normally do.
With a shout, the tips of her dark hair took on an azure hue, the glow in he eyes turning even fiercer and piercing through the condensing fog that was slowly spreading through the rain.
A ripple of energy rippled through the air, instantly drawing the attention of creatures within her proximity, man and beast alike.
Every drop in the vicinity instantly froze mid-air, lengthening into small icicles.
The temperature in their immediate surroundings plummeted dramatically.
The temperature continued dropping, freezing the very ground they were standing on within seconds.
The Bretnar King turned away from Samantha, studying her with casual indifference, its dark, beady eyes boring into her own.
It took a few lumbering steps, coming to a stop a few feet away from her.
The creature towered over her, small droplets of crystallized water glistening off the tips of its fur.
Cassius froze, staring at the standoff in shock.
"Beauty and the freaking beast," he whispered, his eyes glued to Emily. The Talented girl looked exceedingly small and fragile in the shadow of the king of Bretnar, and yet she stood her ground, holding his gaze defiantly.
It made for quite a scene.
Small icicles quivered in the air around them while relentless torrents of rain dropped from the sky outside the circle of the area encompassed by Emily’s ability.
Even though Lucian and Talia weren’t Talented, in that moment, they could feel the raw power emanating from the dark-haired girl.
Her green eyes glowed chillingly, freezing the world around her.
A heartbeat later, the Bretnar king lunged at her through the rain with an earth-shattering roar, webs of drool dripping down its fangs from its hideous maw.
With unnatural calm, Emily slid back, gliding smoothly across the ground on the layer of ice. In the same movement, the ice around her flowed forward, latching onto the Bretnar king’s massive form.
The ice slowed its movements, seeping insidiously into the wound on its wing. Emily bombarded it with multiple small icicles, the small projectiles whizzing through the air with frenetic speed. The multiple projectiles pelted the massive creature nonstop, each of them hitting it with explosive force and aimed at damaging its vital spots.
The Bretnar king shattered the ice with a swipe of two of its massive arms, then barreled forward, ignoring the hail of bullet-like icicles.
With a casual flick of Emily’s hand, a gigantic pillar of ice bloomed into existence, appearing right beneath its head with impeccable timing.
With a groan, she condensed the ice, increasing its density exponentially with a thought.
The massive pillar slammed into the Bretnar’s chin, what passed for it anyway, in with a catastrophic impact, rocking the enormous creature and pushing it back, even managing to momentarily lift it off its feet.
With a groan, Emily gestured wildly through the air, straining her mind and ability to encompass the entirety of the small section of the battlefield where she was facing off with the Bretnar.
Without giving it time to gather its bearings, she pressed forward, encasing its legs in ice.
The sudden chill dulled its movements, the enormous blocks of ice holding it in place.
Giant blocks of ice rose in the air, melding together and coalescing, forming two gigantic spears in the air.
The massive beams of ice glistened in the dim light with a cruel promise of pain.
Lucian stared at the two massive bolts with wide eyes.
"Are those supposed to be ballista bolts?!"
Emily glared at the creature hatefully
"This is it for you, ugly freak!"
With a low shout, Emily directed them towards the giant creature.
Lucian and Talia stared at the Talented girl in a stunned silence.
Amanda, Cassius, Samantha and even the remaining Bretnar froze, watching with bated breath.
The giant beams of ice hurtled through the air with startling speed, reaching their struggling target within moments.
The large, massive spears detonated with devastating force, a small explosion rippling through the air and even pushing the youths back.
Talia stared at Emily in disbelief.
" How is this even possible? Even working together, Morgan and Lucian failed to kill that thing."
As the haze cleared, Emily stood hunched alone, breathing heavily with her fists clenched.
Straightening up, she indifferently stared at the Bretnar king’s unmoving body lying in the middle of a small crater.
The creature was still, unmoving...dead.
The unexpected twist created a brief lull in the furious battle.
Samantha stared at her friend in shock.
"Is she still really the same Emily? Wow..."
Cassius and Amanda stood with mirrored expressions of shock.
Cassius whistled a low appreciative whistle that came out as a howl in his beastly form.
In the next second, he roared triumphantly, lunging for the nearest Bretnar and ripping through it with ease.
"Let’s finish them off!" he roared, jumping and dodging through Bretnar’s smaller attacks with terrifying predatory agility.
In the next second, the unfortunate Bretnar let out a muffled squeak, drowning in its own blood.
Talia smiled, turning to Lucian.
" We did it..."
The words died on her lips, seeing the frown on his face.
"Why the long face... What’s the matter?!"
Lucian’s face was pale, his eyes narrowed in suspicion.
"It shouldn’t be possible. That thing shouldn’t be dead from something like this..."
" But it’s clearly dead, you’re seeing it..."
Lucian slowly shook his head.
" That thing was able to use umbralis," muttered, enunciating every syllable carefully.
" You and everyone on this small team of ours saw Morgan go toe to toe with it. Morgan is Awakened, a rarity even among assassins. On top of that, he got a technique. And yet he wasn’t able to bet that thing..."
He turned to Talia with a flabbergasted look.
" And yet a girl who just discovered her Talented ability managed to kill it?"
Talia paused, staring at him for a while, then shrugged.
"What do you suggest then?"
Lucian shook his head.
"Honestly, I don’t know...somehow, it feels like it went down too easily..."
Talia good-naturedly punched him in the shoulder.
"Not everything has to be so hard. It’s our win. We’ll take it."
Lucian sighed, turning away.
" Let’s find Morgan."
Triwing one last glance at the dead Bretnar, he sighed.
"You don’t get it, Talia, the amount of umbralis I sensed from that thing...by all rights we should be dead now..."
A short distance away, next to the Bretnar, a shadowy figure crouched next to the dead creature, staring at it with his lightless eyes.
Smoky tendrils of darkness wafted off the figure’s illusory form, obscuring its appearance.
Next to it, a giant winged creature stood indifferently staring down at the dead creature.
"How long are you going to remain this weak, young one?" the Drayghar spoke, turning its gaze to Morgan.
" The way I see it, you don’t have much time, and I won’t always be able to protect you like this."
Morgan stared at his smoky hands in disbelief, then turned back to the dead Bretnar.
The Drayghar turned nonchalantly, padding back in the direction of the devastated ruins.
"Come, let’s return before your friends find your body."
