Nightmare Assault-Chapter 481: Villa
Suddenly, a hand reached out from the back to cover Jiang Cheng’s eyes. Then, a seductive voice asked, “Why are you still awake?” Lin Wan ‘Er blinked at him. They shared the same bed. Jiang Cheng stayed close to the headboard and gave most of the space to Lin Wan ‘Er. Her long hair covered half of her face.
Jiang Cheng shook his head and turned around. He closed his eyes.
When it was time, Kui Yi woke Jiang Cheng. He told him to be careful. Weiwei didn’t sleep. When Jiang Cheng shook her, she looked startled. Jiang Cheng knew it was due to Du Feng. A familiar person died before her just like that. For a normal person, it was hard to accept. She was already better than most.
Other than the rain outside the window, there was nothing extraordinary. When it was almost dawn, the rain stopped. While the others woke up, Jiang Cheng took a quick nap. The events over the past two days drained him. When he woke up, the travellers gathered to share breakfast. Kui Yi bought the food from the nearby shop. There were buns, porridge and soy milk. He and Cao Yang just came back.
“The hospital’s night security disappeared.” Kui Yi took a sip of the porridge and announced, “The hospital has arranged people to look for him.” It wouldn’t take long for them to call the police. It was unclear whether it was a good or bad idea to involve the police.
“We joined the search for a while.” Cao Yang looked strange as he turned to Jiang Cheng. “There were two doctors in the search team. As we chatted with them, we noticed something. This hospital is not as nice as it appears.” Cao Yang whispered, “The staff here has a high turnover rate. Many of the existing staff are senior. The hospital hasn’t managed to recruit new employees in a long time already.”
Jiang Cheng was suddenly reminded of Zhao Ru. She said she was a new intern. Cao Yang clearly wanted to warn Jiang Cheng of her. “We didn’t ask them about the nurse.” Cao Yang lowered his voice. “We don’t want to spook them.”
Jiang Cheng turned to glance at the clearing sky. “We’ll leave the hospital to look for clues today. We need to find out more about the woman’s identity and Zhao Ru’s background.”
“That’s what we think too.” Cao Yang stuffed his mouth with a bun. “We found an address inside the archive. It could be the dead woman’s home.”
After the discussion, Jiang Cheng and Lin Wan ‘Er would look into the dead woman while Cao Yang and Kui Yi would focus on Zhao Ru. The young nurse seemed to have a hostility towards Director Qi. She often led the focus to him. Jiang Cheng believed it was not that simple. He was curious about her goal. Based on her age, she should be unrelated to the case from 18 years ago. Even if she were related, that would be a generation before her. Yu Yu, Weiwei and Wang Changguo would stay at the hospital to look for clues. Jiang Cheng didn’t expect much of them. Weiwei didn’t look right after Du Feng’s death. Wang Changguo was just unreliable.
“Come back soon.” Yu Yu said, “Be careful.”
With the money given by Kui Yi, Jiang Cheng and Lin Wan ‘Er called a cab. When the car brought them to a neighbourhood gate. The neighbourhood looked nice but slightly old and desolate. A decade ago, it had to be a high-end neighbourhood. The guardhouse had long since been abandoned. The glass was so grimy that one couldn’t see through it.
Jiang Cheng went to check and noticed a table and chair inside the booth. The floor was littered with trash. The place had been abandoned for years already.
When they entered the neighbourhood, they realised the buildings in front were apartments. Beyond that, there were all villas. The villas faced a sizeable yard. Since it was morning, there were few people. Two elders were playing chess in the yard. A few others watched them. Most of the residents were elders. After all, the neighbourhood was rather far from the city. The cab driver told them on the drive over.
Following the address, Jiang Cheng stopped before a villa. The villa gate was closed. The dark-green paint of the gate had fallen off. There was a lot of rust. One of the lights had been shattered. The other had a missing base. It had probably been stolen.
Jiang Cheng bent down. Through the gap, he confirmed that the villa was in a state of disrepair. There was a dead tree in the yard. A plastic bag hung on the branch. As the wind blew, it rustled noisily. Several wooden chairs were left at the side of the yard. There was a small pond, but it had dried up. To the left of the pond was a swing. One of the ropes had snapped. Despite the age, the swing set still had some pink paint. Based on the height, it should be for a child.
“Hey!” A voice came from behind them. Jiang Cheng whipped around and saw an elder sitting on the opposite street. The elder appeared weak. He was in a wheelchair. He stared at them coolly, “Who are you?”
“We heard about how pretty this neighbourhood is, so we came to take some pictures.” Lin Wan ‘Er smiled and nodded at him politely.
The old man smiled in return. However, he shot Jiang Cheng an inscrutable look. He uttered slowly, “Are you here to take wedding pictures?” The old man pointed in a different direction and ordered, “Go over there. Don’t stay here.”
Lin Wan ‘Er blinked coquettishly. She turned back to the abandoned villa and asked curiously, “Is there a problem here? I think this place is gorgeous.”
The old man was visibly impatient, but thanks to Lin Wan ‘Er, he still answered unwillingly, “That villa is inauspicious, especially for newlyweds like you.”
