Nightmare Assault-Chapter 483: Orphan
“Xiang Nan was unwilling to leave, so…” Weiwei looked concerned.
“But that makes sense.” Wang Changguo agreed, “Since the man failed to force her to leave, he did everything he could to send her to the mental hospital.”
“So the one who had an affair was not Xiang Nan but her husband, Yi Zhenliang! To force her to leave, he beat her and even used their son…” At this point, the indignant Yu Yu paused. She remembered something. The boy died. Could the boy’s death be related to Yi Zhenliang?
Could he have beaten his wife and murdered his son to be with another woman? No… Right? How could a human do something like that? Or could someone who did something like that be called a human?
“How did the boy die?” Looking at Jiang Cheng, Yu Yu asked with trembling lips.
“I don’t know.” Jiang Cheng answered, “The people in the neighbourhood can’t remember.”
That was the scariest answer, because the vagueness often hid a bloody truth. Yu Yu was willing to trust in humanity, but reality kept proving her wrong.
“Something’s fishy.” Kui Yi was rational. He whispered, “Or else the rumours would have said that the boy died from an illness. They wouldn’t be so vague.” Kui Yi was being kind, but everyone knew that he was saying that Yi Zhenliang had killed his son. Perhaps in his eyes, the boy was a burden towards a bright future. Similar to the stubborn woman.
“Do you think… the mistress knows about this?” Cao Yang asked strangely, “I mean the entirety of the situation.” 𝗳𝐫𝚎𝗲𝚠𝚎𝗯𝕟𝐨𝘃𝚎𝗹.𝗰𝗼𝗺
Jiang Cheng nodded. “It’s possible. It’s hard for Yi Zhenliang to do everything on his own. The woman probably helped him.” Or else they wouldn’t have fooled the police so easily. Furthermore, a child had died. However, from the looks of things, Yi Zhenliang didn’t get into any trouble. In fact, he pulled some strings and got Xiang Nan trapped inside a mental hospital for a whole year. The scary assumption was that Yi Zhenliang and his mistress had planned this.
The news Jiang Cheng brought back offered them a general direction. Then came the introductions from Kui Yi and Cao Yang. They went to investigate Zhao Ru. Jiang Cheng saw many suspicions surrounding this young nurse.
“We found Zhao Ru’s home.” Kui Yi began, “It is in a neighbourhood called California Beach to the west of the city. It’s not a rich neighbourhood. The residents there are middle-class. Her parents are retired. They used to work at a thermal power plant. Now, they run a mini store near their neighbourhood.”
“Her parents are retired?!” Jiang Cheng enquired sharply. Zhao Ru looked to be about twenty. Theoretically speaking, her parents shouldn’t be at retirement age. Furthermore, they were in an era where people had children young. Many people had their first child around 20.
“Zhao Ru’s parents are almost 60,” Kui Yi explained. The chance of them having a child at 40 was low, so…
“They are not Zhao Ru’s biological parents.” Jiang Cheng concluded, “Zhao Ru is their adopted daughter.”
“That’s right.” Kui Yi nodded. “We heard that from the boss of a nearby shop. According to the boss, Zhao Ru’s parents used to have a child of their own. It was a boy, but he fell ill during one winter and didn’t survive. After that, Zhao Ru’s parents seemed to lose their souls. One day, the neighbours discovered a female baby in their home. Smiles finally returned to them, and they worked together to raise the girl.” The girl was definitely Zhao Ru.
“Do they know where Zhao Ru came from?” Jiang Cheng enquired.
“They adopted her from an orphanage.” Kui Yi said, “The place is not far from California Beach. When we visited, the orphanage was still there. We spent some time finding the person who registered Zhao Ru’s paperwork. The person who dropped Zhao Ru at the orphanage was a man called Wei Zhao.”
Jiang Cheng regarded Kui Yi with judgment. Such information should be confidential. He wondered what tricks Kui Yi had employed.
“When Zhao Ru arrived at the orphanage, she was less than half a year old. Normally, the orphanage wouldn’t accept a child so young, as it was hard to care for them. However, the person came with money.” Kui Yi looked up. “It was ten thousand dollars. He wanted the orphanage to find the girl a good home.”
That was a lot of money in that era. A normal person couldn’t produce so much money casually. Who was Wei Zhao?
“Right. The paperwork showed that Zhao Ru was dropped off at the orphanage 18 years ago.” Kui Yi glanced at Jiang Cheng strangely. “Zhao Ru… is 18 this year.”
Everything matched. Jiang Cheng was reminded of Xiang Nan. She died 18 years ago. She was pregnant when she died. However, the records didn’t mention how far along her pregnancy was. Could it be…
But could the fetus survive if the mother died? Then again, the tragedy happened at the hospital. Maybe Xiang Nan didn’t die on the spot and managed to give birth to the child before passing away?
Jiang Cheng was not a doctor, so he didn’t know the answer. But he had a feeling it was true.
If Zhao Ru were Xiang Nan’s daughter, it could explain why she would come to work at this hospital with a bad reputation and keep targeting Director Qi. Zhao Ru also didn’t mind caring for the woman in Room 906. Everything that confused Jiang Cheng was connected.
They were there to investigate a case. Zhao Ru learned the truth somehow and returned to take revenge for her mother.
All the suspicions pointed at the man called Wei Zhao. Once they confirmed his identity, everything would be clarified. Someone who could control everything and save the baby would be of a powerful background. From the timeline, he should be someone inside the hospital.
“The former hospital director of this hospital.” Kui Yi paused, “He is called Zhang Zhaowei.”
Zhaowei…
