Chapter 261: The Only Unknown Variable

Jenna stared at Yohan with an indifferent expression. They were seated right beside each other on the bed, which made things increasingly awkward for Yohan.

"What happened?" She finally asked, she could also see that there was something off about him.

"Nothing," he said sharply, shooting her a glare "How do you expect me to trust you when you are Hatoru’s subordinate,"

"You never had a problem with it before now,"

"That was before you revealed my location to him, and almost got me killed,"

"What do you mean?" Jenna asked, her brows knitting together in confusion.

"Don’t even try to pretend, those people that were sent after me today were because you must have informed Hatoru about my whereabouts. If not how could they have known,"

She thought about it calmly, processing everything with her hand on her chin.

"Yohan there’s no way the boss would approve an attack here in school without meeting me for information, and in that case I would have told them not to attack you head on. I could have done it so carefully that it would be difficult to escape without a scratch. Did the people that attacked you seem like they had any information about you?"

Yohan didn’t want to trust her but he was forced to consider her words because there was some truth to it. These guys were skilled, and would have probably done a lot more damage if they had consumed their enhancement items before coming.

That lady had the ability to control her hair, since that’s the most outrageous one he had seen just yet, it’s fair to say those other men would have something of that caliber. The three of them at the same time would have been a troublesome force.

"Have you considered that maybe this was done by someone else?" She leaned closer, letting her head rest on his shoulder. Somehow she could tell this what he needed, someone to be close.

Feeling her arms wrap around him, Yohan suddenly felt the world go calmer. The constant racing in his mind eased up and he finally allowed himself to think about everything.

"Jenna... have you ever killed a person before?" he said after a brief silence.

She didn’t react to the question, only closing her eyes and opening.

"Yes, a few assholes. Most of them deserved it. They were dangerous people with zero regard for human life.

In a way, you could say I don’t value a person’s life that much either. I’d feel no regret killing an innocent person if it meant protecting someone I care about."

"I would rather everyone in the world die than to lose you," she held him tighter, as if he could vanish at any moment.

If there was one person who understood what he was going through it would be Jenna, he never realized how nice it was having her around until now.

Maybe she really was telling the truth, she could never sell him out to Hatoru.

If that was the truth then there was only one person that could come after him like this, and it was the person he had been dying to see.

"The Baker," he said calmly.

He was the only unknown variable and the only one that could possibly move this fast.

"He must have gotten Freddie," he reasoned.

This was only a speculation for now, but it was the best he could think of. If it turned out to be true, that would present a whole different problem.

Maybe even worse than Hatoru. He wouldn’t let him just go after killing one of his people.

Right now he could assume that the Baker only knew what Freddie knew, and that wasn’t much.

Other than the fact that he worked at school, there wasn’t much could say...

"Cassie..." his eyes shot open.

It was only a fleeting thought but he didn’t want to take any chances, he stood up from the bed.

"Jenna, I need to head out. We can talk later,"

"Okay, let’s meet at the gym tomorrow," she said as she put on her shoes.

Then she turned and gave him a gentle kiss on the cheek, smiling softly before leaving.

"She’s getting sweeter by the day," he said, rubbing his cheek, a flush of red spreading across his face.

He was just about to step out when he noticed a red object, sticking out from under the pillow on the bed.

Yohan lifted it to find his Red book, it had been there this whole time. He picked it and flipped through, just as expected there was new technique.

"Mind Unlock"

It was a touch technique like ’Lingering Touch’ but with temporary effects and it was to be applied to himself.

The technique temporarily heightened all five of his senses.

By channeling energy through specific pressure points around his temples and the base of his neck, Yohan could force his mind into a heightened state of awareness. His hearing would sharpen, his sight would become clearer, and even the faintest movement or sound would stand out to him.

For a short period of time, the world around him would slow—not literally, but because his brain processed information faster than normal.

However, the strain it placed on the mind meant it could only be used briefly before exhaustion set in.

"This is good"

With a technique like this his mind would be able to match the speed of his body even if only for a few minutes. His reflexes and reaction time wouldn’t be driven by instinct alone. Every movement would be deliberate, his body responding exactly as he willed it.

He chuckled imagining just how insane that would be,

’I wonder who could even push me to go all out like that...’

It was hard to imagine someone that strong. Even with all their enhancements, they could only make him use fifty percent of his power and even that was too dangerous for some.

Deep down he wondered if the Baker was going to be any different.

"To be honest, it would be disappointing after all this hype,"
