Chapter 22 - D-day
Sky was busy polishing the glasses when Vorden arrived.
However, upon asking, it seemed Sky had little recollection of their childhood.
"I'm only reminded of when Grandad told you to kill your favourite dog, and you did. It was quite shocking at the time."
Vorden wasn't surprised.
It only confirmed that the late Top-Level Seeker had been a strict trainer, shaping him into an assassin as per his path.
Not that he currently needed such training.
If strength was to be gained through killing, he would gladly get rid of those who wasted what they had.
Since Sky couldn't remember anything useful, he would have to find out the truth himself.
Two hours later, Amy had breakfast ready for the family.
Four plates were set—one for Amy, one for Vorden, one for Sky, and one for May.
Each plate had buttered crumpets with blackberry preserve, soft-poached eggs on sourdough toast, smoked kippers, and roasted cherry tomatoes.
A bowl of strawberries and cream was set to the side.
Alongside the meal, cups of Syntha-Leaf Infusion, a refined blend designed for enhanced focus and vitality, were served steaming hot.
Amy, Sky, May, and Vorden each began their meal, eating in silence at first.
The buttered crumpets were warm, and the blackberry preserve added a subtle sweetness.
The poached eggs on sourdough toast were soft, and the yolks broke easily, soaking into the bread.
The three—Amy, May, and Sky—were now busy conversing while eating, laughing hard at their own dark jokes.
Vorden ate methodically, focusing on the food but allowing his mind to analyse the question that had been bothering him.
The written records he had uncovered referred to a group of individuals—"others"—who had played a role in how he had been perceived.
The main issue was identifying who they were and what their intentions had been.
The first possibility suggested that these individuals had been his own family.
If this were true, then they must have judged him as permanently weak after his injury.
This would imply that their trust in him had been conditional and based entirely on his physical ability.
If his own family had considered him a lost cause, it would explain why they had never encouraged him to recover or improve.
Although the idea was frustrating, it was logical.
Many Seeker families valued strength above all else, and those who failed to meet expectations were often discarded.
The second possibility suggested that the "others" had been mentors or Seeker officials (professional seekers affiliated with a faction)who had evaluated him in the past.
If they had tested him and found no trace of a Special Sense, then they might have deemed him a failure.
That would explain why he had been overlooked and why no opportunities had been given to him.
If he had not been suited for their system, then in their eyes, he had been irrelevant from the start.
The third possibility was the most troubling.
There was a chance that these individuals had lied to him for a reason.
If they had deliberately hidden something about his abilities, then it could mean he possessed power after all, but they had ensured that he would never realise it.
This raised questions about their motives.
Had they been trying to control him?
Had they feared what he might become if he discovered the truth?
Without further evidence, he could not determine if this possibility was realistic, but it was one he could not ignore.
Vorden continued eating, chewing slowly as he processed his thoughts.
He could theorise all he wanted, but without concrete proof, he would only be running in circles.
The best course of action would be to gather more information, compare the details, and identify any inconsistencies.
Once he had enough evidence, he would be able to determine which possibility was correct.
For now, he remained patient.
The truth was there, and sooner or later, he would find it.
After finishing breakfast and clearing the used plates, everyone went off to do what they enjoyed.
However, Vorden returned to his room to finalise more information.
All he could do was take notes.
At the very least, this would help with his memory.
For a while, he took a nap, woke up, refreshed himself, and continued.
He repeated this routine for two days.
At some point, he managed to gather a few pieces of information, though nothing particularly significant.
Finally, the day had arrived.
It was the long-anticipated Initiation Day.
"Finally, it's time to experience the real thrill of this world," Vorden muttered to himself, a sly grin forming as he donned a dark brown leather jacket and black jeans.
He swept his hair back, revealing the faint black lines beneath.
His two siblings had already departed to their Academy.
Meanwhile, May had returned to his panel's space.
He couldn't afford to leave her at home for an entire week.
He planned to let her out occasionally, and on weekends, she would be completely free.
However, with so many students at the academy, it was best to keep her contained.
The cage he bought turned out useless at this point as he wasn't certain of the idea to bring it along with him to the Academy.
May was a menace (obviously emphasised upon and repeated each time), and there was no predicting the havoc she might cause.
Vorden had no interest in unnecessary trouble, nor did he want to endure the piercing mental noise of her protests demanding release.
With everything settled, he finally set off, taking an air cab to the academy.
It seemed he would be away from home for five days—not quite long enough to be considered a full week.
Upon arrival, he stepped out with effortless confidence.
Around him, other students descended from sleek chauffeur-driven vehicles, while others, like him, arrived via air cabs.
Each student carried belongings they deemed essential for the week ahead.
Vorden, however, brought only a small bag.
Inside, his clothes were compacted into a trinket storage device, with only his undergarments physically packed.
Not that he was certain he would even need them, but it didn't matter.
His gaze lifted towards the academy's colossal estate gates as they slowly parted, granting entry to the mass of incoming students.
"Welcome to Soul Academy. Today marks the beginning of your legendary journey as a Seeker," a voice, likely that of a maiden, resonated.

"From this moment forward, you will face trials that may push you to the brink of madness. Adapt accordingly. This is merely the beginning."
Above them, flying bots hovered, guiding the students towards the vast arena prepared for the event.
