Chapter 78: Chapter 78: The Recording

My eyes lit up. "What evidence?"

Sebastian Forrest parted his lips, but just as he was about to speak, his phone suddenly vibrated in his pocket.

He instinctively glanced at the caller ID before answering. "Hello..."

"Okay, I got it. Just send it straight to my phone."

After he hung up, I heard his phone buzz. I caught a glimpse out of the corner of my eye and saw that a video file had arrived in his notifications.

Sebastian Forrest didn’t try to hide it from me. He tapped it open, and the video immediately started to play.

In the familiar hallway, Clara Langley stood staring toward the elevators for quite a while before furtively creeping over to my brother’s room to knock.

"Oh! What happened to your face?" Clara Langley asked, her face a mask of surprise.

"Come in and we’ll talk." The camera only caught my brother’s hand as it reached out and led Clara Langley into the room.

The video ended abruptly there.

I couldn’t help but feel a suffocating anger. Although I had already confirmed my brother’s relationship with Clara Langley was unusual, seeing them actually on film, holding hands as they entered a hotel room, still made my stomach churn.

After a struggle to suppress my anger, I pursed my lips. "This doesn’t really count as evidence..."

’After all, they didn’t even capture his face clearly.’

’Of course, even if they had gotten a clear shot, I wouldn’t let my brother get dragged into this mess.’

"This isn’t the evidence I was talking about," Sebastian Forrest said with a soft smile. He then took a Bluetooth earpiece from his pocket and placed it in my ear.

I stared at him in astonishment, wondering why he was having me wear an earpiece.

"I left a recording device in the room when I came out earlier."

"..."

I silently gave him a thumbs-up. Just as I was about to praise him further, a voice came through the earpiece.

It was Clara Langley’s voice.

"Didn’t I tell you not to contact anyone? Why did you go and call your sister and Master Forrest over?"

"I didn’t call them. They found their own way here," my brother said, his voice tinged with indignation. "They were following us when we met in the woods earlier."

"What?" Clara Langley’s voice shot up an octave. "You’re saying they were there when we met?"

"Yes."

"No wonder..." Clara Langley’s voice was seething. ’She must be thinking about what I said in the hallway earlier.’

Sebastian Forrest and I exchanged a quick glance, the corners of our mouths lifting in a slight, simultaneous smile.

’There’s nothing more satisfying than a boomerang, especially one you get to witness in real time.’

"No wonder what?" my brother pressed. "Did you run into them outside the door just now?"

"Yes," Clara Langley said with a deep breath. "Your sister seems to really hate me. She even warned me to stay away from you..."

"Don’t listen to her nonsense!"

"Maybe... we should just break up..." Clara Langley sighed. "She’s the only sister you have. I don’t want to ruin your relationship over me..."

"She’s not my sister!" my brother said hurriedly.

His words were like a vicious knife to my heart, and my eyes began to sting with unshed tears.

’Ever since we were young, my brother never seemed to like me much. I’d always assumed he was just bad at expressing his feelings, so I never let it bother me.’

’But to actually hear him disown me as his sister for an outsider... I couldn’t help the ache in my heart.’

Clara Langley must have tried to leave then, but my brother stopped her. A rustling sound came through the earpiece, followed by Clara Langley’s voice. "I’ll be honest with you. I just don’t think we’re compatible."

"How are we not compatible?" my brother’s voice was urgent. "In what way?"

"Incompatible is incompatible." Clara Langley had clearly run out of patience. "Let’s just be friends."

"Clara..."

Then, the sound of a door opening came through the earpiece, followed by the crisp CLICK-CLACK of high heels growing fainter and fainter until they vanished completely.

By this time, Sebastian Forrest and I had already taken the elevator down to the parking garage. I handed the earpiece back to him, feeling angry and frustrated, but with nowhere to vent.

’Even though it was only a brief conversation, I could tell Clara Langley was just using my brother, ready to toss him aside once she was done.’

But just as that thought occurred to me, I stopped in my tracks.

Sebastian Forrest, who had been keeping an eye on me, stopped too. "What is it?" he asked softly.

"If Clara Langley is just using my brother, he must have something she can use, right? But he’s unemployed. What value could he possibly have for her to exploit?"

’Over the years, thanks to his connection with the Grant Family, my brother has certainly reaped some benefits. He’s even been elevated to ’Mr. Joyce’ in the eyes of others.’

’But I knew that without Theodore Grant, no one would give my brother the time of day.’

’So why would Clara Langley go to such great lengths to get close to such a useless man?’

Sebastian Forrest’s brow furrowed slightly. "She’s most likely targeting you."

I nodded. That’s what I suspected, too.

But—

"What exactly does she want from my brother?"

Sebastian Forrest shook his head, then a slight smile touched his lips. "Don’t worry. We’ll figure it out eventually."

Just then, out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of someone standing by the car. They looked vaguely familiar...

"President Forrest, Miss Joyce."

The moment he spoke, I immediately remembered who he was.

Henry Paxton—Sebastian Forrest’s special assistant.

’He was the one who brought Sebastian Forrest back when he was drunk the other day.’

"Back to Sherwood Manor," Sebastian Forrest said, tossing the keys to Henry Paxton.

Once we were in the car, Sebastian Forrest took out his phone and scrolled for a moment before holding it out to me with a smirk. "Weren’t you asking about the evidence I mentioned?"

My eyes lit up. I quickly took it and hit play.

Instantly, the amorous sounds of a man and a woman filled the entire car!

My face flushed instantly. I fumbled with the phone, trying to lower the volume, but I mistakenly hit the lock button instead...

Just then, with a CLICK, the partition in front of us began to rise. It was Henry Paxton, who had pressed the button to raise the divider, blocking our view of the front and muffling the sound...

"..."

’He must have gotten the wrong idea!’

As I, red-faced, was about to shove the phone back at Sebastian Forrest and tell him to turn off the mortifying audio, I suddenly heard a familiar voice from the speakers—

"Un... Uncle, don’t... What if someone finds out?"

"I can’t take it anymore. Be good, Clara..."

I whipped my head around to look at Sebastian Forrest, my face a mask of disbelief. This was—

This was the recording of Clara Langley and Vincent Lombard’s affair in the changing room that day!

’How did it end up on Sebastian Forrest’s phone?!’
