On Our Wedding Day My Husband Announced His First Love Online-Chapter 9: Do You Like Chelsea Joyce?
For a moment, I couldn’t even believe my ears.
’Clara Langley got divorced because of Theodore Grant?’
But he had clearly said before that he didn’t know about Clara Langley’s divorce...
Just as my mind was racing with anxious thoughts, a derisive snort echoed from the room, dripping with mockery.
"So, what are you planning to do? Get a divorce? Get back together with Clara Langley? Patch things up?"
Apparently displeased by the mockery in Sebastian Forrest’s tone, Theodore Grant’s voice deepened. "I’ve never considered divorce, and I’m not getting back with her."
My heart, which had turned completely cold, warmed slightly at his words.
’It seems the divorce was all her idea...’
"Theodore Grant, do you love Chelsea Joyce?"
The moment he asked, my heart clenched.
I have loved Theodore Grant for twelve whole years. I gave him my entire heart.
But what about him...?
’Does he love me the way I love him?’
I held my breath, filled with anticipation, desperate for a glimmer of hope.
I was desperate for him to say he loved me, for our marriage to still have a fighting chance...
But what followed was silence.
Endless silence.
My heart grew cold bit by bit, until the sudden ring of a cellphone shattered the quiet.
It was Theodore Grant’s ringtone.
"Hello? What is it now? Didn’t I tell you I’m busy today?" Theodore Grant’s voice carried a forced annoyance, but his tone held an unconscious intimacy. It was obvious the person on the other end of the line was the very center of their recent conversation—Clara Langley.
I don’t know what was said over the phone, but Theodore Grant’s voice instantly grew tense. "Okay, I get it. I’m on my way."
My heart sank to the pit of my stomach—as I’d feared, Theodore Grant was different when it came to Clara Langley.
With her, Theodore Grant was always the first one to give in.
’I guess this is what they mean by the favored having nothing to fear.’
"Theodore Grant, you’ve gone too far!" Sebastian Forrest finally seemed to snap, his voice dropping low.
The deadly aura he’d honed over the years was unconsciously released, creating an oppressive pressure that felt like needles on one’s back.
"Chelsea Joyce has loved you for over a decade. Even an outsider like me can see she relies on you, trusts you, and plans to spend the rest of her life with you..." He paused. "And you? Theodore Grant, are you worthy of her love?"
"Alright, that’s enough." Theodore Grant clearly didn’t want to hear any more, his tone growing heavy. "This is between me and Chelsea."
I heard footsteps approaching the door and was suddenly struck by the awkwardness of eavesdropping. Terrified of running into Theodore Grant, I didn’t think twice and ducked into the hot water pantry nearby.
"Theodore Grant!"
Just then, the sound of a back slamming against the wall echoed from the corridor, as if someone had been forcefully pinned. A low voice followed, "If you dare walk out of here today, don’t you dare regret it later!"
Theodore Grant shook his hand off and said urgently, "I don’t have time to explain. Clara’s depression is acting up, and I’m afraid something might happen to her. I have to go check on her immediately!"
"Depression?" Sebastian Forrest scoffed. "Only you would fall for such a pathetic trick."
Theodore Grant pressed his lips together and straightened his disheveled collar. In a low voice, he said, "Her husband saved my life. I can’t just stand by and watch something happen to her."
"If you want to repay a debt, you should be repaying her ex-husband. What does a divorcée like Clara Langley have to do with it?" Sebastian Forrest snorted with contempt.
Theodore Grant was choked speechless. After a moment’s pause, he frowned and said, "Forget it. There’s no explaining it to you. I have to hurry over there. You take Chelsea home for me."
With that, Theodore Grant didn’t spare another glance at Sebastian Forrest’s cold, aristocratic face and strode away.
...
As the footsteps faded, I leaned against the wall, all my strength drained away, an infinite sadness flooding my heart.
This was the man I had loved for twelve years.
When I married him two years ago, I thought I was the happiest woman in the world.
Now, it seemed—
I was a complete and utter joke.
"Who’s there?!"
Just then, Sebastian Forrest’s sharp shout pulled me from my thoughts. Before I could even react, a handsome face, etched with a chilling aura, appeared before me.
But when he saw my face, Sebastian Forrest froze for a second. "Chelsea..."
"What are you..." He quickly recovered and, as if realizing something, frowned slightly. "Did you hear everything Theodore Grant and I just said?"
I moved my lips, but my throat felt as if it were clogged with a waterlogged sponge. I couldn’t make a sound.
Feeling my eyes begin to sting and well up, I quickly lowered my gaze. It took a long while before I could speak. "I’m sorry to have troubled you with changing my mother’s hospital room, Senior Forrest. Thank you."
"You don’t have to be so polite with me." Sebastian Forrest’s voice was exceptionally warm and deep.
I knew he meant well—after all, he had been standing up for me in front of Theodore Grant just now. But right then, all I wanted was to find a quiet place to be alone. I didn’t want any outsiders to see me looking so wretched and heartbroken.
"I-I’m going to go find the attending physician to ask about my mother’s condition..."
But just as I was making an excuse to leave, a hand suddenly grabbed my wrist.
I turned back, my face full of astonishment, and met a pair of deep, dark eyes. "What I said last time still stands."
’What he said last time?’
Seeing my confusion, Sebastian Forrest gave a helpless, light laugh and shook his head. Then, his smile vanished, and his gaze fixed on me. "If you want a divorce, I can help you."
’A divorce...’
I froze for a moment.
’When I was lost in despair just now, the thought of divorce did cross my mind.’
’But what flooded my heart more was hesitation and reluctance...’
’I’ve loved Theodore Grant for twelve whole years.’
’I’ve spent almost half my life loving him.’
’How could I possibly let go so easily?’
’Besides, I knew from the very beginning, when I married him, that he didn’t love me.’
’I was just naive enough to think I could make him fall in love with me, too.’
’If I divorce him...’
’Would I be able to live with that?’
’Would I truly have no regrets?’
’What’s more, I’m pregnant with Theodore Grant’s child right now...’
I subconsciously touched my lower abdomen. It suddenly occurred to me that if we really did get a divorce, the child would be the biggest tie between us. It would be impossible for Theodore Grant and me to ever make a clean break.
’But if I stay in a marriage like this, is it fair to the child?’
’Not to mention, if Theodore Grant, with his suspected low sperm count, found out I was pregnant, he would definitely fight for custody...’
A torrent of jumbled thoughts flooded my mind, leaving me unable to decide what to do.
But I knew that no matter what, Sebastian Forrest’s words gave me a bit more confidence...
"Senior Forrest, thank you." I looked up at him and said with newfound seriousness, "If that day ever comes, I’ll ask for your help."
Sebastian Forrest’s gaze seemed to flicker over my lower abdomen, and his brow furrowed almost imperceptibly. But when he looked up, a bright smile was already on his face. "Alright."
