On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 131: Lending a Helping Hand
Claire White didn’t dare to imagine her fingers becoming more flexible. All she wanted was to be able to play the piano again.
But... she had missed the finals, which were the day after tomorrow. The thought made a wave of sadness wash over her.
Seeing the look on her face, Asher White immediately tried to comfort her. "Sis, it’s just one competition. It’s okay. When you’re all better, you can enter even bigger ones and hold your own concerts. I’ll study hard with Mr. Langdon, and from now on, I’ll protect you. I’ll never let you get hurt again."
Claire White felt a sting in her nose, and tears welled in her eyes again. "Silly boy," she said softly. "I don’t need you to protect me. I’ll be more careful from now on. I’m the one who’s supposed to protect you while you grow up."
Watching the two siblings, Chloe Sterling’s gaze darkened slightly. She suddenly asked, "How did you get into a car accident? Did they catch the driver responsible?"
At her words, Asher White’s expression soured. "They caught him," he said coldly. "The bastard was driving drunk and hit the taxi my sister was in. The taxi driver was hospitalized, too. But since the jerk reported it himself and paid the medical expenses, he’ll only be locked up for a little over ten days. When he gets out, I’m going to cripple him!"
Claire White immediately chided him, "Asher, don’t you dare do anything reckless! If something happened to you, I could never forgive myself."
"I won’t let anything happen to me."
"Behave."
Asher White pressed his lips together. "I know."
Claire White looked at Chloe Sterling and Chase Langdon again. "Miss Sterling, Mr. Langdon, thank you for visiting me. Once I’m out of the hospital, I’ll come to the training hall to thank you in person."
Chase Langdon said, "Miss White, there’s no need to be so formal. Just focus on your recovery. You’ll get better."
"Yes, thank you," Claire White replied.
Asher White stayed behind to keep his sister company.
After leaving the hospital room, Chloe Sterling asked, "Why is it just the two of them here? Where are their parents?"
Chase Langdon scoffed. "Their father is ’busy,’ and their stepmother is busy shaking down the driver for money."
’Another pair of irresponsible parents.’
Chloe Sterling’s expression turned colder.
Speak of the devil.
The words were barely out of his mouth when Claire White’s stepmother rounded the corner. She recognized Chase Langdon but shot them a dirty look before entering the hospital room.
Chase Langdon’s expression chilled. "Let’s wait a minute before we go," he said.
The two of them stepped back toward the room and immediately heard the woman’s voice. "Claire, don’t you worry. Mom will make sure you get justice."
Claire White looked at her, her tone icy. "Are you trying to get justice for me, or are you just after the money?"
The woman’s expression changed instantly. "What’s that supposed to mean? What else would we want if not money? His life? Your hand is ruined! You’ll never be able to play the piano again. Of course we have to demand a bigger settlement!"
"Shut up!" Asher White snapped. "Your hand is the one that’s ruined! My sister’s hand is fine."
"What do you mean, ’fine’?! The doctor said her hand is ruined and she’ll never play the piano again! Stop spouting nonsense!"
If Claire White’s hand wasn’t ruined, they wouldn’t get as much compensation money. Naturally, the woman didn’t want to hear any of this.
"I think you’re the one hoping her hand is ruined so you can demand more money," Chase Langdon suddenly said coldly from behind them.
The woman turned around, stunned to see they had come back. She faltered for a second before continuing, "What do you mean, I’m hoping her hand is ruined? That’s what the doctor said! Claire is my daughter. She plays the piano beautifully; she’s the pride of the White family. I’m just as upset as anyone, but what can I do?"
"Upset?" Chloe Sterling scoffed. "You could have fooled me."
The woman’s brow furrowed. "And who are you? This is none of your business!"
Asher White said, "She’s the doctor I asked to help my sister. My sister’s hand will get better."
"A doctor?" The woman sneered. "So young, and you’re already out here scamming people. You could be doing anything else. I suggest you leave right now, or I’m calling the police to report you for fraud!"
Chloe Sterling ignored her and turned to Claire White. "Miss White, the driver injured you while drunk. You absolutely deserve compensation, and that money belongs to you. You should be the one to manage it."
The woman’s expression turned even fouler. Before she could speak, Chloe Sterling added, "If you need a lawyer, I can recommend one."
Claire White understood her meaning and nodded. "I understand. I’ll handle this myself."
"What’s that supposed to mean?" the woman snarled, glaring at her.
Claire White said calmly, "I’m an adult. I can handle my own affairs."
The woman’s face was pale with rage. She ground out, "Handle it yourself? Look at the state you’re in! How are you supposed to do that?"
"You don’t need to worry about it."
’Of course I’ll demand compensation from the driver,’ Claire White thought. ’With that money, Asher and I can have a better life. We can finally leave the White family, leave our indifferent father and this two-faced stepmother. My injury won’t have been for nothing.’
The woman’s face was livid. "Fine. Handle it yourself, then." She spun around and left.
’Of course I’m not just going to let this go,’ she thought. ’But I can’t make too much of a scene with outsiders here. The settlement should be at least a million. There’s no way I’m letting that much money slip through my fingers.’
Claire White looked at Chloe Sterling and thanked her again. "Miss Sterling, thank you."
Chloe Sterling said, "Focus on your recovery for now. Keep all the medical reports the hospital gives you. Chase Langdon will help you get the largest possible settlement."
Chase Langdon glanced at Chloe, then said, "That’s right, Miss White. I’ll help you."
"I understand. Thank you both so much."
Asher White added, "Mr. Langdon, Miss Sterling, thank you."
Chase Langdon ruffled his hair. "Train hard from now on. If you do well, I’ll take you on as a formal disciple."
Asher White smiled. "Okay."
After saying their goodbyes again, Chloe Sterling and Chase Langdon left.
In the car, Chloe Sterling sat in the passenger seat, staring quietly out the window, lost in thought.
Chase Langdon suddenly spoke up. "Asher told me his sister had made it to the finals of a piano competition. I can’t believe she got into a car accident right before. Now she can’t go to the finals in two days."
Chloe Sterling snapped her gaze back from the window to look at him, a flicker of surprise in her eyes. "The finals are the day after tomorrow? You mean her accident happened right before the finals? What a coincidence. Which competition was it?"
"The national competition sponsored by the Sinclair Group." As he spoke, Chase Langdon’s eyes narrowed, a cold glint appearing in them. "To be honest, I’m a little suspicious myself. It seems far too convenient."
「The Sterling Estate.」
Esther Sterling’s face lit up with glee. "Aunt Ruby, is it true? Claire White really isn’t going to be at the finals?"
"Of course." Ruby Lynch’s lips curved into a smile. "How can someone compete when they’re lying in a hospital bed with a ruined hand?"
"In the hospital!" Esther Sterling froze, her eyes wide with shock. "How did she end up in the hospital?"
"A car accident. Her hand is ruined. She’ll never play the piano again."
Having practically destroyed a young girl’s future, Ruby Lynch’s tone was breezy and casual, as if she were discussing something utterly trivial.
Esther Sterling knew her aunt was ruthless, but she hadn’t expected her to go this far. She was a little shocked, but felt not a shred of guilt. With Claire White out of the picture, she no longer had any real competition.
