On the Day I Was Kicked Out of the Wealthy Family, I Had a Flash Marriage with a Tycoon-Chapter 55: Old and Calculating
Jean Kensington fiddled with her water glass and said coolly, "I doubt anyone would’ve guessed that the famous Pharmacist, Lynn Chester, is at The Medical College."
The two exchanged a smile, everything understood without a word.
It was a strange twist of fate that two people with similar destinies would meet, each with their own strengths, helping one another and becoming good friends.
Chloe Sterling looked at the baby sitting between them, his little fingers swiping across a tablet, and said earnestly, "I will definitely find a way to cure the baby."
"Mm," Jean Kensington nodded. "I trust you."
Hearing this, Chloe Sterling froze for a moment. Jasper Lockwood’s voice suddenly drifted through her mind, saying the same three words: ’I trust you.’
His eyes, his tone—both had been so resolute.
They had clearly only known each other for a short time, spent little time together, and weren’t even that familiar with one another, yet he seemed to trust her completely.
Noticing her strange expression, as if she were lost in thought, Jean Kensington waved a hand in front of her face. "What’s with that look? What are you thinking about?"
Chloe Sterling snapped back to reality. She hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Do you think... someone can come to like and trust a person so much in such a short time?"
Jean Kensington’s eyes darted slyly. She grinned. "You’re thinking about Jasper Lockwood, aren’t you?"
Chloe Sterling didn’t answer, which was a silent admission.
Jean Kensington rubbed her chin and murmured, "I think... probably not. Yours should be considered love at first sight, but love at first sight is all about looks. I believe true feelings develop over time. That kind of deeper affection definitely takes time."
"Love at first sight??"
"Isn’t it? Do you really think the great President of the Lockwood Group would marry someone after just one night together? Impossible, right? He must have been taken with you. And you—if he didn’t have that devastatingly handsome face, would you have agreed to a flash marriage with him?"
Chloe Sterling: "..."
’She really had agreed on some devilish impulse, mesmerized by his enchanting face.’
"Think about it. If the ’accident’ that night had been with Silas Coldwell instead... uh, no, that won’t work! Silas Coldwell is also devilishly handsome. What if it had been some other man? Would you still have agreed to marry him?"
’I wouldn’t!’
The two words sprang into Chloe Sterling’s mind the moment Jean Kensington mentioned Silas Coldwell’s name. She even thought that if it hadn’t been Jasper Lockwood that night, she might have woken up and silenced the man for good.
After that thought flashed through her mind, Chloe Sterling fell silent again.
Jean Kensington smiled smugly. "Think I’m right, don’t you?"
"Well, you have a point." After a pause, Chloe Sterling added, "Actually, he and I met two years ago. There’s another reason I agreed to marry him."
"What reason?"
"When I first arrived in Country E two years ago, he helped me. The situation was pretty critical at the time. If he hadn’t stepped in, something bad might have happened to me that night. I also agreed to marry him to repay him."
"Ah!" Jean Kensington looked astonished. "So you two had a ’hero saving the damsel in distress’ moment! Don’t you think he fell for you at first sight back then?"
"That’s impossible. It was just a brief encounter. I had something urgent to attend to and left in a hurry. We never crossed paths again after that."
"I see. But no matter how you look at it, you two have a deep connection. Otherwise, why wouldn’t you want to marry Silas Coldwell? He helped you in Country E, too."
Chloe Sterling’s mouth twitched. "...I saved his life first. We were just helping each other out."
"You’re just biased toward Jasper Lockwood," Jean Kensington said with a light laugh, hitting the nail on the head.
Chloe Sterling didn’t argue. It seemed to be true; deep down, she really was partial to Jasper Lockwood.
’It was as if only he would do; no one else was acceptable.’
"By the way, have you figured out how to throw those people looking for you off your trail?" Jean Kensington got down to business.
After a moment of thought, Chloe Sterling said, "Same as always. I’ll make an appearance somewhere else to mislead them."
"What about Country E?"
"Are there any families with a genuine patient trying to see me recently?"
"Let me think." Jean Kensington thought for a moment, then said, "You have two options. One is the Lancaster Family in Country E, and the other is a wealthy businessman in the south of the country, last name Yan."
"Send me their files. I’ll take a look and then decide."
"Okay, I’ll send them to you in a bit. You can look them over and think about it when you get home tonight."
"Mm."
Chloe Sterling had dinner with Jean Kensington and her son, returning to The Lockwood Residence a little after nine in the evening.
"Mrs. Lockwood."
"Mrs. Lockwood."
Seeing her return, the butler and servants all bowed their heads.
At first, Chloe Sterling wasn’t used to it, but after a little over two months, she seemed to have grown accustomed to the title. She paused, then asked, "Has Mr. Lockwood returned yet?"
The butler replied, "Mrs. Lockwood, Mr. Lockwood hasn’t returned yet. Would you like me to call and ask for you?"
"No need, I’ll ask him myself."
With that, Chloe Sterling went upstairs. She went to the study first to turn on her computer and review the files Jean Kensington had sent her. After some consideration, she decided to go to the Lancaster Family in Country E.
But she still needed to tell Jasper Lockwood about this.
She picked up her phone and dialed Jasper Lockwood’s number. The call connected quickly, and a man’s magnetic, pleasant voice came through. "Chloe."
"Jasper Lockwood, when are you coming back? I have something I want to talk to you about."
"In about an hour. Are you already home?"
"Yeah, I just got back a little while ago."
After a few seconds’ pause, Jasper Lockwood said, "Wait for me. I’m heading back right now."
"I’m not in a hurry. If you’re busy, finish what you’re doing. We can talk when you get back."
"Okay."
In a private room at a club.
Jasper Lockwood hung up the phone and immediately stood up. "You all carry on. I’m heading back. Just let me know when you have a result." 𝓯𝓻𝒆𝙚𝒘𝓮𝙗𝓷𝒐𝓿𝙚𝒍.𝙘𝓸𝙢
The others quickly rose to their feet, their attitudes respectful.
"Of course, President Lockwood. Take care..."
"President Lockwood, be careful on the road..."
After Jasper Lockwood left, the remaining people looked as if a great weight had been lifted from their shoulders. ’The tasks from the big boss are getting tougher and tougher.’
When Chloe Sterling came out of the bathroom, she saw Jasper Lockwood sitting on the sofa. She froze, surprised. "When did you get back?"
’How was he so fast!’
"Just got back." A strange glint flashed in the depths of Jasper Lockwood’s dark eyes, and his Adam’s apple bobbed slightly. He paused, then added, "Didn’t you say you had something to tell me? What is it?"
Noticing the strange look in his phoenix eyes, Chloe Sterling straightened the collar of her bathrobe. "I told you I wasn’t in a hurry. You really didn’t need to rush back."
Jasper Lockwood’s thin lips curved into a half-smile. "Can’t help it. I’m impatient."
Chloe Sterling: "..."
’He was anything but impatient. His personality was clearly far more mature and steady than other people his age. Some men in their late twenties still acted like immature, even childish, kids. But Jasper Lockwood’s methods and the way he handled things sometimes gave off the impression that he was a cunning old fox, despite being so young.’
Chloe Sterling suddenly let out a small laugh.
"What are you laughing at? Am I wrong?"
