One Night Stand With Alexander Blackwood-Chapter 49 — Forty-nine
The next day, Serena arrives at the office very early.
Alexander wasn’t in his office when she walked in, and she let out a sigh of relief. She didn’t know how she could face him after her actions from the previous night.
She took a deep breath as she settled in her seat. She looked around, reality finally dawning on her. She was really Alexander’s Executive Assistant.
Her eyes darted around. She really had nothing to do. His previous assistant had already taken care of it. She was basically jobless.
Suddenly, the telecom buzzed snapping Serena out of her thoughts.
She picked it up.
"Hello, Executive Assistant Serena speaking. How may I be of help to you?" She asked politely with a smile.
"Come downstairs." She heard a sharp order, and her brows furrowed.
"Alexander?" She called out tentatively while she wondered why he called her using the telecom.
"It’s me." He admitted, his voice lowering.
"Why did you use the telecom?" She probed, rising to her feet.
"I’ve been trying your number. It didn’t go through." Alexander explained.
Guilt washed over Serena as she bit her lips.
"I sort of kept it on DND and I forgot to remove it." Serena muttered quietly.
"Just come down." Alexander said and he disconnected the call.
Serena stared at the telecom, caught off guard by the sudden disconnection.
Regardless, she picked up her bag and exited the office. A few minutes later, she was outside the company.
Her eyes scanned the environment before it landed on Alexander’s car. She exhaled before she walked towards it.
She knocked on the window, and the car was opened. Without hesitation, she stepped into the back seat.
"Go." He ordered, and the driver drove off.
Confusion flashed through Serena’s eyes, and she asked. "Where are we headed?"
Alexander turned to stare at her knowingly. "You’ll see."
Serena studied at the knowing look in his eyes, and her heart raced. She was curious as well as expectant.
About thirty minutes later, the car pulled to a stop at the airport.
Serena blinked rapidly as she stammered. "A-airport?" Her gaze was fixated on Alexander, eager for an answer.
"I wasn’t joking when I said I had an important meeting yesterday." Alexander remarked, and exited the car.
Serena was still in a state of shock. She had no idea when the door was opened.
"Come on." Alexander’s voice snapped her out of her thoughts. He stretched his hand towards her. Still feeling clueless, she placed her hand in his, and stepped down from the car.
"Are we travelling for this meeting?" Serena asked, tilting her head to stare at him.
"Yes." He nodded in reply as he led her to the entrance of the airport. "As my assistant, you need to be here."
Serena stopped in her tracks, panic suddenly settling in her. "I don’t have my passport with me here. I am not prepared for this. Why didn’t you let me know about this?" She demanded, breathing heavily.
Alexander chuckled. He had to admit that he loved seeing her in this state.
Serena folded her arms as she glared at him. "Laughing at me, aren’t you?"
"You are so cute. I really want to pinch your cheeks." Alexander stated.
Serena’s eyes fluttered as disbelief filled her eyes.
"This is a serious matter." She managed to utter.
"Relax." Alexander remarked calmly and resumed in his steps. Serena had no other option than to follow him. "We are flying in my private plane."
Serena’s mouth formed an ’O’. "I had no idea." She muttered sheepishly.
Alexander laughed but she didn’t answer her.
"Where are we travelling to?" Serena questioned.
"Michigan." He answered curtly.
-----------------------
The flight to Michigan was fast. When the plane landed, Serena’s face was pale.
Alexander stared at her worriedly. "Are you okay?" He inquired.
Serena took a deep breath, before nodding. "I just forgot that I am not used to planes landing. It scares me." She explained as she placed the document on the table.
Alexander’s brows furrowed. "Why didn’t you inform me?" He demanded softly.
Serena shrugged. "I thought I had outgrown it. Clearly... it is something I have to battle with." There was a long sigh at the end of her words.
"Do you need to take a rest first before we leave the plane?" He suggested.
Serena was quick to reject his suggestion. "The meeting is more important." She rose to her feet — but her ankles twisted, and she fell straight into Alexander’s arms.
They held each other’s gazes, and spark seemed to fly among them as they stared straight into each other’s eyes.
Serena finally returned to her senses as she struggled to leave his embrace, but Alexander held her tightly in place.
She raised her head to meet his stare, and her heart picked up while she swallowed.
"It is nice to have you in my arms like this." Alexander lowered his head and whispered into her ears, his breath brushing against her.
Serena’s heart skipped a beat. Being close to Alexander spelt danger. When she found out that his arms around her were loose, she used the opportunity to leave his arms.
She straightened her dress and fixed her hair. "We are running late for the meeting and we might not make it if we keep dawdling." Her hands snatched the document on the table as she reverted to a neutral expression.
Alexander studied her, then chuckled. "Fine. Let’s leave."
Serena heaved a sigh of relief. Being in the same room with him definitely felt like she was walking on eggshells.
Alexander led the way off the plane, unaware of Serena’s thoughts. His stride was confident, as though nothing unusual had happened between them moments ago.
Serena followed closely, clutching the documents to her chest like a shield, her mind racing far faster than her feet.
A sleek black car was already waiting on the tarmac. The driver stepped forward, greeting Alexander respectfully before opening the door. Serena slipped inside, grateful for the brief distance the seat created between them.
As the car pulled onto the road, the silence which settled between them was heavy and charged.
She stared out the window, watching unfamiliar streets blur past. Michigan felt foreign, intimidating, and so did the way Alexander kept glancing at her as if she were something fragile.
The car slowed as a towering glass building came into view.
Alexander straightened. "We’re here. Are you ready?"
Serena inhaled deeply, nodding. This was her first major task. She needed it to be flawless.
