One Night Stand With Alexander Blackwood-Chapter 66 — Sixty-six
Serena couldn’t utter a word. She could only pull Maya into her arms while the latter broke down. Although she might not have known Mama for a long time, there was no doubt that she had grown attached to the older woman.
Alexander stood aside as he watched the two ladies console each other. He sighed repeatedly.
A few minutes later, Maya pulled away while wiping her eyes which were now swollen.
"It wasn’t an accident, was it?" She asked. Serena nodded.
"Who would be so cruel to kill an innocent woman?" Maya asked, tightening her hands into fists.
"We will find out soon enough." Alexander stepped in. His eyes darted between both women before he continued. "You don’t have to worry about the funeral plans. I will handle it."
"Mama would have wanted a silent one. Is it possible?" Serena requested.
Meanwhile, Maya’s gaze drifted between both of them. She sensed something had changed but she couldn’t place her finger on what had.
Before Alexander could respond, the sound of a phone ringing cut across the room.
"I’m sorry. I have to take this." He said, and walked away..
After Alexander walked out, Maya whispered into Serena’s ears. "Tell me, what’s between you both?"
Serena swallowed as a red patch covered her cheeks.
"Don’t tell me it’s what I think it is." Maya squealed. Serena only nodded while Maya hugged her, surprising her.
"This is good news. Mama would have been ecstatic if she heard about this." Maya blurted, and the atmosphere changed. The excitement died down as both women’s expressions changed into gloom.
Meanwhile, Alexander walked into the kitchen and picked the call.
"Boss," the person on the other line greeted respectfully.
"Did you get what I asked you for?" Alexander asked, tapping his fingers on the kitchen counter.
"Of course." A pride voice sounded. "It wasn’t that hard. I have also sent it to your email. You’d be surprised once you find out who the mastermind is."
Alexander’s expression turned colder, but he didn’t answer.
"Boss, don’t forget our deal. I need Kevin Thorne’s crimes to be made known. I want everyone to know that the respectable officer they’ve all come to love is nothing but a liar." The man’s voice was filled with undisguised anger.
"You have my word." Alexander gave his word, and disconnected the call.
Afterwards, he went through the file which was sent to him. His eyes scanned it, and his expression turned dark.
"Amelia? But why would she do this?" He muttered under his breath.
His gaze drifted to the living room where both women were seated with gloomy expressions, and his brows furrowed.
He closed his phone and walked out.
"Let’s go." He said. Serena was quick to rise to her feet while Maya remained confused.
"Wait. Where are we headed?" She asked curiously.
Serena smiled softly. "To see Mama for the last time."
"I want to go as well."
---------------------
Two days later.
Serena was seated in the living room, going through a magazine. Her eyes were swollen, having cried for a long time the previous day.
Alexander walked out of the kitchen.
"Here, a glass of juice for you." He handed it to her.
Serena smiled softly at him. "Thank you." She said sincerely and took a sip.
Setting the glass on the table, she added. "I also have to say thank you for yesterday as well. You handled her funeral, and it happened without any hitch. I’m grateful."
Alexander took a seat beside her, and pulled her into his embrace. "You don’t have to thank me profusely. I already told you that you have me now." He gave her a kiss on her forehead, and Serena nodded.
Serena inhaled his cologne, but her throat tightened suddenly. Mama used to say she liked that scent. She would always say it smelled ’safe.’ Her fingers clenched against Alexander’s shirt before she could stop herself.
Alexander noticed her actions, and he let her do what she wanted. If this was the only way she could showcase her grief, then she should do it. She was strong—too strong, and it could affect her mentally.
"What about the investigation? No updates about it?" Serena suddenly asked.
Alexander shook his head and answered. "They are still tracing the DNA of the hair." He paused, before adding. "You don’t have to worry. I have my men supervising it. They’d dare not play any tricks."
Serena nodded, feeling relieved. "Since you are in charge, I’d leave it to you."
The atmosphere turned silent. It wasn’t an awkward silence, but a comfortable one which was enough for the couple.
Suddenly, the sound of the doorbell ringing sounded across the woman. They both exchanged glances.
"Are you expecting someone?" Serena asked, staring at him. Alexander shook his head.
"I’ll go check it." Alexander said. But Serena stopped him. "Allow me."
She offered him a small smile before leaving his embrace. Alexander’s eyes softened as his gaze followed her every move.
Serena, on the other hand, opened the door. Before she could utter a word, she was pushed aside as two familiar women walked in.
"As a maid, why..." Grace trailed off when she saw who it was. Her expression changed as she demanded. "What are you doing in my son’s house?"
Rhea’s expression changed. What was this b*tch doing here? She thought to herself. But she consoled herself. Grace was here. She didn’t need to do much.
Thinking about it, her lips curved up but she lowered her head to hide her smug expression.
"Rena, who’s at the door?" Alexander’s voice sounded from the living room..
Grace glared at her before walking off, followed by Rhea who eyed her.
Serena rubbed the space between her forehead. Couldn’t she get a moment of peace?
She remained standing by the door, her hands trembling slightly as Grace and Rhea walked past her like she was invisible.
She swallowed hard before remembering what Mama would always say.
"Serena, don’t let people walk all over you. You’re bigger than that, and you should always have your head held high."
She took a deep breath before she walked into the living room, while her fingers trembled slightly.
When she arrived, Grace and Rhea were already seated. Alexander, on the other hand, didn’t pay any attention to them. Instead, he focused on his phone.
It was only when he sensed Serena’s entry did he put his phone away. His lips curved upwards as he gestured for her to take a seat beside him.
Serena didn’t stand on ceremony. She directly walked past the two women, and sat beside Alexander who didn’t hesitate to pull her into his embrace.
Rhea’s eyes burned as she watched the interaction between them. Grace didn’t have it good as well. She felt uncomfortable within.
She took a deep breath before speaking up. "Alexander, I’m still your mother. You should learn to show me respect."
Alexander merely cast a glance, nodding to show he acknowledged her presence... or not.
Grace felt a spark in her head. She turned to Rhea who gave her a ’I told you so’ look.
"Are you seriously disrespecting your mother because of this girl?" Her fingers trembled as she pointed at Serena who frowned unconsciously..
Alexander’s expression hardened, the room turning colder. Grace swallowed, feeling the tension within her bones.
’Have I really lost control over him?’ She thought to herself as she met Alexander’s gaze. She instantly dropped her gaze. Alexander’s look seemed as though he was about to kill.
What Grace didn’t know was that she was wrong. She was never in control of Alexander... much to her dismay.
