One Night Stand With Alexander Blackwood-Chapter 94 — Ninety-four
Alexander stepped in, his expression calm and dangerous. "You are not dying. You lied... again."
Serena didn’t say anything. Instead, she took a seat on the sofa, not sparing the mother-daughter duo a glance.
Evelyn stared at Serena, and her eyes narrowed.
"This girl..." she trailed off, murmuring under her breath without anyone hearing. "She looks so much like her."
Rhea was ignorant of her mother’s words as her gaze remained fixated on Alexander.
"I can explain." She exited the bed, almost stumbling.
"Don’t come close to me." He stretched his hand forward, causing her to stop in her tracks. "What do you have to say? I must say, you are really a good actress. Lying about dying? That’s low, even for someone like you."
Alexander didn’t care about how she’d feel as he berated her sharply.
"I had no other choice!" Rhea snapped, stomping her feet on the floor. "You wouldn’t pick my calls, and I couldn’t get through to you. You forced me to do—"
"Was that why you enlisted your mom’s help in lying to me?" He cut her off, crossing his arms across his chest.
Evelyn lowered her head after being stared at by Alexander.
"Why is she here?" Rhea didn’t answer his question (he was right, there was nothing she could do about it). Instead, she tried to change the topic, shifting her attention to Serena who had been sitting quietly.
Alexander rolled his eyes. He could tell what she was about to do, and he scoffed internally.
"She’s my girlfriend, and I chose to bring her along. There is nothing you can do about it."
Rhea stumbled just by gearing his first statement. She knew they were in a relationship, but hearing him admit it shook her to the core.
She didn’t even know when she snapped as she pointed to innocent Serena. "You can have everyone else. But why her?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮
Alexander rolled his eyes subtly. "You don’t get to decide who I stay with. It’s none of your business."
"Serena, let’s go." Alexander turned to Serena, and gestured to her. "We are not needed here."
Serena rose to her feet, and walked to Alexander’s side. They were about to leave when Rhea called out.
"Alexander!"
He and Serena paused without looking back.
"Are you really willing to go this far? Just for her?" She asked, her lips trembling.
"I’ve told you this before." He stated, not turning his face to her. "I only have one person I like, and that is Serena. I will do anything for her."
Rhea stumbled, almost falling, but her mom was quick to catch her.
"Don’t play such stunts again. It’d be better if you turn yourself in. Your sentence could be less than it should be." He paused, then sighed. "As for your father’s company..."
Evelyn’s ears perked up.
"Uncle and Aunt are nice people and shouldn’t suffer for your mistakes. The company would be safe as long as you confess your crimes."
"We are even now." Without waiting for her reply, he interlocked his fingers with Serena’s, and they walked out of the ward.
Rhea collapsed to the bed as Evelyn’s grip had loosened.
"You heard what he said. You should turn yourself in." Evelyn urged her.
"Mom!" Rhea stared at her, her eyes in disbelief. "I’m your daughter for Christ’s sake. Do you want me to go to jail?" She asked quietly, her eyes reflecting her shock.
"You need to be accountable for your actions." Evelyn replied without batting an eyelid. "You did something wrong, and this is the consequence. You are doing it for your father’s company."
Rhea was taken aback. "Do you care about the company more than your daughter?" She demanded, laughing not out of mirth, but incredulity.
Evelyn shook her head. "You are my daughter. But you were wrong. Didn’t you hear what he said? Your sentence would be less if you turn in yourself."
Rhea was silent, unable to speak a word. She could see her mother’s stance. She wanted to throw her under the bus for the sake of the company.
She chuckled silently. Maybe... just maybe, this was the punishment she deserved. Punishment for leaving him.
--------------
Alexander’s grip on Serena was tight as they walked out of the hospital.
"Are you okay?" She asked quietly, causing Alexander to stop in his tracks.
He nodded, a soft look in his eyes. "I’m fine. Why do you ask?"
"I might not have known you for a long time, but I can see it in your eyes that you are in a bad mood." She paused for a while, a thoughtful expression on her face. "Tell me, what’s bothering you? Is it Rhea?" She asked carefully.
Alexander chuckled softly, and pulled her into his arms. "You are attentive."
"I try my best." Serena replied, her eyes brightening, while the corner of her eyes crinkled with delight. "Besides, it’s not that hard to see."
"I can’t help it." Alexander confessed. "Perhaps, a part of me wished she hadn’t lied. But that would indirectly mean she is truly dying."
Serena listened quietly as he spoke.
"I spent three years with her. So, it’s baffling that her current behaviour surprises me." He continued. "Maybe, I didn’t really know her. Honestly, a part of me is glad that she left me. At least, it gave me the opportunity to meet with you."
Serena blushed with the tip of her ears turning red. "You flatter me."
"I’m saying the truth." Alexander stated. "Some people leave our lives so as to make way for the right people to come in."
Serena nodded, agreeing with his words. "Do you think she would turn herself in?" She then asked the major question.
"I have a feeling she would. And if she doesn’t, her mother would do everything to make sure she does." Alexander replied as he opened the car for her.
Confusion flickered in Serena’s eyes as she waited for him to climb into the car.
Once he was in the driver’s seat, she asked, doubt evident in her voice. "Why do you think her mom would do so?"
Alexander replied knowingly. "Because her mom cares more about the company than her daughter."
Serena was taken aback.
"You don’t need to worry about it. You only need to know that justice would be served one day or the other."
Serena was silent as she fell into deep thoughts. Could a mother be that vicious? She didn’t have the answer.
